Puddles’ Playoff “Flight Plan” in Week Four

Recommended Posts

Thank you, Ducks, for not laying a road egg versus the Pac-6 before my first take on Puddles’s Playoff Flight Plan… Here’s a look back at the College Football (CFB) week that offered a look ahead to Oregon’s championship hopes, and the next games that impact the College Football Playoff Picture. I will not be dissecting the Ducks prior week’s ...

Jon than you for your thoughts to ponder.

4 weekend from now we will have a much better picture of how the CFP is taking shape.

At this point the rankings are highly tilted toward the SEC. The BIG did themselves no favor by having the CFP world watch Michigan amd Wisconsin get destroyed by Texas and Bama. Yes SC did beat a mediocre LSU.

Coming up soon Bama vs Georgia, the Vols vs Sooners and Texas Georgia. The picture should get clearer.

It is important that OBD's boat race their first 2 BIG opponents. The Ducks cannot afford to fall any further in the rankings Going to be tough to climb over a few one loss Sec teams.

A victory over tOSU will vsult the Ducks up into the TOP 5 and give some breathing room. A loss will knock Ducks out of TOP 10.

Maybe i am off base but a 10-2 Duck team will have a number of 10-2 teams to compete against come selection day.

Perception and bias msy play a big role in esrly December....

I'm hoping that LSU will defeat at least one of Bama, Ole Miss in Baton Rogue. That Oklahoma upsets Tennessee in Norman Saturday, Texas in Dallas, and then wins one of its last two games, Alabama in Norman and LSU in Baton Rogue.

Keep in range of Ohio State, take the game into the 4th quarter and I don't believe the Ducks will be severely punished by the Committee. The 1st Committee ranking will be released on November 5th. We'll get our 1st look at how closely the Committee follows the Coaches and AP Polls.

TN, Bama, Mizzou, and UGA, have wins over P4 opponents. Ole Miss beat Wake Forest. Boise is ranked 27th, Wake is nowhere to be found. And Miami's signature win was over a bad Florida team. We'll see if the adoration the SEC is also the way of the Committee.

Yes. Both of LSU's wins are more impressive than the U's. The Trojans have faced tougher competition, and even without playing Oregon or Ohio State this season, have a tougher schedule than Miami's. Clemson rode to the top of the old format on ACC's schedule and Miami is going to do the same.

Stale Cupcakes are still available. But No. 11 USC at No. 18 Michigan, No. 24 Illinois at No. 22 Nebraska (Friday), UCLA at No. 16 LSU, 3-0 Michigan State at 2-1 Boston College, 3-0 Rutgers at  2-1 VA Tech, and 2-1 Iowa at 2-1 Minnesota are Week 4 big B1G games featuring a game in the Big House.

APNEWS.COM

The game of the week in college football matches No. 11 Southern California against No. 18 Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

I kind of, sort of, "GET" the 16-team SEC playing eight conference games. The 18-team B1G plays nine conference games.

However, the 17-team ACC playing eight conference games, especially with Clemson no longer playing like PO Champ Clemson, is indefensible.

Ranked opponents Miami has played - ZIP. Ranked opponents Miami has remaining on its schedule - No. 19 Louisville, QB'd by friend Tyler Shough.

Will Miami's ACC Champ Game opponent, if the U doesn't fold up, be ranked in the Committee's top 15, top 20, or top 25? And ACC champ Miami would be the 3rd or 4th seed with a 1st round bye. $CAM brought to you by Canes QB Cam. 😁

Fortunately the selection committee picks 12 this year. I have a feeling the teams with depth and momentum at the end of the season will be the real threats.

It might come down to is Dante or Austin able to get us a win? Win the BIG championship game, or hold our own and things just might be interesting.

There is so much football ahead of us and so many questions unanswered, actually so many questions we don't even know!

I have a feeling some of these teams are going to be saying......

It's a B1G/SEC AP Poll. How about a College Football B1G/SEC 'World Series?'

APNEWS.COM

The Southeastern Conference and Big Ten occupy 64% of this week’s AP Top 25, with 16 ranked tream combined, the most ever by two conferences in one poll.

Thanks, Hayward. As I bet you know, the Committee picks 7 at-large teams. It's counterintuitive from any sensible PO format but it is what we are stuck with in 2024 and 2025.

Four of the five top-ranked conference champs have to be seeded 1-4 no matter where they may be ranked by the Committee.  The highest-ranked G5 champ is guaranteed a spot. Five PO spots, but not the seeding, will be determined by conference champ games. Again, no attempt to lecture here, 'this' is confusing. 😒

On December 8, 2024, the PO seeding in all probability will not match the Committee's final ranking of the top 25. In all probability, a higher-ranked team or two will be benched in favor of a lower-ranked team.

Of course, the Committee and ESPN could try to fudge things by simply releasing the Playoff field and seeding on December 8th. But ESPN's insistence on interim Committee poll$ being made public will not allow the Committee to escape almost certain backlash from teams passed over because of a screwed-up Playoff format.

I expect more blowback come December 8th than when TCU/Baylor was passed over and last season when undefeated FSU was left out.

Blame it on Playoff architect Greg Sankey. 😍

"Chip Kelly experiences this condition every time he sees the Ducks rolling on teams like Oregon State without his guidance."

Here's a piece of trivia for everyone...Since 2000, the Beavers have lost 9 home games and 8 road games by 35 pts or more.  None of those losses were to a team coached by Chip - Ducks or Bruins.  (Biggest Chip win 28 pts)

Four of the 17 (35pt) were to Oregon:  1 each Bellotti, Taggart, Cristobal, Lanning

All of these are possible. Likely? No. but, LSU was there at the end against USC. Brian Kelly could actually say what Bray did after their game against Oregon. Sooners pulling off any of those wins stretches credulity, but we'll find out something on Saturday.

Oregon playing it close to Ohio State will show more about them than Miami has shown this season so far.

Nice Preview Jon!

I agree, that Miami's win in Gainesville is overrated ( A&M revealed how hollow UF is, and ND blew up A&M's playoff hopes).

There will have to be some upsets, as the SEC could sneak in FIVE teams if they win the games they're supposed to.

Clemson beats Miami IMHO, but depending on what happens in the B1G, Miami could notch a playoff berth.

Oregon AND Penn State have to go 11-1 to assure themselves a spot.  USC has to beat Michigan and/or Penn State to nab a berth ( they should beat ND, but who knows).

North Carolina was in good shape till they lost QB Johnson.

The SEC is very deep.  I suspect there will be controversy on who plays in Atlanta for their crown.  Four of them have a real shot at going 11-1.  That 10-2 team will have an argument for playoff inclusion, as this conference is truly deep.

It looks like the regular season still matters.  I didn't see that coming.

For the good of the game, I actually hope the P2 offer that 14 team playoff with two guaranteed spots to the ACC and the Big 12 ( and no G5 for unless they defeat a ranked team or two).

That format, as ugly as it seemed when it was offered, just might be the only difference between CFB and the NFL ( especially if the P2 are stupid enough to go their own way).

This is actually going to be a thrilling year!
