  2. Kirk Herbstreit names Oregon among top performing teams with Week 2 win vs. Texas Tech On the wildly popular ESPN College GameDay show that leads into the early action on Saturday mornings in the fall, there was only one person who picked against the Oregon Ducks when making predictions for their Week 2 game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. It was analyst Kirk Herbstreit. So it makes sense that Herbstreit is making things right by announcing that Dan Lanning and the Ducks are one of his top-performing teams of the week following their thrilling 38-30 victory down in a hostile Lubbock environment. Each week of the season, Herbstreit goes out of his way to name which teams impressed him the most. It isn’t based on rankings or highlights, but rather on the quality of the win based on the situation. Here are Herbstreit’s rankings of top-performing teams for Week 2... 3. 8 teams from the Pac-12 land in ESPN's Week 2 Power Rankings Following the end of Week 2, the LBM Coaches Poll came out and put seven Pac-12 schools — USC, Washington, Utah, Oregon, Oregon State, Colorado, and UCLA — in the standings, while the Associated Press Top 25 added an eighth in there with Washington State. ESPN followed that lead, putting eight of the 12 schools out west in their most recent power rankings. 4. You'll never guess where George Kliavkoff was during Oregon State-Washington State Pac-12 legal hearing The judge at the hearing divulged a piece of information which — while not damning — is certainly not a good look for the Pac-12. The conference is winning a lot of football games, but it is losing a lot of battles with optics. Here’s the big revelation about George Kliavkoff, followed by more details plus reactions from fans and commentators... 5. Duck Tape: Film Review of Week 2, 2023 at Texas Tech In addition to the usual problem of sacks and scrambles on called passing plays being mixed in with designed quarterback run plays – all of which showed up in this game frequently – the official box score is even more misleading because several rushes that started with a lateral toss were classified by the scorekeeper as pass receptions. As always, the statistics in this article reflect the actual play design from charting the game film. 6. Where Oregon's offense ranks nationally in key stats following win vs. Texas Tech I think even fans of the Oregon Ducks would be willing to admit that the statistics after Week 1 for their favorite team were a bit skewed. The Ducks beat Portland State 81-7, putting up 729 yards of total offense and scoring 7 touchdowns. As you would expect, that ranked them near the top of the nation in almost every major statistical category when it comes to offensive production. So now that we have another game to work off of, the stats for Oregon are looking a bit more realistic. That doesn’t mean that the Ducks don’t still have one of the best offenses in the nation, but rather that Oregon fans can feel more validated by the numbers, knowing that they are averaged out by a game against a legitimate Power 5 team. So where do the Ducks rank now in the major offensive statistics going into Week 3? Let’s take a look... 7. Led by legendary QB Timmy Chang, Rainbow Warriors take on personality of head coach Football teams are known to take on the personality of their head coaches. Saturday's opponent will be no different, and if you know anything about Timmy Chang's playing career at Hawaii, you know what that means about this weekend's matchup. "Obviously, he was a phenomenal player. I think he's second overall all-time in passing yards, and that's the flavor they are right now. They air it out," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said at his weekly Monday evening press conference. "Him as a player and what they're doing, you see a lot of carryover." 10. Game Balls vs Texas Tech It wasn’t pretty but at the end of the day we’re still talking about an Oregon win. And that is the most important stat in the game of college football. The Ducks had to grit out a win over Texas Tech on Saturday. And while it wasn’t the blowout Oregon fans wanted, it was a win nonetheless. So now a 2-0 Oregon gets ready to host Hawaii and is two weeks out from hosting a potentially 3-0 Colorado as well. Before we get to either of those games however, let’s hand out game balls for Saturday’s performance... 11. Duck pass rush shows more teeth in win over Texas Tech Oregon's front gave Texas Tech trouble all evening on Saturday, recording five sacks along with the game-sealing hit of Tyler Shough to set up the Jeffrey Bassa's pick six. After failing to get home in the opening win over Portland State, Oregon's front altered the complexion in Lubbock throughout Saturday night. The Ducks finished with four total sacks and 15 additional pressures of Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shough. No pressure was bigger than Brandon Dorlus' in the final minute of regulation. The senior reached his former teammate, who'd rolled left, and made contact with his chest plate as the ball was coming out. The pass fell like a lame duck into Jeffrey Bassa's arms for an easy interception and even easier score. 