  1. I heard this comment too, and at the time I thought, "so that's the problem ".

I don't know how their system is supposed to work, but the results are uninspiring.

Ultimately, I think MC and Co. are better coaches than we think. There is so much behind the scenes we just don't know, and injuries have been a serious problem. But I'm wondering about the RB coach, Mastro. He seems to have a big say in who plays and when, and we certainly have questioned some of those decisions.

Maybe there are too many cooks in the kitchen!

Except for one game, our offense has been boring, predictable, and only moderately successful. The qb play seems to have regressed each game, not improve.

If you wait for the wheels to fall off before you act, you are not a leader. Good leaders anticipate and have a vision for the future.

  2. It's kinda funny, Stanford has put more big game losses on Oregon than any other team, but I've never hated them.

I hated Harbaugh (still do), I don't particularly like Shaws smug looks, but never hated them. I think their name and mascot and band are all lame...

UW is really the only team I hate.

    Maybe Boise St. too.

I think he has matured? I don't believe a team he coached has ever gone on probation? His players have not gotten in a whole lot of trouble.

After attending the Nick Saban Former HC Rehab Program, Kiffin did a terrific job at FAU and is doing a good job at Ole Miss. Blown out by Bama last Saturday but what team isn't blown out by Bama in Tuscaloosa?

He did stiff arm Tennessee. But SC was the guy's dream college job and it was offered. What Haden did to Kiffin on the tarmac is as scummy as anything Lane has ever done. Haden of course is in the running for worst AD ever.

I certainly do understand your concerns regarding Kiffin. He is not a buttoned down guy. But Saban frequently goes after the press, mostly as a motivational tool. Oregon grad and USC coach John McKay was not a shrinking violet. Etc, etc., etc.

Since serving under Saban and updating the Bama O, he has a winning record both at the G5 and P5 level.

Again, I am not trying to 'win' an argument here. Many CFB fans share your concerns regarding Kiffin.

As a practical matter, I don't see Mario departing. Kiffin is in a conference with no financial worries. And I think he will get a call when coach O is fired and maybe, when Saban finally decides to hand it up?

You are right in your assessment of Kiffin. But it would be soooo hard to be a Duck if he were hired. But I would prefer him to Harbaugh!! lol

Take a deep breath everyone. The sky is not falling, although there are valid reasons to be concerned.

At the beginning of the season I thought they needed two things for this team to be a true top ten team.

First, great QB play, especially in running Joe's RPO offense. That means consistently making great reads.

Secondly, staying healthy. This is pretty much a golden rule throughout all of sports.

On the first point, prior to the Stanford game, while I had my concerns about AB, I felt there was not the body of evidence to make a fair assessment. There is now.

I love the comment "What is the best way to coach up talent? Reps in real games and lots of them." I also agree that developing consistency is important. But tough to do when injuries occur.

I tend to agree with Hayward Duck's conclusion. Not that I don't have ongoing concerns about player development, I do. But with less injuries, and a Joe Moorhead offense led by a top tier QB I think the narrative at this point would be far different.

Several questions I will leave you with: If Shough would have stayed, would he be starting at this point? Although his decision making also suspect, could he have overcome that? Am I off-base in my belief that Shough had a stronger arm than Brown? The difference between completing 55% and a 65% of your passes is fairly dramatic.

I don't think the question is arm strength. AB clearly can compete with Herbert on strength alone. His problem is accuracy, probably a result of poor mechanics his whole career.

  5. I was pondering the same question.

Going back to Herbert's final year, we have not only not coached the qb to his best potential, but it appears just the opposite, our qb play is regressing, as the season progresses.

I'm aware that we have different head OC over those years, but Mastro, Mirabal and Cristobal are the same, and run results are stagnant.

Maybe the reason a blue-chip, bell-cow, every down back hasn't picked Oregon in awhile is more clear to the players than to us fans.

It sure seems something is wrong in the kitchen with the cooks more than with the ingredients.

When do you move a player down?   ANSWER: When you are sure he isn't going to get better.

Brown has had 5 games and this was his worst.

Other players on the team have gotten better.  Some, I just don't think will be that great, but they still provide depth.

The offense can change with a new QB.  The defense needs bigger changes.  Stanford drove 90 yds in 2 minutes.  All due to the wrong scheme.

