Charles Fischer Administrator No. 1 Share Posted September 30 I was reading Canzano, who referred to the remaining Washington State schedule as "winnable," meaning that they play Oregon State, Boise State, and the rest of their Mountain West opponents. He felt that they could end up 10-2, or 9-3 at the least. You know, it is pretty damn hard to win 10 games in a Power-4 conference, and yet they could have those bragging rights, Mountain West or not. I recall that the Cougars have made big cuts to their athletic program, but Oregon State announced that they plan to fund their athletic department like a Power-4 program. I am not sure how that happens with the upcoming media contract, of which will be dramatically less than before, but I digress. If Beavis did have full NIL, and a real shot at ten wins every year? They could live in a happy-happy mid-lin zone, where they do a lot more winning, and yet can attract players with NIL. Looking at their schedule, they have Boise State, and WSU left, and among the others....it really says something when Cal is perhaps the most formidable foe besides? Damn...they won't have much media exposure, but I'll be their fans would love all the winning. If Beavis wins a game in the forest...does anyone hear it? I wonder if they regret scheduling Oregon yet? That is such a cool photo! Mr. FishDuck

JabbaNoBargain No. 4 Share Posted September 30 (edited) Trick question. My answer is yes, it’s ideal if they intended to become a G6. That being said, they will not stay on top of any G6 conference. The same factors that made them slide into the worst winning percentage in the history of the PAC did not go away. The were superior to the teams they’re looking to join up with now, but that was because they rode on the coattails of relevant programs that propped them up for decades. I think they’ll be the same old Beavis but at a lower level. On average they’ll be 5-7, and once every 10 years they’ll pop off a 10-2. David Marsh No. 5 Share Posted October 1 I actually think that once the shock and initial dispair of not being in a power conference wears off I do think OSU will be happier. It was originally one of the departing lines in my recent article. I cut it because it didn't fit... But I do believe the Beavs and their fans will be happier being at the top of a conference. After all it's more fun being the big fish... Even if it's a smaller pond. It's also why I highly doubt North Dakota will leave the FCS for the FBS. Is the Civil War Rivalry Dead? | FishDuck FISHDUCK.COM A rivalry is a special thing in any sport. They are a mixture of love and hate: love for one’s team and loathing for... As to do the Beavers regret scheduling Oregon? Absolutely they do. This may be their worst loss of the season. I think they'll probably lose to Boise State but it probably won't be as bad as their loss to the Ducks.
DanLduck No. 6 Share Posted October 1 Let's admit the hard honest truth: OSU has always been a G5 team. Along with WSU. I always have believed that if BSU and WSU or OSU exchanged conferences, WSU(OSU) would play in a bowl every year and BSU wouldn't. So making the Pac12 a G5 conference, makes OSU and WSU top of the league, as long as their recruiting stays at a Pac12 level. That's not likely. I believe BSU will rise to the top. So yeah, OSU is in a "good" place, for a G5 team. Good for them. 1 1

The reality is that they are really highly variable middling Power team. On their bad years they are at the bottom of the conference. In their good years they are coming in at 3rd or 4th. They don't compete for the top of a power conference. In a G6 conference they'll sit at the upper end. The past few years both OSU and WSU have been in the upper middle of the Pac-12. If they were in the Pac-12 this year I think the Beavs would be upper middle and the Cougs lower middle. This year there are some real stinkers of former Pac-12 teams. But so much of OSU and WSU's yearly prospects are out of their control. This year the Civil War was noncompetitive because they played a mostly healthy Oregon team. If they played a badly injured Oregon team then they would stand a chance. But they have no say in how dinged up the Ducks are going into the game. The Cougs played a Washington team completely void of talent after last year's team left. Granted they played last year's team darn close in the Apple Cup as well. If both were in the B1G they would be lower middle to middle yearly. They wouldn't crack to top echelon of the conference but they'd cause problems for many. I mean the Beavers did beat the bottom of the B1G in Purdue this year and if they played UCLA I'd bet they'd beat them too. I do think they'll have a whole lot more fun in the G6 than they do in the Power conferences though.

The only sport where they are competitive to the point where it doesn't matter how healthy the Power Conference opponent is, is baseball. For pretty much the same time, Oregon State has been better at baseball than Gonzaga has been at basketball. Unfortunately for Oregon state, while "there's no crying in baseball", there's no $$ in it either. 1

Which would give them probably like a C- for football... But maybe a C+ for basketball. 1
