Early Enrollee Spring Rewind: Ashton Cozart Here is a breakdown of what Oregon true freshman Ashton Cozart showed during his first spring football camp. Today, we continue this series with wide receiver Ashton Cozart. Recruit Stats: 4-star prospect / 224th-rated overall prospect /32nd-rated wide receiver Height/Weight: 6-foot-3 / 195 pounds Outlook this fall: Cozart possesses all the skills to take the top off of a defense. He's tall and well-built with difficult to match top-end speed (he ran 10.74 in the 100 meters in high school). It's unlikely the Texas native shows much of that in 2023 though. Junior Adamsworked tirelessly to reshape the WR room this offseason. That meant adding big-time prep receivers like Cozart, but more importantly three top transfers. With Traeshon Holden, Gary Bryant and Tez Johnson now in the fold along with returning starters Troy Franklin and Kris Hutson, playing time will be hard to come by for the cohort of younger receivers. Ducks become heavy favorites to land 4-star Oregon legacy QB Akili Smith Jr. It isn’t hard to imagine seeing an Akili Smith play inside Autzen Stadium again down the road. After the great Akili led Oregon to so much success decades ago, it appears that the Ducks might be in line to land his son, 4-star QB Akili Smith Jr. Over the past week or so, a number of predictions have come in on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine for Smith to commit to Oregon. He is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 94 overall player in the class of 2025, and the No. 7 QB. Oregon offers scholarship to 4-star running back out of Maryland Another scholarship offer has gone out to a star running back based in Maryland. Oregon’s Attention Turns to Two Big-Time 2024 Recruits Oregon's 2023 roster added two important pieces on Monday, landing commitments from former East Carolina offensive lineman Nishad Strother and former Colorado cornerback Nikko Reed. Oregon lands its third transfer of the week as former Austin Peay P Matt Rigney commits to the Ducks. Rigney, a fifth-year redshirt junior, earned All-ASUN Conference honors last season. Rigney averaged 40.9 yards on 44 punts last season, with eight landing inside the 20, four for 50-plus yards with a long of 57. Of Rigney's 44 attempts, just two landed as touchbacks. In 2021, Rigney turned in another solid year, averaging 40.7 yards on 55 punts with 14 inside the 20, seven for 50-plus yards with a long of 60. Once again, Rigney's touchback numbers remained low, having just three. With Rigney's addition to the kicking room, Oregon now has three punters competing for the opening-day nod. Rigney joins a battle between Luke Dunne and Ross James. Both Rigney and Dunne are Australian natives, while James transferred in last year from East Central Community College. BREAKING: Ducks Land Commitment from Colorado CB Nikko Reed
NJDuck replied to NJDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
It it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Arguably the best defensive player for the Oregon Ducks in 2022 was cornerback Christian Gonzalez, a former Colorado Buffalo who followed coach Demetrice Martin from Boulder to Eugene. The Ducks are going back to the well and trying to see if lightning will strike twice. On Monday, former Colorado cornerback Nikko Reed announced that he would be committing to the Ducks, following Coach Meat to Oregon and looking to crack his way into the starting lineup under Dan Lanning. In two seasons with Colorado, Reed became a big contributor and put up some impressive stats: Colorado Buffaloes 2021: 6 Games 7 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 1 INT, 1 PBU 2022: 12 Games 42 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 1 sack, 2 INT, 7 PBU Reed will have no shortage of competition for playing time in Eugene. The Ducks also brought in former Alabama CB Khyree Jackson this offseason, and have holdovers on the roster like Trikweze Bridges, Dontae Manning, and Jahlil Florence all competing for the starting spots on defense. The addition of Reed currently puts the Ducks over the 85-man scholarship limit, but there are a lot of personnel moves left to be made before the season starts this fall. Oregon Football: BREAKING: Ducks land commitment from CB Nikko Reed DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Coach Demetrice Martin is bringing another Colorado CB to Eugene. Really solid addition for the Ducks. Ducks Land Transfer Commitment from ECU Offensive Guard Nishad Strother
NJDuck replied to NJDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
5 things to know about Nishad Strother, Oregon's newest OL transfer The transfer portal window is closed for the summer, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t still a major topic of conversation in the world of college football. While players can no longer opt into the portal unless they are a graduate transfer, anyone who is already looking for a new team is free to take visits and ultimately commit. That’s exactly what happened for the Oregon Ducks on Monday, with East Carolina Pirates’ offensive lineman Nishad Strother announcing that he would be transferring to Eugene and joining Dan Lanning, A’lique Terry, and the Ducks. Strother is a three-year player with two years of eligibility that has a load of experience starting for the Pirates. Looking to find out more about Strother? We’ve got you covered. Here’s our breakdown so you can get to know the newest Duck a little bit better. Oregon Football: 5 things to know about Ducks’ OL Nishad Strother DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Strother has ample experience starting at LG, but his path to starting at Oregon is going to be fraught with competition. -
The offensive line isn’t generally thought of as a major area of need for the Oregon Ducks this offseason, but as Dan Lanning has always said, if the opportunity arises for them to increase the talent level on the roster, then they will take it. It appears that they did just that, adding East Carolina transfer Nishad Strother to the roster. Strother announced his commitment on Monday and will take one of the two available scholarships that Lanning and Co. had to work with. Oregon Football: Ducks land transfer from ECU guard Nishod Strother DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM An experienced veteran is coming to Eugene. Early Enrollee Spring Rewind: Dante Dowdell Here is a breakdown of what Oregon true freshman Dante Dowdell showed during his first spring football camp. Today, we continue this series with running back Dante Dowdell. Recruit Stats: 4-star prospect / 134th-rated overall prospect /Sixth-rated running back Height/Weight: 6-foot-1.5 / 210 pounds Outlook this fall: The bigger bodied Dowdell stood out in the spring game with his physical running style. A 14-yard second half scamper acted as the day's longest run and saw the freshman plow over a few players and drag more for extra yardage. While Dowdell's rushing stats were fairly meager in total (seven carries for 32 yards), they acted as a game-high. The last time that Oregon Ducks coach Demetrice Martin went into Boulder and brought one of his former Colorado Buffalo players to Eugene, it worked out pretty well. Dan Lanning and the Ducks have to be hoping that they can see lightning strike twice, working hard to land a transfer from former Colorado cornerback Nikko Reed, who was in Eugene for a visit this past weekend. While Christian Gonzalez saw tremendous success after coming from Colorado to Oregon, there is a hope that Reed can do the same, if he does end up becoming a Duck. On Monday morning, 247Sports analyst Greg Biggens logged a Crystal Ball Prediction for Reed to commit to Oregon and follow Coach Meat to Eugene. We will see in the coming days if the Ducks are able to land him and add him to the roster. It should be known that at the current moment, Oregon is believed to have a pair of scholarships left to work with this offseason, though it’s unclear at the moment whether they have one or two.
