So Graves can only win if he has a generational talent like Sabrina? That even more means that he can't coach Xs and Os! He is so passive during games, never gets into players, never seems to demand greatness, just sort of sits there and claps his hands sometimes.
He has players that are good enough to win games, but he is slow to adjust game plans, doesn't seem to know how to counter lineups or schemes, he relies a lot on good outside shooting. I give a lot more leeway to Altman since he has proved at Oregon he can win with completely different teams, he has also won using different sorts of lineups.
Graves' teams kind of reminds me of Ernie Kent's teams, usually had good recruits but didn't always get the most out of them unless he had fantastic floor leaders. You of course need good court leaders, but for both Ernie and Graves it seems like they need player of the year candidates at lead guard.
I wouldn't fire him, but next year has to be a year where they begin to reestablish itself as a top 3 team in the league.
So...engaging with the team more will make them better shooters? Last night all the players NOT named Paopao or Rogers shot 3 for 21. That's a whopping 14%. The problem isn't lineup or offensive schemes. How would you suggest Graves should proceed? And remember, the team has been rife with injuries this year...seriously handicapping them in practice and in games.

You know the old saying..."It's not about the X's and O's, it's about the Jimmies and Joes". I think Coach Graves and his staff are doing just fine. He hasn't forgotten how to coach. So what is the problem? Mostly it's as has been stated...there is only one Sabrina! Also, this year's team also suffers from multiple injuries to key players AND poor shooting.
Here is a look at this season vs. the 2019-20 season....Sabrina's last year.
FG%
.429 vs. .509
3PT%
.358 vs. .395
FT%
.718 vs. .773
Assist/Turnover Ratio
1.3 vs. 1.9
Reb/Game
39.7 vs. 41.6
This year's team is full of life and good players. They just aren't as talented as the ladies of the past super teams. We can be a bit spoiled by OBD past successes, can't we?! Good shooting can fix all that ails. A couple more Rogers would be nice. Consistency is the mark of the professional.

Refer to the Register Guard article Charles posted above. It says the incident happened outside of the Gordon Lofts, which is a fancy condo/apartment building downtown next to 5th St. Market. So, it was definitely not on campus.
As a public school, I am unsure if the Football Team or UO Athletic Department could make team rules against athletes owning firearms for self-protection off campus. I am not a lawyer, but that could enter troubled waters because of 2nd Amendment rights.
I'm not making political opinions here at all- just speculating on Holden's return. Seems to me that if he's posting Duck stuff he's coming back. I hope he does, and I hope he plays well!
Just spit-balling here, but I'd guess that a number of athletes, especially those from the northwest, hunt and thus possess firearms. We don't even know what sort of firearm was involved. Regardless of all that, I hope a fair decision is rendered to TH by the school.

Perhaps one reason for BI's lovely and successful 6.8 ypc was the fact that he was rested. I think the successful rb use overall was a testament to Locklyn's good choices. But Nix....well that's a different story. I'd like to see him run a lot less. He's great runner, but it's obvious the Duck's offense was diminished when he was hurt. Let's hope Stein has a plan to secure Nix's health this season.

Yes, Morgan being out for USC perhaps made us look better at inside drives than we would normally. Dante is playing hero for the team. He's doing spectacularly this season. And it was good to see Richardson cut down on his foolish turnovers and score some points. Soares...uh. And WHAT happened to Guerrier? He seems a little lost this year. Has he been injured? Still, the team is rounding into better shape....and is healthier than it has been all season.
I agree with Charles. There still is room for improvement on this team. Let's see if they show it tonight. Hope so.

No new media market. We already have Denver with CU.
Cannot the same be said for UO and Portland? We do okay with OSU added to the mix. And the populations of Portland/Eugene/Corvallis is roughly equal to that of Denver/Boulder/Fort Collins.
And CSU, for a few reasons, is certainly a superior addition over SMU.

Is there any reason the PAC is not looking at Colorado State? Perfect regional matchup with CU. Excellent academics. Good enrollment levels and is fast growing. Football could be competitive in football.

