Idaho Test: Is Oregon’s Positional Depth for Real?

Recommended Posts

With all that has happened, it is hard to believe that Dan Lanning has only been at Oregon for two years. Yet the talent stacked up from both high school and portal recruiting has been the most impressive to me in all my time of covering Duck football. I had to take some time away from my fun at ducky ...

Thanks Charles. Great review just one day before kick off. That nose tackle line up you list is astonishing. GO DUCKS!

OK, I'm showing my age but I remember when Ohio State Nose Guard Jim Stillwagon at 240 pounds was 'Mammoth.'

My buddy John Sande played Center for Stanford at 220 pounds and beat up Stillwagon in Stanford's, and Heisman-winning QB Jim Plunkett's upset Rose Bowl win over the Buckeyes.

That Rose Bowl game was played 55 years ago. Will 2080 see 500-pound players who can move?

DL says if you are good enough you are old enough.

The depth on defense creates flexibility where our coaches can substitute to keep players fresh, but also bring in defensive personnel packages based on the situation.

We have unprecedented size on both lines, and players that have speed on both sides of the ball. Couple that with an experienced QB who is known to run, top notch skill players, and OBD create match up headaches for opposing coaching staffs.

I think our offensive firepower, and stingy defense, allows a lot of young players to get reps this year.

Getting a quick sizable lead with that offensive firepower will allow reps to reserves and build that depth.

So much great talent that has been recruited on defense are underclassmen, and this is a crucial year for them to get playing time and be ready for 2025.

The grind of the new conference schedule will place a premium on playing those reserves. And certainly on defense, the talent appears to be there!
