Where Oregon Football Stands in 2024 Transfer Portal Rankings After Woodyard, Harmon Commitments

Recommended Posts

We knew that the Oregon Ducks were unlikely to do a whole lot in the transfer portal this spring unless it resulted in bringing in players who have a chance to contribute immediately and bolster the talent of the roster.

It appears that Dan Lanning found the guys he was looking for.

With the additions of Derrick Harmon and Peyton Woodyard, the Ducks’ 2024 transfer class is quickly climbing.

Saw a number of favorable posts today about the Woodward pickup on the Talk'N Dawgs site. Woodward had at one time early been a Georgia commit who bailed when the DB room became too crowded in Athens for his taste. Most of the commenters thought this to be good pickup for Lanning and Co.

The one reservation a couple of the coaches on the board had about Woodyard was his 4.8 speed in the 40. But another guy pointed out that this time by a 17-year-old likely improves after a year or two of strength and conditioning. He also noted that Woodyard's cousin Kyle Hamilton was also running 4.8s in high school and went on to become a consensus All American at Notre Dame and first-round NFL draftee, so obviously a 4.8 40 time at this juncture foretells absolutely nothing in itself.

I found this information about Woodyard interesting and thought I'd pass it along.

Great info, thanks.  Those comments seem to be consistent with part of the scouting profile that Greg Biggins wrote for Woodyard. Here is part of what he wrote...

"He’s a not a freaky athlete and will need to continue to improve his overall quickness and athleticism but his smarts and ability to play in all situations should allow him to see the field early in college."

I posted this video on Ducks podcast.  Good information on Woodyard.  They also show video play of woodyard in action.   He was thought after by both Georgia and Alabama.

Where Derrick Harmon, Peyton Woodyard stands among the top-rated transfers in Dan Lanning era

The spring transfer portal window has now closed in the world of college football, and with another year of portalling under his belt, it’s beyond clear that Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning is among the most proficient utilizes of the transfer portal in the nation at the moment

So where do Harmon and Woodyard rank among the 34 (non-specialist) Oregon transfers in the Lanning era? There are two ways to look at it. For starters, you can take into account the 247Sports transfer portal rankings. However, those rankings don’t always match what we see play out on the field. For instance, Bo Nix was a three-star prospect in the portal, but he finished his college career as a Heisman Trophy finalist in New York.

Let’s take a look at the 25 best transfers that the Ducks have landed since Lanning has been here, and see where the newest additions land:

And remember they only count Gabriel for pennies on the dollar because he only has one year left. He was the biggest contributor available in the portal, period.

This is some big time recruiting.

And I have a doozy of an article coming out tomorrow just about Lanning's recruiting ability so far.

So take a look on the main site for that to drop tomorrow morning.

Yes... I am shamelessly self promoting here.

For the record in light of my earlier comment, I fully anticipate Woodyard to become a strong contributor for the Ducks.

It's OK to have a different opinion; if he runs a 4.80 as you say--then he won't be playing, and it will sort itself out soon enough.  We have a lot of safeties in the room, thus by comparison--his speed will be revealed early on.

Straight line speed is for more important for CBs and Stars than for safeties. There are several safeties in the NFL who run 4.7-4.8 but have the instincts and ball skills to make up for it. Plus, I suspect that after a year of strength and conditioning Woodyard will be running in the mid to low 4.6s. I trust Georgia's and Saban's Alabama evals of Woodyard and will stand on my earlier comment. I think you'll be glad you have him.