12. NIX NAMED PAC-12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Quarterback Bo Nix has been named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Oregon's 38-30 comeback win at Texas Tech, the conference announced on Monday. Nix completed 32-of-44 passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns in Lubbock, and he led the Ducks with 46 rushing yards while converting on third down with his legs four times. Nix's 32 completions are tied for the seventh-most in UO single-game history, and he surpassed 300 passing yards for the eighth time in his career. Nix was especially efficient in the fourth quarter, going 8-for-9 for 68 yards while leading Oregon to a touchdown and a pair of field goals. The Ducks scored 20 fourth-quarter points to erase a 27-18 deficit and leave Lubbock with a victory. 13. Washington State, Oregon State granted temporary restraining order against Pac-12 A Washington State Superior Court judge granted Washington State and Oregon State a temporary restraining order and prohibited the Pac-12 Conference from holding a meeting Wednesday with all league members to chart the future course of the league. The two schools on Friday filed a breach of bylaws complaint in Whitman Country, Washington, against their current league and commissioner George Kliavkoff, attempting to keep the 10 departing member schools from meeting this week and from possessing votes that would decide the future direction of the league. Judge Gary Libey ordered all parties to “transact business in the normal course” but “put the brakes” on future Pac-12 board meetings. Libey amended the order to allow the Pac-12’s board to adopt a proposal that elicits a unanimous vote, such as an immediate retention plan. The ruling is important as the two Pacific Northwest schools continue to assess what control over the crumbled league’s assets they retain and how that may play in what decisions they make regarding future conference affiliation. 15. Is the Pac-12 the best conference in the nation? The rankings say so... Timing is everything. For years, the Pac-12 Conference has been considered one of the weaker Power 5 conference. But now, ironically, in its last season as a league, the Pac-12 has never been stronger. The Conference of Champions has been incredibly impressive so far this year and looks like it could once again live up to its name in 2023. By looking at the rankings following Week 2 of the season, it’s hard to argue against the idea that the Pac-12 could be the strongest conference in the nation. Almost all of the Pac-12’s early success in 2023 is due to superb quarterback play. Caleb Williams is the reigning Heisman winner and it doesn’t look like he’s ready to slow down any time soon. The usuals such as Michael Penix, Jr. and Bo Nix are also having nice starts, but it’s the quarterbacks such as Cameron Ward of Washington State and DJ Uiagalelei of Oregon State that provide depth for the conference. Things will change once the conference season gets in full swing, but having one last great Pac-12 season is definitely bitter-sweet. 17. Oregon Ducks vs. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors: Prediction, point spread, odds, best bet It wasn’t always pretty over the weekend, but the Oregon Ducks did what they were supposed to do and took care of business against the Texas Tech Red Raiders down in Lubbock over the weekend. Though the penalties were a big issue, and the Ducks have a long list of things to improve on going forward, Oregon is still standing strong with a 2-0 record and the No. 13 spot in the LBM Coaches Poll. Fortunately, the Ducks will get another opportunity to shore things up and work on improving some miscues against a lesser Hawaii Rainbow Warriors team this weekend. Oregon can work on the things they need to work on, get a likely easy win, and then move on to a brutal Pac-12 schedule going forward. 23. ESPN FPI: Oregon's struggles vs. Texas Tech cause win probability to drop across the board The Oregon Ducks accomplished what they needed to accomplish against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock over the weekend, coming back home with a victory. In the long run of the season, that’s all that will matter as we eventually will look back and forget about the miscues that led to Dan Lanning and his squad needing a nine-point comeback in the 4th quarter to win vs. an unranked team. For now, however, those memories are still fresh, and that means that current perception of the Ducks has dropped a bit in the national lens. After each week of the season, we like to look back at the ESPN FPI and see how the projections change based on the previous result. For the Ducks — who were favored to win all but one game coming going into Week 2 — expectations may have cooled off a bit. While the Ducks are still favored to win every game but one, their win probability has dropped quite a bit in most of the upcoming games, per ESPN. Despite the win probability drop, the Ducks’ likelihood of winning the national championship increased, likely due to losses elsewhere in the rankings. Take a look at the latest FPI predictions following Week 2... 24. Column: Is early-season scheduling partially to blame for Oregon's close call in Lubbock? Season openers are often tricky to get right in the world of college football. Teams across the nation take many different approaches every season. Some schedule cupcakes that provide a smooth on-ramp into the season, allowing them to knock off the rust. Others like to jump into the deep end, capturing early-season eyeballs with a top-10 matchup that will either catapult them to the top of the rankings or derail their season early on. The Oregon Ducks have tested both methods over the past decade or so. I’m not convinced either one is the correct strategy at this point. There are positives and negatives to both, in my eyes.
