Usually, these will start on Sunday/Monday as that is when the Pregame articles will start coming out. Because advertising only appears on the first page and we want to earn as much money as possible for OBDF, this will be a continual thread. This means that older articles will be deleted as the page fills up. After the game, I will start a Postgame thread. Joey McGuire and his squad didn’t get off to the best start in Week 1, blowing a 17-point lead and losing to the Wyoming Cowboys in double-overtime. Texas Tech had high expectations going into the season, being picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 this year. Because of the results in Week 1 — a lopsided victory for Oregon against a bad team, and a disappointing double-overtime loss to an average team for Texas Tech — it’s hard to predict what we may see in Lubbock this weekend. There’s a chance that the Red Raiders come out firing, knowing that they need to do anything they can in order to avoid an 0-2 start. There is nothing wrong with that approach. There is a legitimate argument that everything a head coach has to say about football should be proprietary. While there were some expected absences, like for Nishad Strother, Jestin Jacobs, and Casey Kelly, a handful of other players also sat out, be it for injury reasons or something else. Texas Tech was heavily favored to beat the Cowboys, but as we saw, anything can happen early in the season as teams are still trying to find their identity. Despite the loss, the Red Raiders’ quarterback Tyler Shough, who is a former Oregon Duck, played well. He threw for 338 yards, 3 TDs, with 1 INT. Shough is nearing the end of his college career and it is unfortunate that so far he hasn’t had ample opportunity to demonstrate his QB ability due to injuries. However, a small sample of games played does not mean Shough is not the real deal. In Texas Tech’s final game of the 2023 season against Ole Miss, Shough threw for 242 yards and a TD while rushing for 111 yards and 2 TDs... While the Ducks were able to knock the rust off and get some live action against a different team last week against Portland State, the matchup didn’t really provide many scenarios for us to learn a whole lot about the team. Oregon won 81-7 in a game that could have had a 100-plus scoring differential if the Ducks wanted to make it so. This week, though, the Ducks will face some tougher competition in Texas Tech. With Tyler Shough at quarterback, and a group of strong skill position players, Oregon’s defense will have a big task on their hands trying to slow down one of the fastest offenses in the nation. Likewise, Bo Nix and the Ducks’ offense will try to pick apart a secondary filled with several veteran players who know what they’re doing. So when you look at the tape and get into the numbers, which team is expected to have an advantage? Let’s take a look, using numbers from last week to project ahead... A year ago, the Ducks played the defending national champion, and eventual two-time champion Georgia Bulldogs in Week 1, losing 49-3. It was a game so lopsided that it didn’t give an accurate representation of what this Oregon team could be. The exact same thing can be said about the Ducks’ 2023 season-opener, where they beat the Portland State Vikings 81-7. Did we really learn anything about Dan Lanning and his squad in Year 2? If we did, it certainly wasn’t very substantial. That’s why, as we head into a Week 2 clash against the Texas Tech Red Raiders down in Lubbock, I still have a ton of questions about this team. The West Texas heat is no joke. And Oregon is about to face it head-on starting Saturday, as the heat and 60k of their closest enemies bear down on them starting at 4 p.m. PST. Lubbock, Texas, located about 70 miles from the New Mexico border, is about as far West as you can get in the state. The temperatures for this week have ranged between 97 fricken to 104 fricken. In other words, it's been hot. Really hot. But, for Oregon, they catch a break. The game does not begin at high noon but rather in the late afternoon, when the temperatures will drop down into the 90s. Refreshing. The turf will feel like the sun for most of the game, but the Ducks have been preparing for this. During the first three weeks of fall camp, Oregon practiced in the mid-afternoon in Eugene, where temperatures ranged into the 90s and occasionally eclipsed the 100-degree mark. "I think having the heat up is good for us," said head coach Dan Lanning after the Ducks' first fall practice. "Early in the season we can train in harder environments or play games in the afternoon at night. So doing that early I think benefits us and then later on we get to our class schedule and transition back to morning." Come Saturday, Oregon will see if that early camp workouts paid off in the long run. I don’t think the Ducks will be intimidated by the hostile environment. This line is too short. PICK: Oregon PH: I don’t know how you recover from losing to Wyoming (on the road) in Week 1, but facing Oregon doesn’t sound like a great recipe for success. Meanwhile, the Texas Tech defense gave up 171 rushing yards to Wyoming and the offense struggled to take advantage of the fact that they outgained their opponents 431-320 and won the turnover battle 2-1. Solar No. 39 Share Posted September 9, 2023 A weak front 7 for Texas Tech just got weaker. I'm pretty confident our offensive strategy will be to establish the run and then pass.
