Game 2 Ducks @ Texas Tech: Pregame Articles, Interviews, Etc. (Sat, Sep 9, 4:00 PM PT, TV: FOX)

Recommended Posts

On game weeks, we will have a Pregame thread. Usually, these will start on Sunday/Monday as that is when the Pregame articles will start coming out.

Because advertising only appears on the first page and we want to earn as much money as possible for OBDF, this will be a continual thread. This means that older articles will be deleted as the page fills up.

After the game, I will start a Postgame thread.

Be sure to check in often to keep up with the news as we have some big games coming up.

'He's an NFL QB;' Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire talks Bo Nix, Dan Lanning, and the Ducks

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have a lot to prove this weekend when they host the No. 13 Oregon Ducks in Lubbock for their home opener.

Joey McGuire and his squad didn’t get off to the best start in Week 1, blowing a 17-point lead and losing to the Wyoming Cowboys in double-overtime.

Texas Tech had high expectations going into the season, being picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 this year.

Despite the season-opening loss, they still have those high expectations, and they hope to get things back on track this week with a statement win against an Oregon team that put 81 points on the board in the first week of the season.

On Monday, McGuire met with media members to preview the matchup, talk about his team, and go into detail on what it is about the Ducks that makes them such a team.

Here are some of the most notable quotes from his press conference when talking about Oregon...

5 Texas Tech players for Oregon fans to know ahead of Saturday's matchup

There’s an interesting set of expectations that are presenting themselves for Oregon Ducks fans as they head into Week 2 of the season against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Because of the results in Week 1 — a lopsided victory for Oregon against a bad team, and a disappointing double-overtime loss to an average team for Texas Tech — it’s hard to predict what we may see in Lubbock this weekend.

There’s a chance that the Red Raiders come out firing, knowing that they need to do anything they can in order to avoid an 0-2 start. There’s also a chance that the home team is completely outmatched by a really good Oregon team.

While it’s impossible to predict the outcome, we do know that there are a number of players on the Texas Tech roster that Duck fans need to pay attention to going into the game.

Whether it’s a solid QB or dangerous weapons on offense, or a pair of stout defensive linemen, the Red Raiders have a lot of highly talented players that can cause this game to change.

Here are a few names that fans need to know going into Saturday...

Dan Lanning details challenges that Texas Tech's offense and defense present

Since he was hired in early 2022, it’s been clear that Dan Lanning likes to keep most things close to the vest and out of the media. There is nothing wrong with that approach. There is a legitimate argument that everything a head coach has to say about football should be proprietary.

However, after the Saturday game against Portland State, Lanning shared more than he typically does about how he and the rest of the coaches are examining and approaching Texas Tech, offensively and defensively.

One thing Lanning mentions about Texas Tech’s offense is its quick pace.

Texas Tech Week Two: Shough It All Over the Field

Ask head coach Joey McGuire to dream up an opportunity to display “The Brand.” He would be hard-pressed to come up with a scenario better than the one in front of his team.

Wyoming humbled this Texas Tech team to open the season. A quick knee-jerk reaction would be to suggest that this team was highly overrated.

However, a Texas Tech week two showdown with a top-15 team is the exact scenario for “The Brand” to take center stage.

So what will it take for the Red Raiders to bounce back and spring a home upset?

Oregon Ducks Injury Report: Final look at player's status heading into Week 2 vs. Texas Tech

The Oregon Ducks’ Week 1 game against the Portland State Vikings brought about more questions than it did answers when it comes to the player availability front.

While there were some expected absences, like for Nishad Strother, Jestin Jacobs, and Casey Kelly, a handful of other players also sat out, be it for injury reasons or something else.

Fortunately, we were able to get a good idea of who is available and who is not by watching a couple of practices this week in Eugene.

Most of the players who missed Saturday’s game were back at practice this week, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be ready to play down in Lubbock against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Here is the full updated injury report based on intel gathered by Ducks Wire  through watching practice and talking with coaches this week...

Texas Tech defensive preview: While the Red Raiders lack depth, they have a few stars in the making

Earlier this week, I looked at the most important things to know about Texas Tech’s offense.