Yes you can get it on Dish anywhere but not on cable, who I also get my internet from. That's an extra $100 a month minimum, I could get sling or fubu for $70 or I could watch it on Prime which I already have and cost $11.59 a month.
So far Amazon has not charged extra for sports, but that will probably change. What I don't want to pay for is the 240 channels I will never watch.
It's not just an east coast vs. west coast phenomenon. Until last month I couldn't get Ducks games, either. And I live in Oregon. It's the carrier that does or does not carry the games. I had Directv which does not carry the PAC12 Network. I now have Spectrum, which does. This was one of the major problems with good ol' Larry. He negotiated the network, unrealistically asking for the moon. And many carriers (and linear networks) just said "Go away". That is the reason you can't see the games.

MLS (Major League Soccer) is conducting a real-life experiment/jump-into-the-deep-end with streaming in just a few weeks.
Apple + will stream all league games, as an extra-cost package on top of the monthly Apple subscription fee. Only one or two marquee match up games per week will be broadcast on Fox.
As a Portland Timbers fan, I'm not wild about this, and I'm not yet sure if I'll pony up the funds. All Timbers' game have until now been available on local television/cable.
I really don't care about watching teams and games that I'm not interested in; I just want to watch the Timbers games. But, to do that I have to pay for the ability to watch all the league games.
And you have my preference. I'd gladly pay over and above the carrier costs for Timbers and Ducks games. I don't really give a hoot about other teams in their leagues. Ala carte is ala bueno for me...and I'd speculate most others here, as well.
-
I believe that the predicted success of sports streaming is totally speculative. This was the kind of thinking that went into Luddite Larry's effort to begin the PAC's own network. It wasn't cable distribution that failed. It was the gawd awful rights negotiations...particularly with Directv.
This is factual. Currently, cable is the only platform that will produce excellent broadcast results. Broadband doesn't mean broad bandwidth in delivery systems such as satellite tv. I'd like to repeat this...streaming will be an extra cost over and above cable (or any other platform). So immediate success is most likely to be in the negative column.
Assuming technology advances quickly to overcome cable reliance for streaming...years in the future as pondered by Charles, we still don't really know what the future holds. But successful, money-making sports trends are currently in the hands of PPV. Ala carte offerings have been discussed before by the various platforms. And they are still very much a possibility for our Ducks viewing future.

