  1. Thanks for the fine article, Ryan.  I enjoy your writing.

I'd just make one comment about the last word in it ... "respectable".  The phrase was "... it is comforting to think that in only three short decades they have become, at the very worst, respectable."

As it was italicized, I realize the word was intended to carry more meaning.  But I'd like to add a modern era addendum and elucidate the phrase with "Since 2000, the Ducks have amassed a whopping 73%-win percentage."  Further, these are the teams that were playing during the most important time when almost every Duck player/recruit has been alive.  Yes, the Ducks have improved over time.  But WOW have they ever.

I don't know where that percentage lies with regards to teams such as Alabama (and their annual games against The Sisters of the Poor Univ. teams), but it's not far behind.  By the way, Alabama also had a reasonably poor historical record prior to 2006.

UW is THE game. The toughest out for OBD I think. Win in Seattle, and I have complete confidence the rest of the games are winnable (barring the mentioned potential injuries and bad bounces). UW is certainly winnable, but really feels like almost a 50/50 toss-up. If the team that beat up CU shows up, look out Dawgs!!

Doubt has killed more dreams than failure.  Ducks by 14!

Oregon is even spending good money at ESPN with the Bodacious adds, come on show us the Love.

ESPN just really hates Oregon, more than most channels, likely because we're one of their biggest viewership losses next year. Why promote a team that you aren't make money off. They halve to promote USC with the potential two-time Heisman winner.

"They're all about clicks.  And we're about wins!"

If the 2-3 week estimate for return is to be believed, the injury is not head (contusion), neck or internal organ (spleen) as those have a much longer recovery. The character of the hit and the way he went down implies torso trauma to me, likely rib fractures and/or an underlying lung contusion, and that fits the timeline better.

My two broken ribs and the sequelae liver damage took 6 weeks before I was able to carry out normal tasks.  (Included were 4 weeks of sleeping in a recliner chair.)  Ouch.

I, too, feel for the young man.  I hope he has a brilliant football career.

  6. It was certainly an unnecessary hit.  The YouTube doc didn't notice the awkward landing of the knee.  There looks to be possible tendon damage.  Also, having suffered broken ribs and organ damage in a similar fashion, that hit under the pads on the right side appear to be a possible problem for Hunter.

  7. I just re-watched the game.  David is completely correct.  The TT o-line was holding like crazy.  (Great article, David.)  There were a number of other instances where officiating was ....  Oh wait, Charles would boot me if I say what I think about that.  So, I'll leave it at ... "It's early in the season.  They'll get better."  I hope.

I too was encouraged by the d-line performance.  They could be among the best we've seen since the Nick Reed days.  (Of course, Nick and d-line friends were aided on the back side by the likes of Chung, Ward, Byrd, Thurmond, Matthews, and Paysinger.

IEither Crepea or Oram posted in an article that since 2000, TT has only lost 2 OOC games at home out of 50 games. Of course I dont know the level of competition but thats impressive. Ask Texas and Oklahoma how easy it is to win in Lubbock....

I checked back to 2000 (and had a cursory glance back to 1993).  The following information came from Sports-Reference.com.

TT beat no "prime" teams in that period.  They won two OOC games of any consequence.  One was AZ St (big deal, eh?) and SMU when the Ponies were ranked #24.  That's it.  The rest of the wins came from the SWC type conferences.  They did appear in a gaggle of bowl games where they beat Miss. St. a couple of times.  Assuming I missed nothing, I was NOT impressed by their OOC scheduling or winnings.

I didn't read Crepea or Oram, but they didn't look all that closely if they were impressed.

  9. I'd like to chime in with something else here.  It just grates on my nerves to hear the ubiquitous use of incorrect pronouns.  Are they not teaching English any longer in American schools?  Here is the worst type of offender ... "Me and Johnny are going to the game."  Taking an icepick to my ears would be more pleasant.

Several of the D starters were not the personnel that we expected to see and may not have been the majority of the 'ones' on the depth chart. They got taken advantage of for a single series. Concerning, but not doom and gloom. It was rapidly fixed by the coaches.

Unfortunately, that was not the case in Charles' first video.  Numbers 0, 1, and 2 were experienced starters, Johnson, Burch, and Bassa. They were biting on that qb fake like kids on Snickers bars. There were some bonehead coverages on that first drive by experienced players.  I guess I'm with the plurality here ... namely that TL gets a substandard grade, at least for last season and the first PSU 'drive'.  Also, some of the later incompletions were bad passes and not because of good coverage.

BUT, that said, and overall, I thought the defense played pretty well and have given me hope for the season.

  11. I think TT did a fine job.  But let us please reserve a tiny bit of our enthusiasm for his play ... and also that of the team.  We'll certainly learn more against a team with a pulse.  The PSU game was a great one for us to watch and I was joyous.  But a celebration of expectation should more likely be a modulated atta-boy/team and some hope for the future.  It's a LONG season and the PAC is loaded this year.  Work is yet to be done.

    GO DUCKS!

After downloading Sling I called and gave Spectrum the Lex Grossman treatment. Both companies are to blame, but Disney holds all the cards because they own most of the content, so I can’t really drop them.

Apparently Sling does not carry the PAC-12 Network.  Are you keeping the cable in order to watch all things Ducks?
