Spring Football Practice: 4/6/23

Notable quotes from defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi after Ducks' practice The Dan Lanning era for the Oregon Ducks has brought many great things to the program. However, one of the few downsides of his tenure in Eugene is the fact that he rarely makes his coordinators available to the media. Under Mario Cristobal, we were able to talk to both offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead and defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter each and every week, but under Lanning, that has changed. The last time that we got to talk to DC Tosh Lupoi was back in August during fall camp. So on Thursday, when he was made available to the media following the Ducks’ fourth practice of the year, there were a lot of questions to ask, and a lot of things to talk about. Between the frustrating 2022 season defensively, the new players coming in, the new coaches on the staff, and many other things, Lupoi was a busy man answering questions. Here are some of the most notable quotes from him on Thursday. Oregon Football: Notable quotes from Tosh Lupoi after Ducks’ practice DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM “We didn’t play well enough,” Tosh Lupoi said of Oregon’s 2022 defense. “We can continue to climb to improve and that’s what we’re doing right now.” -

Tosh Lupoi and Oregon's defense attacking their weakpoints from 2022 in early periods of spring ball Year two of Oregon's defense under Defensive Coordinator Tosh Lupoi is underway and the Ducks have plenty of holes to fill, new talent to merge with returning talent and build off a first season that saw a lot of success but also left a lot of room for improvement. "Now it's certainly exciting to see the culture unfold, guys buying in, having a true offseason together," said Lupoi after Oregon's fourth spring practice of the year. One of the first steps for Oregon's staff and defense will be to find its new vocal leaders. Gone are seniors Bennett Williams and DJ Johnson, and underclassmen Noah Sewell and Christian Gonzalez declared for the NFL Draft with eligibility remaining. "We're going to make it more of a position responsibility," Lupoi said of filling the leadership void. "Some of the guys that played with us last season, and certainly some guys who are competing now. We're going to start clean and fresh. No one here has a guaranteed job. We're going to try and improve every single day." Men's Basketball Recruiting

Oregon makes Final 4 for Georgia Transfer Kario Oquendo The Oregon Duck men's basketball team has made the final list of schools for a Top 50 NCAA Transfer Prospect this offseason. Georgia small forward Kario Oquendo has one year of eligibility left and has elected to use it somewhere else. The Ducks were one of four schools to make the cut. On Social Media Thursday morning the 6-foot-5 wing announced he was down to Auburn, Utah, Oregon, and Nebraska. Oquendo started 59 of the 60 games he played at Georgia over the last two seasons. He averaged 14.0 points, shot 27 percent on 3-pointers, made 72.9 percent from the free throw line, and then averaged 3.5 rebounds and 1 steal per game over 27.2 minutes per game. Oquendo has a connection with Oregon's coaching staff, and the Ducks making the cut makes sense. Oregon Executive Director Brian Fish helped recruit and coach Oquendo at Georgia during his first basketball season in the SEC in 2021-22. Fish arrived at Oregon this past offseason and started his second stint with the Ducks. An Open Letter to Rob Mullens....
Pennsylvania Duck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I can't speak much about game scheduling, but I do think that Mullens could do a lot more promoting UO in athletics. How many of you are aware of how our spring sports are doing? -- Are you aware we have some pretty good golfers? -- Did you know that there are tennis matches going on and how they're doing? -- Did you even know we have an acrobatics and tumbling team currently competing? -- Our beach volleyball team is now 2/3 of the way through their season? -- The Lacrosse teams' next 3 games are at home? On OBDF, we have tried to keep you updated on baseball, softball and a little of track and field. How many of us could say that we are aware of our Duck teams because of promotions from the Athletic department? Would you be updated on these three sports if you didn't read about them in OBDF? Granted I have listed minor sports above, but do you see much promoting for even the major sports like football and basketball? I don't know, maybe I am just not on the list to receive athletic promotions. It seems to me the easiest base to promote to are alumns. Sad to say, but the Nike name seems to promote Oregon athletics more than the money spent by the athletic department. I don't have the answer to the problem, but someone paid close to a million bucks should have it. -
Spring football practice is scheduled for today. I am starting this thread early so that posters may start dropping items in as they occur. There are 15 spring practices scheduled this season. Each practice will have it's own thread on OBDF and all articles in that thread will only pertain to that particular practice. This should help in keeping information organized and make it easier for our readers to navigate. FYI, in the article below you will see the dates for the practices scheduled. Be sure to check in later today as practice articles, interviews, and updates start coming in. Speedster Gary Bryant Jr. Could Be Difference-Maker for Oregon New Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein has been open about his offense and his ability to spread the ball around amongst multiple receivers in it. That’s been a very attractive selling point to wide receivers since his arrival. One of the key components on offense is speed. Speed in the backfield, speed at receiver. While Oregon has worked on adding that element, there is still plenty of room for more additions. For Oregon, one of those answers is former USC wide receiver Gary Bryant. The Ducks have made Bryant a priority in this recruiting cycle which has resulted in an official visit and remaining a favorite as he enters decision time. But why would Bryant be a good fit at Oregon? Speedster Gary Bryant Jr. Could Be Difference-Maker for Oregon - On3 WWW.ON3.COM One of the top remaining transfers, wide receiver Gary Bryant Jr. could be a huge difference-maker in this Oregon offense.

