  1. He is worried about being out bid and recruiting coaches will matter less than coaches that can coach.  He should be worried.  The whole point of compensation is so new employers can lure employees away from their current employer.  Artificially deflating employees wage through the corrupt use of a cartel is illegal. The only reason the NCAA was allowed to do it before was relabeling employees, “student athletes”

So Saban wants legislation to control NIL?  Is he really about "the integrity of the college game?"  Or is he worried about being out-bid by other schools?  (Like A&M)

The problem are the rules that limit colleges from acquiring players, or employees. The 85 limit is an issue. The real problem is that most "employees" as you say, won't end up in a better situation. Some won't even get a scholarship offer.

Yes, a few will do well, most won't. The rich will get richer and further the divide between the haves and have-nots.

Remember too, positions are specialized, and limited in number. How does a coach manage a team effectively when at any time player's can switch schools.

Personally, I don't like the portal or nil, but that's just me.

there always was have and have nots, it has always been pay for play for everyone in football except players, and restricting the movement of labor is unethical.  The term “student athletes” was specifically created to get around all labor laws.  Each and everyone of these employees can get their neck broke in the normal routine of their job and you don’t want them to be paid, own their own likeness, and not be able to move to another job if a employer mistreats them?

this is relevant klemm is coming and if he is as awful as the lawsuit makes him out to be, I want out players to be able to escape an abusive situation.

What happens when the "employer" of a "great QB" decides the QB isn't worth the $$$???

Example: say a wealthy booster decided to "hire" 5 star QB to come to Oregon with the promise of NIL millions. Mr. 5* shows up on campus and gets "hired" and starts making some serious money... But then, Mr. 5* doesn't beat out a grad transfer for the starting job. Say the coaches just give him very minimal playing time. How long does the wealthy booster continue to pay a great potential QB just to be in the room and be ready to come in if #1 QB gets hurt? Wealthy booster might think it is an investment for the future... next year Mr. 5* will be the starter. But what if the coaches bring in another QB through the portal... one with a couple years starting experience at a big name University from the SEC? What does wealthy booster think now?

What happens when the NIL opportunity to make a million bucks a year dries up after game 5??? Did anyone sign a one year contract? Maybe so since athletes can have agents.

    He gets fired

And....McClendon was fired at South Carolina as an OC; this is not a "Moorhead" kind of hire for Cristobal...

Perfect fit for each other! Could you imagine the game plan conversation

BMc: I have drawn up some passing routes for our next game

MC: We don’t do that here

    BMc: Don’t do what?
MC: Pass!  Now hit the recruiting trail!

The only problem I have with that is the SEC IS GEORGIA AND BAMA.

The rest of the conference isn't really that much better than the rest of the nation.  They hide this by ducking strong teams in the regular season.

Does anyone think A&M can handle Ohio State in September?  Oklahoma? Clemson?  I certainly don't.

Every year two or three SEC teams are a cut above, and they use the rankings of the rest to bolster their conference.  I've been complaining about this since USC trashed Auburn in 2002 and 2003.

For the most part, only five or six teams have what it takes each year to win the title.  We don't figure that out to mid November.  But I know this, the SEC is fraudulent.  Just a mirage.

The SEC isn't a standalone product.  ESecPN knows this.  Perhaps the Alliance will destroy the narrative the SEC is the premiere conference.  Perhaps not.

After the divorce from the other divisions, that would be their problem.  Every division champion would be in our playoff and the SEC can do whatever they want.

Nah, our new coaches were affiliated with him years ago.  Has there been any indication that he has been like this elsewhere prior to this?  It could just be a toxic situation at UH that is making him crack and lose his ability to be professional.  As someone else stated, has there been any allegation of similar issues with coaches getting hired on DL's staff?  If not, I think it's probably a unique situation based on circumstances within the UH program or possibly his personal life bubbling over into his work.

The issue is that there is a pattern of hiring coaches that come from toxic cultures and specifically the hiring of two that have allegations of abuse and mistreatment of players.  This is the type of thing that former players should have written a letter to the AD about and what Jonny C should have reported on.

Um, none of our coaches are named Graham. So, why be concerned? Only the analyst has an immediate connection, the rest have been elsewhere since ASU.

Is this story due to a slow news week?

C'mon. Let them screw up first before we get excited.