Today, it’s the defense’s turn. It feels safe to say that defense likely won’t be the strong suit of the Red Raiders this season.

They are much deeper and more talented on the offensive side of the ball, though they still have playmakers on the defensive side.

Texas Tech offensive preview: Tyler Shough looks to pass all over his former team

One of the biggest talking points of college football’s first week was the Wyoming Cowboys’ upset of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Texas Tech was heavily favored to beat the Cowboys, but as we saw, anything can happen early in the season as teams are still trying to find their identity.

Despite the loss, the Red Raiders’ quarterback Tyler Shough, who is a former Oregon Duck, played well. He threw for 338 yards, 3 TDs, with 1 INT.

Shough is nearing the end of his college career and it is unfortunate that so far he hasn’t had ample opportunity to demonstrate his QB ability due to injuries.

However, a small sample of games played does not mean Shough is not the real deal.

In Texas Tech’s final game of the 2023 season against Ole Miss, Shough threw for 242 yards and a TD while rushing for 111 yards and 2 TDs...

Oregon vs. Texas Tech: 'Tale of the Tape' for No. 13 Ducks vs. Red Raiders

In a sense, this Week 2 matchup for the Oregon Ducks against the Texas Tech Red Raiders feels like Week 1.

While the Ducks were able to knock the rust off and get some live action against a different team last week against Portland State, the matchup didn’t really provide many scenarios for us to learn a whole lot about the team.

Oregon won 81-7 in a game that could have had a 100-plus scoring differential if the Ducks wanted to make it so.

This week, though, the Ducks will face some tougher competition in Texas Tech. With Tyler Shough at quarterback, and a group of strong skill position players, Oregon’s defense will have a big task on their hands trying to slow down one of the fastest offenses in the nation.

Likewise, Bo Nix and the Ducks’ offense will try to pick apart a secondary filled with several veteran players who know what they’re doing.

So when you look at the tape and get into the numbers, which team is expected to have an advantage?

Let’s take a look, using numbers from last week to project ahead...

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

Oregon is less than a touchdown favorite heading into Lubbock this weekend. The numbers suggest it should be more than that.

7 major questions we have for the Ducks in Week 2 vs. Texas Tech

In a strange way, Oregon Duck fans are entering Week 2 of the 2023 college football season in a similar fashion to the way that they entered Week 2 of the 2022 season — with a lot of unanswered questions remaining about the team.

A  year ago, the Ducks played the defending national champion, and eventual two-time champion Georgia Bulldogs in Week 1, losing 49-3. It was a game so lopsided that it didn’t give an accurate representation of what this Oregon team could be.

The exact same thing can be said about the Ducks’ 2023 season-opener, where they beat the Portland State Vikings 81-7.

Did we really learn anything about Dan Lanning and his squad in Year 2?

If we did, it certainly wasn’t very substantial. That’s why, as we head into a Week 2 clash against the Texas Tech Red Raiders down in Lubbock, I still have a ton of questions about this team.

Whether it’s personnel, schematics, or simply production, there are several things that Oregon needs to show in this game among competitive teams.

Here are the main questions that I want to see answered...

Oregon embracing difficult road environment at Texas Tech

Oregon will head to its biggest non-conference game of the season with 60k+ fans and temperatures in the triple digits.

The West Texas heat is no joke. And Oregon is about to face it head-on starting Saturday, as the heat and 60k of their closest enemies bear down on them starting at 4 p.m. PST.

Lubbock, Texas, located about 70 miles from the New Mexico border, is about as far West as you can get in the state. The temperatures for this week have ranged between 97 fricken to 104 fricken. In other words, it's been hot. Really hot.

But, for Oregon, they catch a break. The game does not begin at high noon but rather in the late afternoon, when the temperatures will drop down into the 90s. Refreshing.

The turf will feel like the sun for most of the game, but the Ducks have been preparing for this. During the first three weeks of fall camp, Oregon practiced in the mid-afternoon in Eugene, where temperatures ranged into the 90s and occasionally eclipsed the 100-degree mark.