I have Comcast internet and an LG OLED TV with built in apps for Amazon and Netflix. I have zero buffering. Previously I used an Amazon Fire stick and a 7 year old not all that smart TV and got buffering on occasion.
Not enough to ruin the day but it became annoying sometimes. It also took much longer for either of those apps to start up.
Also any pausing of the program would cause the lips and sound to fall out of sync. That has not happened once with the new LG smart TV.
I will also add that the picture is phenomenal.
Thanks for your answer, GODUCKS. But you have sort of illuminated my point. This Comcast streaming tech is carried by CABLE tv. That is the only way streaming can be fruitfully realized. Some people think that if they have wifi, then streaming is a piece of cake. Not. It depends upon the platform (i.e. cable, dsl, satellite). Cable trounces other platforms with its speed and bandwidth. So basically one has to have cable to obtain decent streaming.
Therein lies a little problem or two. Streaming adds on another layer of pricing to the cable system. Also, cable (such as my new Spectrum) already provides tons of sports that will compete with any streaming additions. If the PAC moves into a streaming system (e.g. Apple, Amazon, Netflix, etc.) it will be competing with the other solid and much viewed sports on the basic cable platform.
And these streaming companies will have to wage a hefty financial war with established network and cable tv to obtain profitable network shares of the sports viewership. Like most of you, I believe streaming will be the next video (and audio) frontier. But even with as fast as technology advances, it will be a long slog for the companies to make serious headway in the ultra-profitable sports broadcast market. I'm not certain they have the competitive and financial will to go head-to-head with giants like NBC (which owns Comcast, by the way).
I don't know. Perhaps my old man logic is still stuck in the '60s, and I don't see the scope of culture change...as it pertains to Gen Z and later. Attitudes certainly change. Still, I see much headwind facing the growth of tv streaming. My into-the-future telescope believes that all sports will eventually be offered ala carte. So PPV will be that next wave, me thinks.
As an addendum, I'll say that I have watched a couple of Comcast cable streamed movies. (No sports, though.) There was a quite a diminished difference from the picture and audio quality of dvd/blu-rays. I did not see it on 4k capable equipment. So there is that possibility. -
I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me what current internet service provides the speed and bandwidth to provide anything streaming
without constant buffering. Good old cable is the only one I know.
-
I'm with Penn...Duck. This move, even with split broadcasting, is too large a risk to undertake at this time. The PAC is a weak conference and there will likely be a substantial loss of viewership and value (for reasons stated above as well as others). Even with the 'possibility' of increased public use of streaming services in the latter part of this decade, as long as there are linear viewing options, streaming is unlikely to be profitable in the near term. Netflix has been bleeding customers recently and Amazon has been axing employees like cheap trees. These may or may not represent viable and profitable platforms for the PAC...but I think only in the long term when all plasma tv's and aged fans are long gone.
Lastly, I'd like to add that satellite streaming potential is minimal due to bandwidth problems. How about DSL? I just dumped CenturyLink (gawd-awful customer service). Our download speed...with their latest modem, was a pedestrian 75mbps. (Upload was sick at .75 mbps. POINT 75!) And now, how about the oft-stated 'end of life' cable (Spectrum) that we went to? 365 mbps d/l and 11 mbps upload. (I am told that upload will soon be going to 100 meg.) Unless I completely misunderstand (an unfortunate possibility), this "dying" cable is the very best method for streaming without a gaggle of interrupts.
Streaming? I'm with Annie. I'm too damn old to play with tech that I don't want, and too cheap/poor to gather other expenditures I don't need (new tv, streaming devices, etc.) I think streaming is definitely for the youth culture that exists today. Commentary on the latter withheld to protect the innocent.

If DL is still around in 20223 (
) I think he will bring the excitement back to the Ducks ... after oh so boring Mario ball.

Over at 247, five predictions have been made....four by South Carolina Insiders, and one by a neutral guy from Maryland who has a 100% accuracy rating for this recruiting cycle. (Close to DC, no?!) As you can surmise, the SC guys have Harbor going there. The MD fellow, a publisher of Maryland Sports, has a high confidence of Harbor to the Ducks! Predictions, with one SC exception, were made today. Oh, and Rivals likes him as a Duck, too.
I hope Harbor's girlfriend either transfers to Oregon or knows she will be logging a lot of air miles in her future.

Welcome to the new college football landscape. This stuff has been going on for decades. Back in the 70s I was recruited by LSU to play basketball. It was Dale Brown’s first year as head coach for the Tigers. I knew him from basketball camps I had attended with him. He was an assistant head coach at Washington State University at the time. He wanted to take me to LSU with him for his first year. So I go down for a recruiting trip.
I was picked up at the airport by some LSU alumni people who said if I would choose to come to LSU they would give my a new car every year that I attended school there and played basketball . They drove we to another alumni’s home who was high executive at Converse shoe company he said after I graduated I would get a lifetime high paying job there. Then they drove me to another alumni who owned a bank in Baton Rouge.
He handed me some spending money for the weekend and said if I chose to play basketball at LSU there would be an endless supply of money for me. I don’t think coach Brown was aware of it but I don’t know. This was for playing basketball! I can’t even imagine what a big time football player would have been offered ! It has always been there that dark under belly of alumni money. Now it’s out in the open for all to see with no NCAA sanctions to worry about.
Great post. Thanks for the insight, 51. When I went to Cal in the '60s, I wasn't offered bupkiss.
But now a question. Did you sign with LSU?

By the way, Ware has a better shooting %, overall and for 3-pt. than Richardson. Sad. It seems Richardson, who thankfully has cut down on his turnovers lately, has had a tough time regaining his form after his late season injury last year.