I see a pattern of hiring coaches that come from cultures that abuse players.  there is no honeymoon time period for that style of culture.  Questions should be asked it’s entirely appropriate and if any answers are “radical accountability” we all should worry.  Hopefully I am over reacting but by using past information I’m not.

Players are fleeing University of Hawaii as soon as the season ended with the number up to 14 players entering the portal due to accusations of mistreatment and verbal abuse by Head Coach Todd Graham.  It has become so bad that Graham's own son, Michael, is entering the portal!

Hawaii Football Exodus Continues as DB Michael Graham, Son of Coach Todd Graham, Enters Transfer Portal by David Cobb of CBS Sports

My FishDuck Friends, this is pretty signficant because the following new Oregon Coaches are connected to the Todd Graham, via Arizona State or Hawaii teams.

Dan Lanning Head Coach at Arizona State under Graham

Kenny Dillingham Offensive Coordinator, at Arizona State under Graham

Adrian Klemm new offensive line coach, played at Hawaii, although I do not know if it was during Graham's first HC round at Hawaii.

Joe Loring, new Special Teams Coach, was at Arizona State.

A' Lique Terry offensive analyst, is coming directly to Oregon from Hawaii.

    Anything to be concerned about?

Most our coaches either have a Graham or Mora connection.  This is not a good sign.

  9. I feel very little sympathy for the multimillionaires that can’t even hold up their end of the bargain.  That being said we shouldn’t be crass jerks about it.  I would shoot for honest with decorum.

Besides I know the least about football on this forum.  So when everything goes well I listen. When obvious issues are occurring and most people are still in “wait and see mode”, I speak up.  For example, MC’s offense or Danimals’ potentially problematic. So we should be able to be critical of our coaches and players.

However, if we allow a “gloves off” approach, it is likely the forum will devolve into twitterverse.  And who really wants that?

Furthermore, we should never attack a player.  We can be critical of their performance but never attack them.  They are at the mercy of the fans, coaches, and administration.  All they are trying to do make a better life for themselves and their family. So we should really cut them a break.

Lastly, we should be honest with decorum in this forum for us.  In a world where we see rudeness, personal attacks, and dishonesty on a daily basis, shouldn’t we have a sanctuary where we lead the in the discussion of football?

If we want gloves off… just go to Twitter, Facebook, or a remarks section on a sports web page.  They have that market space covered.

Haha! That would mean an even number of conferences producing an even number of champions, with entry to the CFP restricted to the conference champions only. ESPN/SEC would never go for that!

Maybe the other conferences need to forge a path without both the SEC and ESPN

  11. What’s the difference between an 4 SEC team playoff and a 12 teams SEC team playoff?

    about 8 teams.

you can’t have millions of dollars at stake with a subjective beauty pageant picking the contestants and have a satisfied consumer base.  Someone will alway be left out unjustly and the image of the playoffs will just deteriorate over time. The only way for the playoff to work is through an objective way to get in.

  12. Lanning is absolute upgrade from MC in X&O’s and we may be able to keep the recruiting just as high.

That being said Lanning hired multiple assistant coaches that contributed to Jim Mora’s toxic culture and one of them was named codefendant in a $15 million abuse case.

I see this playing out one of two ways:

    1. Lanning keeps a short leash on “problem coaches” and we go to the playoff within 3 years and possibly the national championship.

    2. Lanning either hired the coaches because of their “problematic past” or fails to “leash the problematic coaches” and the UO is in a $15 million lawsuit of their own and the program is a 4 win team the year after Lanning is fired

My trust is in Lanning, who has a plan. He has stated he has a little notebook where he has been making notes on how he wants to put this team of coaches together. We are seeing this in action now.

It isn't just a reaction, where someone is caught off guard, and now has to create a vision of what they want. Lanning has been planning this all along.

My bet is he also has a list of potential transfers he wants, and recruits he wants too.

All we can do now is wait and watch. We can wonder too, but until there is smoke, from a festering fire at the Oregon Football Program I will hold back my criticism. I just have optimism about the potential of the future, and each coach and athlete is part of that expectation, until proven otherwise.

If Lanning had Klemm in his little black book, fully knowing his background, that bothers me more than a panic hire. That the hire was part of Lannings vision all along.  That is a red flag.