Oregon State baseball weekend primer: Beavers visit Oregon Ducks for 3-game rivalry series After limping through most of March, the Oregon State baseball team has regained its footing at the perfect time — right before facing the rival Oregon Ducks in a crucial three-game series in Eugene. The Beavers have won six of their last eight games and earned a pair of Pac-12 series victories along the way, showing signs of life after a forgettable stretch in which they lost six of seven and suffered a sweep at the Stanford Cardinal. But one of the biggest tests of the season looms this weekend. The No. 25 Ducks enter the rivalry series in the middle of their hottest streak in more than 10 years, featuring a potent offense and veteran talent up and down the lineup. Heres’s a primer on the series: Oregon State baseball weekend primer: Beavers visit Oregon Ducks for 3-game rivalry series WWW.OREGONLIVE.COM The Beavers and Ducks renew their rivalry with a three-game series that starts Thursday night. No. 25 Oregon baseball carries 10-game win streak into rivalry series with Oregon State Oregon enters its annual series with rival Oregon State riding a 10-game win streak, a far different and better position for the Ducks than when they met the Beavers last season. OSU swept all five meetings of the teams in 2022 and UO’s only lead in the season series came midway through the second inning in the fourth of those games. Since his arrival in the summer of 2019, Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski has made it a point that he wants to be the best team in the state and prove it on the field each year. In 2021 UO took five of six from OSU, including a sweep in Eugene. The roles were reversed last season, when the Beavers were ranked No. 2. “Playing the Beavers every year at PK is some of the most special games always,” Tanner Smith said. “The fans, the environment and that bad blood that’s within that rivalry.” No. 25 Oregon baseball carries 10-game win streak into rivalry series with Oregon State WWW.OREGONLIVE.COM The Ducks will need their bats to stay hot this weekend against Oregon State (18-10, 5-7), starting tonight (7 p.m., Pac-12...

Brandon Baker becomes latest 5-star to announce Oregon visit for Ducks spring game Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks continue to build what is becoming one of the most impressive recruiting visit lists we’ve ever seen in Eugene for the annual spring game at the end of April. The latest player to join the mix is 5-star offensive tackle Brandon Baker, a player who has been incredibly high on the Ducks over the past year. Baker is rated by 247Sports as the No. 23 player in the 2024 class, and No. 1 overall tackle. Baker is now the sixth 5-star player to schedule a visit for Oregon’s spring game, joining QB Dylan Raiola, S K.J. Bolden, EDGE Elijah Rushing, EDGE Collin Simmons, and S Xavier Filsaime. Oregon Leaves Another 'Great Impression' on WR Malachi Durant The Ducks could be surging with the top wide receiver out of Washington in 2024. Malachi Durant is a top target for Oregon in the 2024 class and the Graham (Wash.) Graham-Kapowsin wide receiver made a return trip to Oregon this week. "They left a great impression," Durant said of the trip. "They showed me a bunch of stuff I haven't seen before. I got to talk with Dan Lanning. That was a great experience." Lanning has been a hit with recruits since the day he was hired but this trip gave the 6-foot-1 wideout a chance to get closer with the Oregon head coach. "He's a great guy. I really got to get to know him a lot more this trip. I got to sit in the meetings, watch how he ran practice and watch how he sets up practice and all that." Read more about Malachi Durant's visit in Ducks Digest.
