  1. Mase Funa feels Oregon defenders 'showed what we have this season' Mase Funa nearly opened Saturday's scrimmage in the same fashion he closed last fall's miraculous win in Pullman. The senior defender leapt into the backfield, identifying the play call based up on the tight end's alignment, and collided with Ty Thompson's pass attempt to Bucky Irving. Unable to complete the catch to make another house call, this pass landed on the turf with a thud. "I tried to jump it. If I didn't have the elbow brace, I would've had the flexibility to catch it," he said. "But, no excuses. I've got to catch it." His decisive action speaks to his improved football IQ, but also to the monotony of spring practice where both sides of the ball have been exposed to the entirety of the opposing side's playbook. Funa's play set the tone for what was a dominant first half performance from both defenses. Neither offense scored in the first quarter, and Funa's Green Team held the opposing offense without a first down until the final series of the opening half. 2. Ty Thompson showed it all during 2023 Spring Game For how bad the Ducks' sophomore quarterback looked in the first half, he looked like the quarterback the Ducks were hoping to see in the second half. Thompson connected on a 63-yard touchdown pass to Tez Johnson that allowed the speedy receiver to showcase his breakaway speed. Thompson later connected with junior Kris Hutson on a deep post that saw the Ducks gain 70 yards before scoring one play later. Kyle Kasper caught not one but two darts thrown his way by Thompson that only Kasper could catch. "To be able to get some shots at the end, I think that was big," said Lanning. Thompson finished the game leading all quarterbacks with 274 yards passing two touchdowns, and he completed 16 of his 34 pass attempts. "He had some incredible throws, deep throws, touch throws, firm throws," said Nix. "I think he showed it all today." 4. Breakout performances highlight Oregon's 2023 spring game Last year we saw the offense light up the scoreboard but after a scoreless first quarter, it became clear Saturday that each team’s defense was much more in sync than either offense during Oregon's spring game. Yes, it’s still spring football and offensive players in particular take more time to get fully acclimated to their groupings, but questions about how the defense stacks up to the offense at this point, have been answered. Though it might’ve not been the most exciting game to watch in the first half, the defensive physicality that head coach Dan Lanning has emphasized as a difference between his first spring as head coach and this one really did show up. A lot of eyes were drawn to Jordan Burch coming off of the edge, and for good reason. The South Carolina transfer has been lauded by his coaches and teammates for his sheer stature and how he attacks rushing the quarterback, and he put all the talk to show on Saturday by generating at least two “would-be” sacks and affected quarterback Ty Thompson’s decision-making on more than one occasion. Breakout performances highlight Oregon's 2023 spring game OREGON.RIVALS.COM There were several impressive performances as Oregon wrapped up the spring Saturday at Autzen Stadium.
  5. Column: After familiar start, QB Ty Thompson showed growth at UO spring game For the first 29 minutes and six seconds of game time on Saturday afternoon, things went about as poorly as they could have for Oregon Ducks redshirt sophomore quarterback Ty Thompson. At the annual spring game with a chance to show his offseason improvement as the leader of the yellow team, Thompson completed just one of his first eight passes, and the single completion came on an underhand pitch that traveled less than a yard in the air. Things could have been worse, of course; of those eight pass attempts, three could have easily been intercepted. The very first play of the game was almost disastrous, with Thompson locking in on a running back flaring out to the right and throwing an ill-advised screen pass despite the fact that LB Mase Funa had jumped the route and was ready to take it for a TD the other way. Fortunately for Thompson — and every Oregon fan in the building who was desperate to see even a glimmer of hope from the Ducks’ former 4-star quarterback — the pass fell incomplete, and kept Thompson’s turnover record clean for the day. 6. Oregon football: 3 takeaways from the Ducks' spring game The Oregon Ducks football team concluded its spring game on Saturday with the green team defeating the yellow team, 23-20. The spring game is not solely about the final score and stats. It's also a way to showcase how well the Ducks can perform on a stage with all the bells and whistles that go with a Division I football game. "Overall happy with the performance," head coach Dan Lanning said after the game. "Certainly, some things that we want to clean up and fix, but I thought it was a good indication ... of the season and where we can get better moving forward." Oregon has the potential for another great year after the Ducks went 10-3 last season, including a win over North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl. Here are three takeaways from the Oregon spring game: Oregon football: 3 takeaways from the Ducks' spring game WWW.REGISTERGUARD.COM Head coach Dan Lanning said he was happy with the overall performance.