Helfrich did himself in when he hired Brady Hoke and stuck with him.  Why did they allow a first down on that 2nd and 15 or 20?  Just tackle them in bounds short of the chains and burn out the clock.

Will Cristobal stick with Brown?   Will Cristobal stick with the defensive scheme that doesn't cover receivers?

    ------------------------------------------------

When Oregon used to lose 'big games' like  LSU and Ohio St before this year, they did it largely because their linemen couldn't compete.  But against Stanford, the Ducks had better linemen.  Oregon was taking over the game in the second half.

Stanford won with a better QB and better offensive and defensive schemes.   Watching your favorite team underperform is hard.  All we want as fans is for this team to play up to their potential.  Then if they lose to Alabama or Georgia in the playoffs, we will say it was a good year just to get there.

But this loss feels like the losses to Boise St.  We know we should be winning games like this.

Just like my criticism with Brown, who isn't improving, Cristobal also isn't improving the schemes.  Many players are improving, which is very good.

Dye and Verdell fought hard to break tackles and get extra yards - something missing from their game for a long time.

There are still 7 games left plus another one or two, depending on how things go.  I want to see the schemes improve this year.  The defense took a downturn this year and the offense has been not good since Cristobal took over.

This is a rebuilding year.  Not rebuilding the players, but rebuilding the identity of Oregon football and what the game plan is.  I just want to start seeing plays and schemes that make sense for modern college football.

But for that last drive with 30 yds coming from 3 questionable calls...

the defense played great in 2nd half.

And Stanford only won because we allowed them to. They, and their qb are middle of the Pac. We are better at every position, we need to show it and play it!

Time to spark it up, start TT. With CJ out, we need a good down field passing attack.

  7. It would seem the offense is in need of some type of major shake up. It seems clear that Verdell is out for significant time, and Brown simply isn't getting it done. Starting a new QB could be just the kick our young team needs. And a bye week before a home game is just the place to do it!

Watching that game Saturday, I wondered why we even put receivers in the game?! AB never threw downfield to one!

And what's with the TE's not looking for a pass?! Twice!

I've been a a staunch supporter of AB but now is the time to change if ever there was a best time.

And it's time to see some serious game planning by the OC. If I can read the play, then it's really bad.

Change is needed now. We have become boring to watch.

Thanks Charles! I sent you an email. Not sure how I will be able to avoid seeing or hearing about a score though, but I will try. Dang in-laws! Always ruining my fun 😤

I love mountain biking though, so I shouldn't complain too much.

    Priorities, my young patowon.

    (And get a dvr!) lol

  9. Yes, Cristobal is the perfect "college" coach! You nailed it!!

Is he a perfect coach? No.

But that's not what you're saying.

Cristobal is loyal. He won't be leaving for greener pastures.

    Parents love him.

    Boosters love his enthusiasm.

    Coaches like working for him.

    Players love him!

    We win LOTS of games!

Think about it, in 3 years he has 2 Pac 12 championships, a Rose Bowl win, and best recruiting classes 3 years in a row!!

Yes, we haven't been scoring tons of points, and yes, our losses have looked bad, but it's only been a few years. Do we want to go back to years with Helfrich?!

I think the best point you make is the last one, not going to the NFL.

Keeping someone with Mario's attributes around for a long time seems very enticing.

If we maintain recruiting like this for more years to come, I don't think we will be whining on this site about a lack-luster offense.

I think we will be wondering why coach Cristobal isn't paid more!

  10. I agree that anything from 12-0 to 8-4 is possible for this 2021 season.

And it's hard to know how much of last year to be considered as info for this year. It's hard to dismiss those games against Cal and OSU.

I also can't stop thinking about how bad the bowl game was...!

I project Chip and UCLA to beat USC. They get their QB back and I think that team is finally figuring it all out. USC got too many lucky bounces.

I see the north being wide open, and UCLA and ASU in the south.

Now, if our offense gets going...

    Ducks win! Ducks win!

  11. I am amazed at the conviction of so many that after only 6 or 7 games you are so sure TS can't cut it at the D1 level.

I think he was not given a fair shot. The Fiesta Bowl coaching was a confusing debacle. Yes, the Cal game was not good, but that defense stymied NFL ROTY Herbert last year.

There just isn't enough game evidence to make a fair analysis of what the ceiling is on Shough. Especially from the weird 2020 season.

I hope he lands at a good place and has a monster career. And proves to the naysayers we judged too early.
