Canzano, Pig-2 Chortling Over 16 Million (So Far) NCAA BBall Theft...
TRAITOR! WSU CBB coach Kyle Smith has accepted the job at Stanford. Smith is well qualified having coached in the Ivy League for several successful seasons with Columbia. Smith has a rebuild on his hands. At UW new coach from Utah State, Danny Sprinkle, will mine the transfer portal. Exactly like he did at Utah State before taking the Aggies to the Tournament and a first-round win. Smith will not be able to mine the portal at Stanford. So WSU now joins OSU in losing a successful Money Ball coach. At least J. Smith went B1G. Smith left Pullman to take a job in the rugged ACC with the transfer portal and NIL arms tied behind his back. I am certain that he will have more than a few Cougars fan epitaphs sprinkled in his direction. Unlike Canzano and Wilner, quality coaches know that the Pac-2 are G5 programs playing out the string so they can score Pac-10 money. It's good to be B1G.

April 15th. Along With the IRS the Poachers Are Coming.
College football's 2nd portal window opens on April 15th and closes on April 30th. Expect more roster chaos. Tackle Kaydn Proctor will not be the only player to leave and test the marketplace for his NIL value then return to his former team. And post-spring ball you can bet that poachers will be telling players via a player's agent or otherwise that you may not be good enough to start for Team A but come to Team B, start, and get paid. Court decisions in West Virginia and Tennessee have neutered the NCAA when it comes to NIL enforcement of any kind. The NCAA has conceded to not having any control over NIL including control over players who have previously transferred. Having to re-recruit a roster in December and April is coach-crazy-making. Hopefully, Oregon will not suffer any two-time transfers. None of the 11 players who are transferring in will decide to bounce to another team after spring practice. I do not want to put a jinx on Puddles but Dante Moore is from Detroit and Michigan sorely needs a top-drawer QB to replace JJ McCarthy. Somehow this game of musical NIL-money chairs has to stop. But there is no apparent help on the horizon from Congress or otherwise. The Spring transfer portal window will be the most chaotic yet BAMAHAMMER.COM In the new NIL and transfer portal window of College Football, we've slowly seen a wild shift in what was ever imaginable in the sport. Oregon Ducks Football: Game of the Year?
Hayward, good call on the Purdue game which is the game immediately after playing Ohio State in Autzen. The Ducks will be coming off an incredible high or at least a bit of a buzz kill if the game goes the other way and it's a long trip to Purdue. The Boilermakers have pulled off some B1G time home upsets in the past. Purdue will be the 4th game in Oregon's eight-game stretch without a break.

Oregon Ducks Football: Game of the Year?
Thank you, Alex. The move to the B1G is certainly the most timely move Oregon has made in the history of its athletic programs, and the long-term best move, given the alternatives, without a doubt. In 2032 every B1G program, including Oregon which will be a full and not a junior partner, will be bringing in $100 Million per annum. Remain in the Pac-10? There is no way Oregon in 2032 would be pulling down half of what it will receive as a B1G member. In the B1G Oregon will not have its light hidden under a PR bushel. The Big Ten Network will be covering Oregon sports in full including NFL-like pre-game and post-game coverage; coverage that will be viewed by B1G fans coast to coast. This exposure will do nothing but help with recruiting. Stay with the Pac-10 and Oregon would not have been able to recruit at championship levels. It has to be one of Ohio State or Michigan. Good arguments for the game in Ann Arbor but considering Oregon is 1-9 vs. The Buckeyes and that Oregon has played and won, in the Big House, and Columbus, I'll go with 10/12/24 in Eugene against a loaded Ohio State team that will start the season ranked first or second in the country. Michigan is returning a few studs on D but has close to a complete rebuild on offense. Thanks for the terrific article and Vandalize the Vandals!

Rob Mullens: Is it Sloth or Apathy?
If the Pac-12 (2) is not in existence two years from the official expiry date, the remaining tourney payouts would go to the schools that earned the money. Whether this issue was addressed or not I do not know.
-
Rob Mullens: Is it Sloth or Apathy?
No way did you insult me, my friend. I think your position is completely understandable. I'm mindful of the Serenity Prayer: Give me the wisdom to accept things I cannot change. In light of how the Pac-12 break-up went down, it's entirely reasonable to not be subsumed by anything out of your control. I'm a frustrated old attorney who cannot help but wonder if the leaders of the Pac-10 gave any consideration at all to alternative courses of action. The House and other anti-trust decisions will be decided within a year or two. House could bring in a $4 Billion judgment against the NCAA and its member schools. Athletic departments might need all of the money available in any manner to pay their share if the NCAA does not file bankruptcy and deal with the judgment as part of a liquidation plan. $30 Million and counting is a lot to walk away from. Thanks for the follow-up comment.

