This Forum is filled with some sports saavy members.

So as i read the article i kept asking myself this:

Why would a sports network that

         needs prime and profitable

content not want to be in control

         of a Power 5 Conferences Tier 1

         rights?

Why would ESPN not want that

         control with the most desired

         sport to broadcast, which is

         football? Especially when the

PAC Tier 1 rights will be on the

         cheap?

The PAC media rights will generate

Profits for the media rights holder.

I couldnt come up with any answer that made sense.....

    Great points HappyToBeADuck!

I think it comes down to an elite program needs two guys who can start at qb. Right now we have one and a half. I agree with Charles and others, unless Ty, going forward improves on his second half performance, we need another guy backing up Bo.

I have no problem looking to the portal for another backup QB. I just do not feel as strongly as Charles (and others) towards Ty proficiencies or lack there of.

To say the Ducks can't win a game with him playing seems very extreme given what I saw once he settled into the game. Just my thoughts.

  3. While Ty has not lived up to anywhere near the hype he received coming out of high school. I do believe he is improving.

    My take:

His nerves are still a HUGE issue for him. His first two processions were carbon copy what we saw during the season last year. He had one thought in his head.. get rid of the ball ASAP no matter the cost! Both of those series I believe ended up with Mase Funa getting hands on the ball. After that he settled in a bit and made a couple reads and check downs. I did feel towards the end of the first half (when he played with some urgency) he showed some promise, made some good reads, used his feet to buy time, and delivered some nice balls. This carried over a bit into the second half.

Do I feel he has what it takes to win games... Yes. But, not against the better third of the Pac12. I do feel more confident in putting him in for clean up duty to protect Bo from unwanted exposure to injury. That is a plus.

  4. That was the best game I've watched in a long time. I have not followed either team. But, being from San Diego I was watching through scarlet colored glasses and could not be happier with the outcome. What a game! One more to go Aztecs.

As to the Pac12 expansion sub-topic... There is not a more deserving/ logical candidate that SDSU and I definitely do feel the Pac needs a SoCal presence.

That's a pretty surprising development.  I've seen him play recently and he seemed to be doing okay.  Hopefully there's not more to it than coping with what he considers sub par performance, but odd he picked this week to step away.  I'd give most anything to be able to play that course.

He has missed the cut at 4 of his last 5 tournaments. For Aaron that has to be tough... and not up to his standard or ability. Hope he can get it sorted.

If we can make it happen--super, as I'd love to stay in the Pac-12.  But I will go along with whatever Oregon decides is best for them, and will continue to be a very intense fan.

I too love Pac12 football. To me it is the most entertaining of all the Power 5 conferences. I do not want this style of football to disappear. I hate to think of our Ducks plodding down the field the way Iowa or Wisconsin does. Made me yawn just typing that. But, unless George can work a miracle I do not see the Pac competing in 8-10 years. I'm hoping to still be around past that timeline and want my Ducks to still be a top 10-15 program. I'm blindly trusting in UO leadership to make the right call for the program's future.

With that said. I'm getting used to eating cheese curds and drinking Leinenkugel's.... Because that is what I see in our future.

I know this will sound generic but I'm a huge Oregon Ducks fan, albeit I consider Alabama as my second team.

BTW I actually don't live in the United States, I'm from Costa Rica and I started following the NCAA because of the mascots, but now I enjoy how entertaining the games and traditions are.

As Charles said, Welcome and nice to have you join us.

As to your question...while the idea of playing some Blue Bloods for our out of conference games is appealing. Oregon has been screwed several times attempting to schedule home and home games with teams meeting that description. I'd prefer to play good solid teams that would likely fulfill their side of the agreement. Maybe Baylor, TCU. I liked having BYU last year and look forward to Texas Tech this year. But, I feel (much like Charles) the Georgia, tOSU, or Alabama type games should be reserved for the playoff/bowl season.

  8. As much as I like the Pac... Oregon needs to do what's best for Oregon.

Pres Scholz, AD Mullens, and Mr. Knight need to be the ones who decide in which conference this may be.

If it were me I would be demanding at least 40 million form the Pac to stay... and I would be asking the B1G for 45 million for the first 3 years. Then full share... But, luckily no one is asking me.

