  1. I expect Johnathan Smith will do well given all the resources and connections MSU has built over the decades.  He should have more and better talent coming into the program than he could ever have expected at OSU.

That said, boy, is he in a tough environment.  MSU is going to want to see a competitive team at or near the top of the league in about 3 years. I don't know how patient they'll be if JS doesn't have them winning 9 or 10 games by year 3.  Maybe in the past they were patient but I don't know nowadays as everyone wants and expects a new Head Coach to have enormous impact immediately.  Given the $ they spend it's easy to see why.

Good luck to you Johnathan - but now you're gonna have to deal with Dan Lanning all over again, on top of Jim Harbaugh, Ryan Day and Karen DeBoer. R U sure you really want that?

What's scary is not this week but next week, if Alabama beats Georgia. Really, that should just mean that Texas should be ahead of Alabama, who should be ahead of Georgia, and that Oregon and Washington should  be ahead of all 3 of those teams

I can't really see this Alabama team (which was lucky in the extreme to beat even Auburn) beating Georgia.  But, I guess anything can happen. Alabama is teetering on the edge of elimination instead of dominating weaker supposedly weaker teams.  (much like UW)

  3. Transitive property - that's a mathematical term, no?

I see what you mean and if the selection committee were really interested in such things I can definitely see your point.  After all, they sort of use the same principle in reverse when determining SOS and who has the best wins.  As Texas's screaming illustrates.  "But, we beat Alabama!"

  4. I'll have to admit I was a bit nervous when I saw this in the latest from John Canzano. It was just yesterday we learned OBD's Will Stein was named as a candidate for said award.  I don't pay for the Canzano articles so even though I can provide a link to it here, maybe one of you guys can help us out.

Another interesting bit was the fact that there are two former HC's among the total of 7 coaches interviewing for the Beavers job.  I was wondering if the dumpster-fire of a situation there in Corvallis would attract any good candidates.  Apparently there are numerous coaches who are interested.

Hire expected as soon as Wednesday, per source.

  5. The video was excellent and well produced.  The choice to couple it with Phil Collins 'In the Air Tonight' epic.  Very stirring.  Do they play these in the locker room when the Ducks get ready to play or are these for us - the fans?  Send these to our recruits wavering on their decision of where to commit.  The phones may start ringing off the hook.

  6. IDK, guys.  After watching Alabama beat a so-so team (Auburn) by a fluke, a real screw-up  I just don't see this team upsetting Georgia in the title game; Nick Sabin or no Nick Sabin.

That was Auburn's game and they lost it with a terrible defensive decision by the coaches.  This isn't the Alabama team we've all come to expect.  Georgia may be vulnerable this year, but not (imo) to this Alabama team.  I hope I'm right.

We potentially have three games left. So, to your comment, I'm afraid that I agree... Let Bo run when the opportunity is there.

I don't think there's ever been anything stopping him from running except himself.  From what I've seen, he has just about total free reign to run whatever play he thinks will work (from within the Stein scheme).  But I think he knows his getting injured would be fatal for Oregon's chances to win the Championship - and he's right.  He's probably discussed this in-depth with Lanning & Stein throughout the season.

He's thinking more and more like an assistant coach and less and less like he has to carry all the load on his back.  Another reason, imo, he should be a no-brainer for the Heisman.

  8. I don't think Johnathan Smith ever lied about his feelings about Oregon State.  He was a Beaver from the bottoms of his feet to the top of his head.  And I think he'd still be the HC there now if it weren't for the whole fiasco with the end of the Pac-12.

With just them and WSU left and not even a single game scheduled yet for next season, with the future of both programs completely up in the air like it is, who wouldn't want to jump at a chance like MSU?  He'd been crazy not to take the job.

I fully expect I'm gonna lose my gentleman's bet with LogHaulin.  OSU does look like it's gonna fade into FBS irrelevancy - unless somehow their AD pulls off some sort of miracle and finds a great replacement for Smith.  But good luck with that for all the reasons stated above.

We've had some great teams along the way, but I don't remember seeing a team with the focus and consistency that this team has displayed over these last 6 games.

I don't remember a Ducks team being this strong at the end of the season.  One reason is they've remained healthy and are deep in crucial positions.  The other reason being Dan Lanning.  Something happened to the Ducks after that loss in Seattle.  Somehow, they became a better team.  It's like they just ... woke up to their full  potential. That part I attribute 100% to their Head Coach.

  10. The solution to this dilemma is simple: take a 5-yard penalty on 1st down.  If that doesn't help, take another on 2nd down.  From 20 yards out Oregon is lethal. If need be, make sure to move the ball to the mid-field point.  Cam's better straight-on than angled, imo.

(U guys know I'm speaking facetiously, right?)

Oh good Lord, NO. Oh please, oh please, NO.

I am now going to go directly to my happy place and put any possible thoughts of this happening out of my head.

I think the Ducks will cover.  I think the Ducks will overwhelm a pretty darn good UW team.  The Ducks are better than pretty darn good.  That's my happy place.

  12. We've heard various pundits around the country admit, (even if reluctantly) that Oregon is probably the best 1-loss team in the country.  Who else thinks they're "better than their record"?

Opening line for the Championship game this Friday had #5 Oregon favored by -7.5 over #3 Washington.  The line has since moved to -9.5. Las Vegas is a neutral field eliminating the ~3 points usually given for home field advantage.  The O/U is 67.  Evidently the gamblers think Oregon is > UW.

Do you guys think Oregon will cover?  Will they score their season's average of ~42 points?  We all know they'll win, right ?   GO DUCKS!