  7. Top-ranked recruits react to Oregon Ducks spring game visit While the fans in the stands were soaking in a beautiful sunny day in Eugene and enjoying the chance to get back inside Autzen Stadium to watch the Oregon Ducks’ annual spring game, a large group of top-rated recruits was down on the sidelines taking it all in, enjoying the raucous atmosphere for a scrimmage in April. While it’s always important to make sure that fans are happy, one of the biggest objectives of the weekend for Dan Lanning and his staff was making sure that the recruits in attendance enjoyed their visits. Be it meetings with coaches, tours of the facility, photo shoots in the uniforms, or the game itself, this was a big weekend for the Ducks to make an impression on some of the most talented players in the 2024 class and beyond. To nobody’s surprise, a vast majority of the recruits left with great reviews. Here are some of the top reactions on Twitter after Saturday’s game. 8. 7 major takeaways from Oregon Ducks' spring game After months without football inside Autzen Stadium, there were hours of fun to be had in Eugene on Saturday afternoon while the annual Oregon Ducks’ spring game took place. While it was an inter-squad scrimmage that didn’t ultimately mean a ton in the grand scheme of things, it offered Oregon fans and media members a chance to see some of the new faces on the team, and what the updated version of the Ducks will look like going into 2023. We saw several highlights, a breakout performance from Tez Johnson and Cole Martin, and the grittiness and tenacity that makes QB Bo Nix special. We also got to see a roller-coaster performance from Ty Thompson that should ultimately leave fans with a bit more confidence than they had coming into the game. Let’s start there. Here are my biggest takeaways from the spring game, starting with No. 13. 9. Defense, long passes highlight Oregon Ducks spring game Oregon’s defense set the tone early in Saturday’s spring game. Mase Funa had a tackle for loss and three of 11 pass breakups for the Green team, which defeated the Yellow squad 23-20 on a picturesque afternoon at Autzen Stadium. Funa batted down the first two passes of the day by Ty Thompson, nearly intercepting the first. “That’s the bomb play that the offense loves to run,” Funa said. “They’ve been running it all spring ball. I’ve seen it; they motioned the tight end to go three open, they jumped the back to my side. I was like oh, boom, he’s going to do it. I tried to jump it. 11. Ducks Win 12th in a Row It took hits from all nine starters and clutch pitching down the stretch for No. 14 Oregon to win its 12th consecutive game by defeating California, 5-3, Saturday at Levine-Fricke Field. More importantly, Oregon took over sole possession of third in the Pac-12 and moved to within a half game of second place Washington in the standings with four games to play. The Ducks (34-11, 13-7) jumped out to a 5-0 lead through four innings before Cal (31-16-1, 7-12-1) tightened things up with a three-run fifth. But relievers Raegan Breedlove and Morgan Scott shut down the Bears over the final two innings, allowing just one hit to preserve the victory. "We're a very competitive team so even when (Cal) did get those runs, we immediately came together and it was like 'we got this. We're still in this. We're still going to win'," said KK Humphreys, who homered for the second straight game. "I think just the confidence – we feel it in each other." 14. Oregon OL TJ Bass signs with the Dallas Cowboys as UDFA As expected, Oregon offensive lineman TJ Bass watched the NFL draft come and go without his name being called, but that didn’t deter him from signing with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent. The Cowboys perennially produce a good offensive line, and TJ Bass will be the newest member of that group. After a disappointing end to the season in 2022, the Dallas Cowboys parted ways with their former star running back, Ezekiel Elliot. Next season, Dallas will be looking to reshape their offense and it will be interesting to see if Bass has a role to play in their 2023 system. The 6-foot-4, 325-pounder from Deming, Wash. came to Oregon in 2020 Bass as a junior college transfer. He was a four-star recruit coming out of Butte College and was the No. 1 junior college offensive lineman in 2019. Last season, the Ducks had one of the strongest O-lines in the PAC-12. Bass was a big part of that success and was named first-team All-PAC-12 and second-team All-American, for his efforts. Bass is proficient at both pass and run blocking which makes a desirable player at the guard position. 15. DUCKS PUT ON SPRING SHOW The Ducks put on a show Saturday for the annual Spring Game. Big-time alumni dotted the sidelines in Autzen Stadium, big plays were produced on both sides of the ball, and some newcomers had the chance to make a big impression on the estimated crowd of 45,000 sun-splashed fans on hand to take it all in. The Spring Game was technically practice No. 14 out of 15 for the Ducks this spring, with the final workout scheduled for Monday morning. But it was the showcase event on the spring schedule, the unofficial conclusion to a camp that allowed veterans to illustrate their development, newcomers to showcase their talents and the staff to get a sense of the team they will field when the 2023 season opens in September. 16. Chase Cota signs with Detroit Lions as UDFA Now that the 2023 NFL draft has come to a close, some players that weren’t fortunate enough to have their names called in Kansas City will begin to sign with teams as undrafted free agents. One of those players is former Oregon Ducks wide receiver, Chase Cota, who is now a Detroit Lion. Chase Cota surprised a lot of Oregon Ducks fans in 2022. After coming from UCLA as a 3-star transfer there wasn’t much expectation that he would have a large role in the team’s offense. Last year Cota caught 36 passes for 497 yards receiving, which were the best marks of his career. In the fourth game last year against Washington State, Cota broke onto the scene as a high-caliber Ducks receiver. He caught 7 passes that game for 84 yards. His best game, however, came against Oregon State — something not a lot of players from last year’s team can say — grabbing nine passes for 136 yards and a touchdown.
