Oregon baseball embracing new style of play from international players Rikuu Nishida, Sabin Ceballos This season, things might look a little different. Oregon not only has a stash of talented players, but it also welcomes different styles of play from other countries, which’ll inevitably shift things around in the lineup. The Ducks have two new faces from overseas on their team: Rikuu Nishida from Japan and Sabin Ceballos from Puerto Rico. Nishida is what many might describe as an “old school” baseball player. In the modern age, so much emphasis is placed on drawing walks and hitting home runs, with less focus on making contact and stealing bases. Oregon is certainly no exception, with power hitters like Anthony Hall, Kenyon Yovan and Gabe Matthews coming through the program. But Nishida brings a flavor to the top of the order that the Ducks were missing last year. Then there’s Ceballos, who plays just about anywhere on the field, including catcher. His versatility is admirable in itself, but he also brings a sense of elation and exhilaration to how he plays the game and celebrates his achievements. He’s a big guy at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, but he can still play a smooth left side of the infield. “I think the fans are really gonna like Rikuu. I think they’re gonna really like Sabin,” Wasikowski said. “We’ve got an interesting locker room this year. They’re coming from different parts of the world, and they play like it.” Click here to read this highly recommended article from the Daily Emerald. OUT OF MANY, ONE TEAM OF DUCKS When the World Baseball Classic begins in early March, rooting interests in the Oregon locker room will be split. No less than four countries represented in the World Baseball Classic also are represented on the UO roster, which opens its 2023 season by hosting Xavier in PK Park on Friday at 3 p.m. There are Ducks from the United States of course, and from Canada, and also from Puerto Rico and Japan. "Having that kind of diversity in the locker room, it's so cool," veteran UO outfielder Tanner Smith said. "Everybody obviously has a different background, and a different way they came about the game. But it's really cool." A review of Tulane’s 2022 season with Hampton as play caller It was immediately obvious when I turned on the film why Oregon head coach Lanning had Hampton on his list of candidates: Tulane ran a Tite front defense, the origin of the Mint front he brought from Georgia to Oregon; every other defensive coach was experienced with Tite or Mint systems when Lanning hired them last year. Hampton’s squad was highly effective in 2022, with the 28th ranked defense in fricken+ advanced statistics despite having only the 75th ranked roster in the 24/7 team talent composite - with one exception, the defensive two-deep was entirely composed of low-to-mid 3-stars. All 13 FBS games of Hampton’s Green Wave defense in 2022 was reviewed and charted, a remarkable turnaround after their previous 2-10 season in which they went 12-2, took the American Conference championship, and beat USC in the Cotton Bowl. SEEKING SEASON BESTS IN ARKANSAS The UO women are off to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend with eyes on improving their season best in the distance-medley relay at the Arkansas Qualifier. In addition to the DMR, the Women of Oregon, ranked fourth in this week's USTFCCCA poll, are scheduled to have individual entries at 800 meters and in the mile. Later on Friday's schedule in Fayetteville, Mia Moerck and Ella Nelson will take on the 800 meters. They carry season bests of 2:06.93 and 2:06.98, respectively. The trio of Maddy Elmore, Klaudia Kazimierska and Izzy Thornton-Bott are entered in the mile, the final individual event of Friday's schedule. Thornton-Bott and Kazimierska registered lifetime bests of 4:33.15 and 4:33.67, respectively, last weekend at the BU Valentine Invitational. Those times currently stand at 14th and 17th in the NCAA this season. At the end of the qualifying window, the top 16 declared athletes in each event and top 12 relays will advance to the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships (March 10-11) in Albuquerque, N.M. The Ducks own 10 top-10 national marks entering the weekend; full list below. What are Oregon's NCAA Tournament chances after a loss at Washington? The Ducks are back in Eugene Thursday morning after a tough and bad overtime loss to rival Washington Wednesday night. It was a game the Ducks really needed to win as their margin for error in getting into the NCAA Tournament is razor thin. After dropping the 72-71 overtime loss what was the damage done to Oregon's NCAA Tournament resume? The Ducks dropped just one spot in the NCAA NET Rankings, which could be viewed as a good sign for Oregon. The Ducks sit 49th overall. The negative is that the loss to Washington - currently ranked 122nd in the NET - is the worst loss on the Oregon resume to date. The loss to the Huskies is worse than December losses at home to Utah Valley (79) and UC Irvine (84) by a good amount. Ducks eye revenge in rematch of last month's heartbreaking loss to WSU Ahlise Hurst appeared to give the Ducks a thrilling come-from-behind win on Jan. 15. The Ducks had trailed Washington State by as much as six points in the final minute of regulation before the Oregon reserve put down a long three that gave the Ducks the edge as time expired. Yet, officials waved off the play due to a clock operator error. Five minutes of overtime later, and it was the Cougars leaving Matthew Knight Arena victorious and not the home Ducks. "It was definitely a hurt type of feeling," Oregon freshman guard Chance Gray said on Wednesday as the Ducks prepare for Friday's rematch with the Cougars. "You feel like you leave everything out there and that was a crazy game. Hopefully we can turn it around. There's a little bit of anger and a little bit of frustration all combined into one." Oregon Football Signee Spotlight: Safety Kodi DeCambra The Ducks signed a pair of high school safeties in the 2023 class and DeCambra has a ton of potential after playing ball at a national powerhouse. His fired-up energy matches his ability to get into the receiver's heads as it looked like they would look for Decambra first rather than the ball, causing a lot of incompletions. Just because he plays great, and is good in coverage doesn't mean he's afraid to make a hit. He excels at making open-field tackles, something new safeties coach Chris Hampton has noted is key for his group. Being one of two safety signees along with Tyler Turner, DeCambra plays more of the true safety position down the field, whereas Turner plays a more of that Nickel spot. Either way, both players are strong in coverage and and are more than capable of being imposing defensive backs at the next level. Click here to read about Kodi DeCambra in Ducks Digest.

Overtime Loss A Setback For Ducks Oregon's drive for a first-round Pac-12 Tournament bye and NCAA Tournament consideration took a hit Wednesday. Oregon couldn't hold a late lead in regulation and lost in overtime Wednesday at Washington, a setback as the Ducks fight to earn a first-round bye in the Pac-12 Tournament and stay on the NCAA Tournament bubble. The UO men led by as much as eight in the second half but needed a dunk from N'Faly Dante to force overtime, in which the Huskies scored last in a back-and-forth period to win 72-71. A win would have put the Ducks into the top four of the Pac-12 standings to open the week, and continued the team's recent scramble for NCAA Tournament consideration. Oregon suffers hearbreaking overtime defeat to Washington With perhaps their postseason hopes hanging in the balance, the Ducks dropped a tough, heart-breaking 72-71 loss to the Huskies in the lone meeting between the two schools. "We had a couple of chances late to knock them out and we committed some turnovers," said a disappointed Dana Altman on the school's postgame radio show. The Huskies scored four points in the final 80 seconds of the game, both coming at the rim. The Ducks missed seven of their 10 shots in overtime, including two of their final three in the final 50 seconds of the game. Oregon had the ball with 10 seconds to play and head coach Dana Altman opted to not call a timeout and allow Will Richardson to attack the rim, and his shot was blocked. "We just didn't get it done, didn't get it done," said Altman.
