Quite a few seasons back Utah defeated Alabama 31-17 in the Sugar Bowl on 1/2/09. Utah was in the Mountain West. The Utes joined the Pac-12 in 2010. think this is the only big-time bowl win for the Utes. Last 2 Rose Bowls, 2021, Utah had a running back playing as a DB, and Ohio State won a Rose Bowl shootout. In 2022, Utah was simply smash-mouthed by Penn State in the Rose Bowl in a very bad showing by Utah that drew the fewest number of Rose Bowl viewers in decades. Utah got a nice break last season playing CU before the champ game while SC played Notre Dame. But not the break SC potentially has this season with an Open Date the week prior to the champ game. My 2023 Pac-12 nightmare has USC playing UCLA in the champ game.

Oregon - 2.21M, Utah - 1.16M, 34. UW - 1.15M. WA St is close at 41. and 907K. 55. Cincinnati - 653K - Cincinnati is approximately the same market size as Columbus. Ohio State is #1 with an average of 5.8M viewers. 61. UCF - 510K - Not that far behind 59. Miami - 608K and the Orlando market is now larger than the Miami market. With the B12 membership, I expect UCF to close the gap with Miami. 78. Houston - 242K. Houston, like SMU in Dallas, does not punch its weight in the Houston media market. Great take, Annie. Streaming will be in the mix but I hope it is with Amazon, Apple, or UTube (now in the football game with Sunday NFL telecasts) and not Peacock with its crummy 20M subscriber base. Peacock would not be a significant improvement over Larry's Loser Network. And with NBC's Notre Dame and B1G media deals, you can bet that Pac-10 games on Peacock would be late, late Eastern time kick-offs. The LA schools were not clued into Peacock being the exclusive broadcaster for 8 B1G games this season. One home game in LA for both LA schools is expected to be streamed on Peacock. The UW at Michigan State game will be shown exclusively on Peacock, (thanks for burying the P10 exposure) and Peacock had the contractual power to move a Sparty home game from E. Lansing to Detroit. Ohio State did come through when it snuck in as the 4 seed in the playoff's first season. But that Urban Meyer team was stacked with future pros and like all other teams that won the playoff, OH ST played 8 conference games and not the 9 the B1G plays today. If you want to see playoff titles look to the southeastern part of the country with its plethora of top-drawer recruits and huge administrative and fan support. The Clemson president and SEC presidents get that winning big-time trophies raises all conference boats. The B1G has had 7 shots at the playoff title and has 1 title. The B12 has had 5 shots and no titles. The Pac-12 has had 2 shots and no tiles. Notre Dame is 0-2 and the ACC is Clemson. It Just Means More rankles but in this case, the truth hurts. What Dan Lanning is doing on the recruiting trail in light of this and all of the flack being thrown at the Pacific conference is simply amazing. This also shows the power of the Oregon brand. The Ducks need to do all it can when it comes to getting Puddles in front of a national audience and I hope Oregon will do all it can to retain the services of a young, enthusiastic top-drawer recruiter.

If Dan has done the portal plugging we are all excited about on D, the D should and hopefully will step up from underperforming in 2022. But so much of these rankings depend upon the quality of the opposition you face on O and D. The Oregon D will be facing prolific O's in the conference and at Texas Tech. Going against the defending Heisman Trophy winner as well as UW's Penix and Utah's Rising among others. I see no other conference in CFB in 2023 that will be better on offense top to bottom than the Pac-12. With a balanced attack and an upgrade at WR, the O should pick up right where it started. I expect the OL will come through and someone will step up at TE. Bucky Irving made tremendous progress as a receiver last season and I expect this will continue in 2023. Lots of weapons for Will Stein and Bo to play with.

The Ducks play all 4 Pac-12 'favorites' in 2023 with 2 of the games on the road and play at TX Tech, a team predicted to finish 4th in the B12. Washington State plays Wisconsin OOC and also, of course, plays 9 conference games. If a Pac-12 team deserves to be on this list it's UCLA. I agree Charles, for PFF this is off-the-wall. Frankly, unexpected bias. This just in. Games versus Missouri, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, last seen dropping its 5th game in a row in a bowl beat down authored by Texas Tech, are not opponents like no other in college football. And A+M didn't make a bowl game last season. And in the B1G, what teams other than Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State offer superior competition? SMH. 😵

And UCLA, if Dante Moore is the real deal, and with the benefit of missing Oregon and UW and playing Cal and Stanford could also be in the mix along with Oregon, SC, Utah, UW, and Oregon State.

Thank you, Joshua. Always great to read your takes. I am not as sanguine as you Joshua and others on the board when it comes to playing Texas Tech in Lubbock. Assuming TT doesn't have a look-ahead problem in the opening game at Wyoming, TT, and its fans will be off the charts pumped up for this game against the Ducks. It will be loud and it also will likely be very hot in Buddy Holly country. Tyler Shough in his 6th season of CFB will be pumped (Hopefully, too pumped) to pay back Oregon for the hand Mario, I never met a QB I liked, Cristobal handed him. The vote was 9-3 against taking TT and other B12 orphans into The Elite Club. I have no idea as to how Oregon voted in this matter. But I do know it is one thing to reject an applicant for anything with civility and no need to rub an applicant's face in the Elite Club nonsense. The fans of TT will not forget this slight. Will this matter on the field of play? Probably not but an already incented group of football-mad Texas fans would have already been pumped to beat any Pac-12 team without this added incentive. 2023, D3 is staying with the clock stopping after 1st downs. I am somewhat confused as to whether the clock running after 1st downs will be implemented in 2023 for all divisions above D3. (Help, please.) TT ran the most plays from scrimmage in P5/G5 football last season. Hopefully, the rule will be in place to help slow the TT O down. As noted above it will be hot in Lubbock and this could test the depth of players on defense in particular. Best case, Oregon in 2023 goes 12-1 and makes the final Final 4 as it made the first Final 4. Mario's, in fairness, and Dan Lanning's recruiting pays off and equally important DL as a number of us believe, did a masterful job of plugging holes with players out of the portal on O and particularly, on D. Will Stein seamlessly steps in for Dilly. The talent is there and the players better understand DL's D in 2023. As Charles has artfully noted, you need a freak at every level to play the "Georgia defense." The Ducks run game and passing attack allows Oregon to have the best-balanced O in the conference. USC cannot simply shoot out its way to a conference title. SC has on paper also improved on D with players taken from the portal but these guys have to be integrated and coached up. A big if with Grinch still on board. Worst case. Oregon goes 9-3. As Joshua notes the conference is ridiculously deep in 2023. And as Forum readers are aware no team since CU and Utah came on board has gone 9-0 in conference play. There will be a number of games in 2023 where the bottom half of the conference pulls off upsets. But I expect Oregon will go 10-2/ 8-1 in the conference and this will be good enough to get to Las Vegas and rematch with USC. SC has a nice leg up playing Utah, UW, and UCLA at home and missing an Oregon State team it was fortunate to defeat by 3 points last season in Corvallis. 50 days or so before the games kick off and we can focus on football and not a bunch of off-season junk.
