Transfer Portal Interests for Ducks
Pennsylvania Duck replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
UTSA star WR Zakhari Franklin is available; Can Will Stein and the Ducks land him? There are a lot of very talented wide receivers currently on the Oregon Ducks roster, from Troy Franklin to Tez Jonson; from Kris Hutson to Traeshon Holden. That doesn’t mean that head coach Dan Lanning, and particularly offensive coordinator Will Stein don’t want to add more if they have the ability, though. Lanning has consistently said this spring that they will always look to add more talent if it becomes available. It just so happens that one of the most talented players in the nation just became available via the transfer portal, and the Ducks’ offensive coordinator might have as good of a relationship as anyone in the nation. Former UTSA Roadrunner’s wide receiver Zakhari Franklin entered the transfer portal over the weekend, becoming one of the hottest names on the open market. Franklin leaves UTSA as the school’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. Will Stein spent three seasons with Franklin at UTSA, where the WR saw a massive breakout, scoring 37 touchdowns over those three years. The Ducks are clearly in the market for a transfer portal WR, which has been highlighted by their recruitment of former USC WR Gary Bryant Jr., who is projected to commit to the Ducks in the coming weeks. Might they also try and add Franklin as well? Tracking where former Ducks signed UDFA deals Saturday marked a successful day for the Ducks at the 2023 NFL Draft, as six players from last season's 10-3 team were selected. Christian Gonzalez went first, finding a new home with the New England Patriots before D.J. Johnson (Carolina Panthers), Noah Sewell (Denver Broncos), Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu (Baltimore Ravens), Jordon Riley (New York Giants), and Alex Forsyth (Broncos). "Both of our guys got drafted at the end of today, I'm excited for those guys," said head coach Dan Lanning on his draft experience on Thursday. "I'm sure we'll have a few more that will pop. You get to see guys living out their dreams so those guys are all deserving players, and they just need a shot somewhere. So excited to see them get a chance." Despite the influx of talent officially drafted into the league, Oregon still had plenty of talent that signed UDFA deals with teams immediately following the seventh round. Today, we'll go through where former Oregon athletes have signed as undrafted free agents. This article gives a little more info than the previous ones regarding the UCFAs... Tez Johnson excited fanbase with sizzling touchdown in spring game debut No play on Saturday afternoon stirred the Autzen faithful more than Tez Johnson's house call. A defensive-dominated contest for one half, Johnson inserted some offense into the day's mix in the third quarter when he broke a pair of tackles, found a crease down the sideline and won a foot race to the end zone for a 63-yard score. "Tez is that guy where right when he gets a step on you, he can be very dangerous," linebacker Jeffrey Bassa said of Johnson. "He's not the biggest, but he is the fastest." Simply put, this is why Johnson is in Eugene. A highly-productive two-year starter at Troy, Johnson tortured Sun Belt competition with his blend of agility, speed and creativity. Oregon's array of offensive weapons was vast a year ago, but it did lack a player like him. Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington are capable of being game-breakers, but from the backfield, and neither Troy Franklin or Kris Hutson have proven to be nearly as adept with the ball in their hands. Oregon's offense showed its potential of picking up where it left off last season The 2023 Oregon Football Spring Game was a chance for the Ducks to hit the field and show the public what their football program looks like roughly four months before the football season starts in the fall. For Oregon's offense, it was the first look at how new Offensive Coordinator Will Stein is putting his stamp on the Oregon Ducks. "Offensively, our job is to get our best players the ball as many times as possible. Plays are highly overrated. It's about the players," said Stein earlier in the spring. "Here at Oregon, we have unbelievable players." The Ducks did just that on Saturday and got their talented skill players into the football quickly. We saw deep shots that resulted in long touchdown plays being converted, we saw explosion plays over the middle of the field via passing attacks, and Oregon's running game showed off their cut-back abilities that were so popular last season. "I feel like we showed a lot. We took a few shots, we did some cutback, we did some naked, we did a lot of it, but we held a lot because it's the spring game," Oregon senior QB Bo Nix said of Will Stein's offensive debut. "I am excited to play with him and see what he does on a game day." DUCKS LEAVING THE DESERT WITH SEVEN WINS The Oregon track and field team racked up seven wins and four top-10 program efforts Saturday at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. Coupled with their marks at the High Performance in Corvallis, the Ducks finished the penultimate weekend of the regular season with 19 top-three finishes and more than 30 lifetime and season bests. Shelby Moran secured the first win of the meet with a day's best of 65.32m/214-3 in the hammer throw. She finished ahead of two unattached entries in second and third, and out-distanced the closes collegian by nearly 20 feet. To complete the sweep in the UO sweep in the hammer, Mason Strunk registered a season-best mark of 65.27m/214-1 to close out the men's competition. The Salem, Ore., native went from fourth to first with his third-round attempt of 65.04m/213-4 which would have stood up for the win. Strunk went on to add another measure of beyond 65 feet in the fifth round. Complete results are available in the article below...