I'm good with Altman sounding off here.  The Ducks put in a great NIT effort and should have been rewarded with fans to cheer them on.  Understand the year long issues, but I thought he was also speaking to the athletic department, ticket sales, social media, and promoters.  That's not Dana's job apart from leading a pep rally.  Oregon athletics should have found a way to get fans in there, especially with Wisconsin in town.

For the most part I agree.

But, this team seemed to be just going through the motions all season. Its hard for a fanbase to get excited when the players don't even seem to care.

I believe the word free throw means nobody guarding you when you shoot. Oregon shot 33% from the line. If they shoot a poor 66% they win the game! It just sickened me to watch a game given away because of poor free throw shooting. Wisconsin shot 92% from the line, 8 point swing in free throws!

    33% is flat out unacceptable.

Free throws are all about muscle memory. Obviously, these players simply do not put in enough time at the gym. Dana needs to find a way to recruit players that are leaders.

When writers cite this stuff--it is the media metric being used, but it is WRONG.  That same metric shows a very low media market in Oregon, yet the Ducks are No. 7 in the world for global fans.  The metric used for SMU is the Dallas market, when there are NOT 3 million people watching Mustang football, otherwise the 32K stadium would be a lot larger.

This use of media market size is deceptive and inaccurate to me on both sides of the spectrum as I've demonstrated.

    I agree with you.

This same metric could be used when discussing the LA schools (obviously to a lesser degree) yet B1G still jumped all over them. Media negotiations are based off possible eyeballs... not actual eyeballs. The LA area does not watch college sports. Otherwise, USC would have more fans than Oregon.

This tells me the visual media outlets could care less about real fans. They just want large numbers that look good when throwing proposals in front of possible advertisers. Similar to print media continuing to print magazines even though no one buys them. They need to have circulation numbers to back up their inflated advertising rates which is where the real money is coming from.

Where does one find such a person???

    Annie,

For you I would recommend buying a ROKU device (fairly inexpensive) from Best Buy. It will allow you to stream even on older TV's. Also, Best Buy will have techs who will help you set it up. I believe the techs at Best Buy are called their Geek Squad. It may cost a few dollars extra to have them come to your house to set it up. But, it is a one time charge, they will explain it thoroughly, and make sure you understand how to use it. I hope this helps.

Welcome to the new college football landscape. This stuff has been going on for decades. Back in the 70s I was recruited by LSU to play basketball. It was Dale Brown’s first year as head coach for the Tigers. I knew him from basketball camps I had attended with him. He was an assistant head coach at Washington State University at the time. He wanted to take me to LSU with him for his first year.

So I go down for a recruiting trip. I was picked up at the airport by some LSU alumni people who said if I would choose to come to LSU they would give my a new car every year that I attended school there and played basketball . They drove we to another alumni’s home who was high executive at Converse shoe company he said after I graduated I would get a lifetime high paying job there.

Then they drove me to another alumni who owned a bank in Baton Rouge. He handed me some spending money for the weekend and said if I chose to play basketball at LSU there would be an endless supply of money for me. I don’t think coach Brown was aware of it but I don’t know. This was for playing basketball! I can’t even imagine what a big time football player would have been offered ! It has always been there that dark under belly of alumni money. Now it’s  out in the open for all to see with no NCAA sanctions to worry about.

How's that Converse retirement plan working out? Ha!

You think it's hard to find Oregon games on the east coast?  Try doing it on the WEST coast...of EUROPE.  I have seen the Ducks play live exactly one time in the past two years - when I was in Nevada on business.  I would LOVE a streaming option.

Completely agree. Like it or not streaming will be HUGE in the future.

In my industry (motorcycle racing) the US series (MotoAmerica) owns its own streaming service. When the pandemic hit it was the only racing available worldwide. Viewership exploded. Over half of the growth was outside of the US. We have a whole new fan base. Even now that the all the other (more prestigious) series are back the MotoAmerica series has maintained its foreign fans.

This tells me it would be great for the Pac? to be the first conference on the streaming front. Once you gain fans/followers you typically do not lose them. As college football fans we need to think globally. I feel many are only worried about how it affects them.
