Mens Basketball Stumble, But Rally to Win in OT Over Portland, 80-70

Recommended Posts

This was a surprisingly poor showing, but after being down 13 in the second half, they decided they wanted the win and played tough at the end.

"We're lucky, we're very fortunate," UO coach Dana Altman said. "… Believe me I'm so happy we won the game, because I would be unbelievably miserable. Now I'm just miserable."

Oregon didn't play well most of the night Tuesday, but the Ducks finished strong to beat Portland in overtime.

Yesterday, I got the distinct privelege of attending the UO men's basketball practice (so did Luke Jackson).  I don't want to disclose too much, but the team looks like it has pieces to be very competitive in the B1G this year.  One name to look for is Supreme Court.  He will be a beast in the paint.

Cool!  He has been injured, so we have only heard about him as yet.  We need him!

On the B1G Network at 8:00 PM PST.  This team is going to make noise this year!

Nate Bittle has more bulk, and is moving well!

Yes, and Evans is definitely heftier.

Evans looks fantastic so far this year.  He is going to be a difference maker .  Glad we were able to hang on to him.

Looks like the freshmen grew up a lot both physically and mentally.

Not loving the effort on D but it looks like these guy are going to need some games under their belt to gel.

Not impressed.  What is Biddle supposed to be?   This is rough. 3:00 left in first half and down by 9

I'm not seeing any power down low and don't know where that is going to come from. Not loving the jacking up 3s with out better ball movement.

This didn’t age well. Rough night for Evans

The Ducks are shooting 4-19 from 3. They really need to drive the ball if there that cold from outside.

I don't say this lightly at my advanced age, lol, but I can shoot better than this!

4-25 from 3 the next guy who takes a 3 should ride the pine for the rest of the game.

Hard to believe Portland lost to UC Santa Barbara by 39 points. Strange game.

Barthelemy coming up big! He was looking good before he got hurt last year. Someone needs to step up and he's answering the call

Well that was a nice turnaround. Happy to see it...didn't want any bad vibes traveling to Madison with OBD.

That was an ugly game but I like how they stuck with it and rallied for the win.

Well.......in the end they all count as a win.  Have to have better shot selection, too many threes when they weren't falling.  They kept fighting, they showed some intensity on defense.  I actually like the makeup of this team.

Tracey follows in the tradition of guys like Elgin Cook, Kazemi, Ennis, Omoruyi, undersized but absolute gamers who fight for everything.  Quickly becoming one of my favorite guys of the last few years.

I think we'll be pretty good despite this game.  You can tell we have the type of roster that works for how Altman wants to play.  We have two ball handlers, Bamba had a poor night but he's a proven shooter and defender.  Moss looks like he can really D it up and while he isn't a great shooter he can provide strength and some ability to drive the basketball.  Angel will provide shooting as a stretch 4.

This is probably our deepest team in a long while if we can stay healthy.

The guy that I really worry about is Evans, he just disappears for entire games, he has talent, but I don't think he has one skill that is truly deserving of a 5 star rating.  He doesn't shoot well, he isn't a monster on the boards, he doesn't drive the basketball that well, he isn't dominate as a defender.  He's athletic, but it's not like he's a freak.  We need him to take the next step, and I don't know if he has it in him.  One point is pathetic against a team like Portland.

Finally with Shelsted, I'm not sure where he goes this season, he needs to improve as a true point, he's more a scorer right now, at least we have a decent backup in Barthelemey who absolutely save Oregon's bacon tonight.

Seems like every year Oregon has some terrible Quad 4 loss in November or early December that impacts the bubble.  Glad they escaped this one with a win.

Dana is really consistent with his postgame remarks, "We've got a lot of work to do". This time he added, Embarrassing effort. so many missed switches on defense, early shots..."  This was definitely a game that OBD could have lost. They definitely didn't look like they were in control until OT.

Portland, outplayed, outhustled them all night, and it was fortunate that the Pilot at the free throw line at the end of the game was the player who hadn't attempted a free throw this season.  End of the night, it was a W. But they've got a lot of work to do.

The refs where calling the game tight last night and Evans picked up some pretty ticky tacky fouls that slow him down and kept him on the bench. I agree he doesn't quite have the power of a elite 4 man and seems to get tangled up in crowds but so did Angel last night.

Shelstad shots 5 for 19 and can be really hot and cold. I would like to see him drive and dish the ball more as he can attract a lot of attention and get overwhelmed at the rim.

This team is interesting, lots of pieces with a noticeable lack of big guys down low but better overall size. It's all about how well they gel and play team ball not much of that last night till the end of the game.

It is surprising that with all this experience...that we don't have a leader who pushes everybody to give maximum effort all the time.

Perhaps that will emerge...

Stupid factoid of the day-On November 19th 2010 the Oregon Football team and men's basketball team were a combined 13-0.  After last nights basketball game they are combined 13-0.  How far do you think they can go until

they get their first loss?  I feel at least 16-0 till the basketball team meets a good A&M Team, but its at home so maybe....

I wonder which schools teams went the farthest with out a loss?   Just something to ponder...

Hopefully they are just following the football script this year . . . tamper expectations in the non-conference schedule and then take names.