Pac-12 Settlement Announced
It does not make me happy but Fox, after being jocked by ESPN and SEC poaching Oklahoma and Texas, played the entire realignment game perfectly. Grab the LA schools and wait for the Pac-10 to come up with a crummy new media deal, in part because Fox would not step up at all, then grab Oregon and UW at a discount through 2031. Apple tried to buy the Pac-10 inventory on the cheap and make the Pac-10 take all of the beta site streaming risk. Oregon was supposed to take this deal to help out Oregon State? How about the Commissioner? Being paid $3 Million a year because of his media expertise and he needs a consultant to help negotiate the new media deal. And the consultant he hired was a bosom buddy from law school. Has there ever been a business entity with a 'board of directors' as clueless as the bozos who allowed the Pac-12 to crater? Time after time after time that made the wrong business decision. One was not expanding into the midwest and killing off the B12. After making this pathetic decision, the fools had the hutzpah to call the Pac-12 'an exclusive club.' No one escapes this kind of hubris. Thanks for the post, HDuck, but as you so noted, this is the same capitulation that the Pac-10 agreed to earlier. Not surprising that the Pac-2's enabler-in-chief, John Canzano, would post this. How stupid is this settlement? The Pac-departees could have instead filed for liquidation in federal bankruptcy court. I practiced for decades in BK courts. I very much doubt that a BK court would deny those responsible for over 80 percent of the entity's liabilities standing; the right to file the matter. Upon filing, the automatic stay would have prevented the Pac-2 from receiving any distributions before a one-hundred-and-twenty-day period, which is routinely extended, for the Pac-10 and its creditors to file a Plan of Liquidation. OSU and WSU would be viewed by the court as 'Insiders' and as such, would have had to surrender any preference payments received within the prior six months to the bankruptcy trustee. The decision by a state court in Washington as sustained on appeal, would also be stayed pending resolution of the bankruptcy filing. The Pac-10 would have had time to negotiate a reasonable settlement with the Pac-2. The Pac-2 suffered no injury at the hands of the Pac-10. The pledge of media rights was up and no exit fee was owed anyone. The Pac-10 owed no fiduciary duty whatsoever to the Pac-2. To file and litigate in BK court would not come close to costing $30 Million for each Pac-10 member. Parties that did no wrong should not be treated as if they somehow ripped off the two entities that were not worthy of receiving a realignment deal other than whatever was offered by the AAC and the MW. For any and every athletic department in the country, $30 to $35 Million is not an insignificant amount of money. The path of least resistance taken by the Pac 10/8 sickens me. As does blaming the Pac-10/8 for OSU's and WSU's business failures.

2024 NCAA Basketball Tournament Laugh Out Loud!
Indiana State was in the top 30 NET rankings and did not make the tournament field. The Big East advanced all 3 teams including Creighton (sigh) to the Sweet 16. Saint John's, Providence, and Seton Hall were all deserving of a bid. The SEC and B12 received 8 bids each. Both have 2 teams playing in the Sweet 16, 25% of the invitees. The B1G has 33.33%, 2 of 6 in the Sweet 16. The ACC may be leaking oil but Tobacco Road owns 25% of the Sweet 16 with 4 teams still alive. The Pac-12 put 1 out of 4 teams in the field but came oh so close to having 3 in with CU and Oregon (sigh) losing in OT. In the Committee's favor, all 4 of the 1 seeds and all 2 of the 2 seeds made it to the Sweet 16.

2024 NCAA Basketball Tournament Laugh Out Loud!
As reported by Jon Wilner. After Yale upset Auburn in the first round of Tournament play, the Yale site, '@YaleMBB' was bombarded by congratulatory messages. An hour or so after the victory the site sent out the following message: "@YaleMBB is Yale's Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry account. Tag @YaleMBasketball instead." It's only a movie.

Rob Mullens: Is it Sloth or Apathy?
Grateful, hats off for moving on. However, this is a gift that will continue to keep on giving over the course of the NCAA Tournament payout. What happens to the Pac-2/12 after the NCAA two-year grace period to rebuild a conference to at least eight teams? If there is no longer a Pac-12, should the Pac-2 continue to receive 100% of the basketball tourney payout? The Pac-2 is using the 10 teams leaving as the result of the Pac-12 business failing money, to among other things buy game inventory from the MW. The MW charged the two a significant amount for games to be played in 2024 and 2025. Here's the hook Grateful, the MW only agreed to this under the condition that it would cost the Pac-2 $10 Million, in addition to the exit fee the departing MW team would have to pay, for every departing MW team that in the future affiliates with the Pac-2 under the Pac-12 trademark or otherwise. Is this the act of two teams intending to rebuild a conference or two teams looking for a lifeline as they rip off their former partners; partners who delivered 90% of the money? A lifeline that for two years means not having to share with new conference members. And it's Oregon that is 'greedy,' right? I would appreciate it if you would provide your reasons for being happy that a home game vs a P4 team was called off to play a game on the road vs. a G5 team. I certainly respect your opinion, but I'm not certain of the 'why' for any other reason perhaps than 'Tradition.' The game being played in Corvallis is an economic hit to Lane County, an entity the UO has to regularly do business with. Were representatives of the County and the cities of Eugene/Springfield consulted before this decision was made? It's only a short trip up the road, but in a season when you are playing eight games in a row without a break why add another away game? Thanks for the comment. I am certain that other friends of Puddles are fine with all of 'this' just going away. In my case, I wouldn't ask a thief who breaks into my house to stay for dinner. All the best and Go Ducks!

From Oregon: Gonzaga’s Ben Gregg is Fun To Watch
It's POY Eddy and the Boilermakers vs the Zags in the Sweet 16. Boilermakers 106. Utah State 67. 2 B1G teams in the Sweet 16 with Northwestern, in theory, having a chance to beat Bama and move on to the Sweet 16.

Too Funny: SEC Meltdown as Buffs/Yale Beat Florida/Auburn!
Tennessee made it to the Sweet 16 over future conference member Texas. Bama and A+M also have a shot, especially Bama against Grand Canyon, of making the Sweet 16. Two teams from a conference in the Sweet 16 is nice. The SEC gets 3 teams to the Sweet 16 and no one will remember the early flame outs. Marquette and Creighton (sigh) are in the Sweet 16 and UConn is close to a lock to follow. If UConn defeats Northwestern, the Big East will be 3 for 3 in placing conference teams into the Sweet 16. 3 tourney seeds for the B1G East and 8 for the B12 and the SEC is just silly. It's not the fault of the B12 and the SEC, it's the fault of the CBB Committee.
