Cohen is currently serving on the CFB Playoff Committee. Before the move to SC, she still would have had to recuse herself from the discussion involving any Pac-12 team.

Did Dolt, er Folt, get it right this time? Maybe Jen wanted a change of scene regardless but I imagine that UW would not or could not match the SC salary.

Will Wazzu AD Pat Chun, rumored to be in the mix for the Ohio State job, be a candidate for the UW job?

Canzano: USC makes scary-good AD hire in Jennifer Cohen

Athletic director Jennifer Cohen likes to tell a story about attending University of Washington football games as a kid.

Her father would hold her hand and walk with her over Montlake Bridge. They’d stand for all four quarters at the Huskies game. Then, on the way home they’d talk and recap what they saw.

The following day, they’d watch “The Don James Show” on television to see what the UW football coach had to say about the game.

Cohen will be announced today as the athletic director at USC. It’s a terrific hire by the Trojans and a good career move for Cohen. I had her pegged to someday become the president of the NCAA and save college athletics.

Maybe she still will.

First, though, Cohen will do this USC thing.

Washington names Erin O'Connell interim AD after Jennifer Cohen's departure

Washington has named an interim athletics director in the hours following Jennifer Cohen’s departure, via an announcement from the university.

“I am pleased that Erin O’Connell, Deputy Athletics Director, will serve as interim AD,” the statement read. “The UW will be launching a national search for our next Director of Athletics and we look forward to this next phase in our storied athletics program.”

O’Connell previously served as the Huskies’ deputy athletics director and senior woman administrator. She has also served as the President and Chair of the U.S. Rowing Board of Directors from 2014 through 2016.

She is already a trusted member of Washington’s administrative efforts, as her job already saw her oversee nine of the Huskies’ varsity programs. Those include men’s and women’s golf, gymnastics, softball, volleyball, sand volleyball, women’s crew and men’s and women’s cross country/track.

O’Connell already has experience in the top role as well, as she served as the director of athletics at Seattle Pacific University from 2009-2015.

The statement also gave credit to former AD Jennifer Cohen, who was with the university for a quarter of a century. She is leaving UW to join USC in the same position.