"I think having the heat up is good for us," said head coach Dan Lanning after the Ducks' first fall practice. "Early in the season we can train in harder environments or play games in the afternoon at night. So doing that early I think benefits us and then later on we get to our class schedule and transition back to morning."

Come Saturday, Oregon will see if that early camp workouts paid off in the long run.

Friday Forecast: Saturday Football staff picks for Week 2 CFB slate

No. 13 Oregon (-6.5) at Texas Tech

SD: I generally believe in what Joey McGuire is building in Lubbock, but this is a talent mismatch. I don’t think the Ducks will be intimidated by the hostile environment. This line is too short. PICK: Oregon

  • PH: I don’t know how you recover from losing to Wyoming (on the road) in Week 1, but facing Oregon doesn’t sound like a great recipe for success. Even if it’s close for a while, I’ll take Bo Nix putting this away late. PICK: Oregon
  •
  • DP: Oregon is the more talented team. Oregon has the better quarterback. Ducks by double digits. PICK: Oregon
  •
  • ES: Texas Tech lost to Wyoming (with all due respect to Laramie, Wyoming). I do not care that they are playing at home, Oregon might win this game by 3 touchdowns. PICK: Oregon

5 THINGS TO WATCH: TEXAS TECH

Oregon will play its first road game of the 2023 season Saturday when the Ducks play at Texas Tech.

The UO football team moved up two spots to No. 13 in this week's Associated Press top 25 poll after beating Portland State to open the season, 81-7. The Red Raiders are playing their home opener this week after opening the season with a double-overtime loss at Wyoming, 35-33.

Oregon leads the all-time series between the two, 2-0. The Ducks swept a home-and-home series in 1991 and 1992, winning the first game in

Lubbock and also the next season at Autzen Stadium; the programs are scheduled to meet again in Eugene on Sept. 7, 2024.

Week 2 college football picks, odds, lines, 2023 best bets from proven expert: This 3-leg parlay returns 6-1

Barrett Sallee has locked in his top three college football picks for the Week 2 college football schedule

One of Sallee's top Week 2 college football picks: He's backing No. 15 Oregon (-6.5) on the road against Texas Tech in a 7 p.m. ET matchup on Saturday. Oddsmakers are clearly expecting to see the rubber band effect in play here after Oregon defeated Portland State 81-7 while Texas Tech lost 35-33 in double overtime against Wyoming as 13.5 point favorites.

However, Sallee is looking at this perplexing line as an opportunity with Texas Tech clearly reeling on defense and Oregon's offense firing on all cylinders early. Oregon averaged 10.1 yards per play while piling up 729 yards of total offense and had four players score multiple touchdowns in its Week 1 win. Bo Nix went 23 for 27 for 287 yards and three touchdowns and looked like one of the most improved players in the country after transferring from Auburn to Oregon last year.

Meanwhile, the Texas Tech defense gave up 171 rushing yards to Wyoming and the offense struggled to take advantage of the fact that they outgained their opponents 431-320 and won the turnover battle 2-1. The Red Raiders will be tougher at home but Oregon will be looking to make a statement with a power-five road win as the Ducks look to earn their way back into the College Football Playoff for the first time since its inaugural season in 2014.

Oregon vs. Texas Tech: Updated point spread, predictions ahead of Week 2

Injury List:

On the Oregon side of things, the Ducks look to be pretty healthy coming into this game from what we can tell. While a lot of players missed the opener — Noah Whittington, Evan Williams, Mase Funa, Kris Hutson, Casey Kelly — it appears that there are only two at the moment that we feel comfortable ruling out:

  • LB Jestin Jacobs
  • OL Nishad Strother

For Texas Tech, a pair of defenders are expected to miss the game on Saturday, per head coach Joey McGuire:

  • LB Jacob Rodriguez
  • LB Isaac Smith

A weak front 7 for Texas Tech just got weaker. I'm pretty confident our offensive strategy will be to establish the run and then pass. It will wear down the TT defense in the heat and second half which is easy to do given our depth and what we saw against Wyoming.