Dana recruited a ton of players to see who could play--but most were injured for the first two-thirds of the season. Now we see how everything changes when Cousinard and Barthelemy are healthy, and Richardson can play off someone else being the point guard.
It helps to sit Soares, who is a terrible shooter, and now we see the emergence of Nate Bittle making the hustle plays that win games. I am fine with sitting Ware, as we've played well without him.
There was something about Ware's court demeanor that seemed recognizable...but I could not put my finger on it. Then it hit me a day later--it is the same blah presence, the same detachment that Ty Thompson has when he is in a game. Agree?
Jermaine Cousinard
I agree on the comparo of Ware to TT. Same blank look.
Soares requires some getting used to. He's an agressive, sometimes over-agressive, defensive player. The Ducks really need his D. But you're right about his shooting ... which, by the way, is only slightly worse than Richardson's.
If Richardson is more than 2 feet from the hoop, it's usually a brick. (I say usually, because sometimes he must close his eyes and hit a 3 like last night's basket.) Oh, and it's said that the Ducks have the worst 3 shooting team in the conference. Sad but obvious. Catching teams that have a big lead requires good outside shooting. Ducks are mighty short on that skill set.
Cousinard (and Dante, as well) is going to be the Duck's savior this season and its tournament hope. The guy is a hustler with a great shot.

Very true KCDuck, my Duck-Brother.
That is another part of this puzzle that is befuddling to me. If that entire family group comes back excited about Oregon, is she going to throw cold water on it?
To me, all of this drama and questions adds to the entertainment value, and the excitement of the announcements on Wednesday.
Considering all that Oregon has to offer, and the fact that we were the last visit within days of the signing date, it would favor us.
But another phenomenon in recruiting that the savvy experienced analysts will refer to, is how the distance factor doesn’t really show up until crunch time in the last two days of deciding.
The realization of that long flight back, may make distance a major factor.
Another factor is how he has a girlfriend that is running track at South Carolina, and one Oregon site moderator has noted that girlfriends have won recruiting battles every single time in the past.
Another negative factor, is how the mother is so sold on Michigan. The parents usually win the recruiting final decision, as that was the major reason we lost Hicks to Texas ATM.
Yes, Oregon checks all of Harbor‘s boxes better than any school, by a mile. Thus this recruitment is quite interesting, entertaining, and befuddling!
I wonder how Harbor's girlfriend would enjoy running track for Oregon.....

I absolutely agree that it won't be as much of a problem as the Ball brothers situation, I also agree that Dana will not bow down to pressure to give him more minutes than he deserves. I just think it might not be worth it to have the attention when the team is going to be coming off a second incredibly disappointing finish.
It really has nothing to do with how I think Bronny is as a player or even how LeBron might react to how his son is used, I suspect that both will be ok from that perspective. It's the media attention he will get, the constant questioning of his play, or Dana's coaching helping or diminishing his play.
LeBron is not noted for keeping his opinion to himself. I think he'd have plenty to say about how Bronny is used. Bronny may or may not be overrated but let's hope if he does come, the media attention and his bullish dad stay away from Eugene.

Perspective must be embraced. If 2 or 3 bold decisions in challenging situations had turned out differently (e.g. the One Play Thompson, 4th down vs. the beavs) we would have cheered him as a gunslinging football savior who completely erased the sour memory of MC. Further, we'd be wringing our hands about him leaving to coach Alabama in a year.
There are no guarantees for winning in football. Other teams can present matchup difficulties, are have their best game against the Ducks, or are simply better teams than our beloved Ducks. Perfection in football is almost as rare as a unicorn. DL tried some things that didn't work. He also tried a lot of things that certainly did. Let's give it a measure. I'm going with 99% good to great and 1% oops to yetch. How would you grade his overall work?I want DL to be our Ducks' coach...and for a long time. I also want a more attacking defense. Hopefully that comes in year 2. I want a natty for our boys. But then...I want a new 77" tv for Christmas....but the missus says "Nyet". So one can't have everything. Can one? Nevertheless, I have a nice 8 year old 58" plasma in the meantime. (Unless I accidentally break it, heh heh.)
