I think Knowles just got offered another contract extension from osu2, no word on whether he's accepted it or not though.  Penn St is also making a big push for him as well.  Losing him would be a pretty big blow for Ryan Day but if he's going to then it might as well be to Oklahoma in a different conference rather than to one of your rivals.

Supposedly Knowles is locked  in BUT there are rumors Chip is interested in the OC job at Tampa Bay.

Remember Chips first daliances with the NFL was with Tampa Bay

So he goes to a bitter B1G rival to stick-it to them?  Working with Penn State defensive personnel?  Two observations....PSU is going to be very tough this fall, and...there must be QUITE a backstory to this departure.

A coach doesn't go to a rival for the same position if he is completely happy...

Well he's a Philadelphia native so "going home" makes some sense. Also being paid more than 3 million a year certainly helps.

Not necessarily...Knowles will be starting from scratch implementing his defense.  Oregon goes to Penn St in just the 5th week of the season so there's a good chance that their defense will still be in an uneven state while everyone's figuring it out.

Wow! Penn State DC Tom Allen to Clemson. Minnesota DC Corey Heatherman to Miami. Ohio State DC Jim Knowles to Penn State. I wonder how Tpm Allen feels leaving PSU for more $ and Knowles getting $3M?

Knowles will have plenty of talent on the D-side of the ball at Penn State.

Interesting that Ohio State came with large to keep draft-eligible juniors on board and bring in key additions but did not step up to match the PCU offer.

Meanwhile, TOSH?

The top of the Wish List to replace Knowles at "Eleven Warriors" is Iowa DC, Phil Parker or Pete Kwiatowski at Texas.

With Miami signing a Wisconsin player with an NIL agreement and not in the portal are there any restrictions? The portal opens for a change in HC but not in the case of position coaches. But I imagine position coaches might encourage 'their guys' to enter the portal in the spring and follow along.

All of this 'stuff' further monetizes the game and will lead to a Super Conference. With the B1G and the SEC making nice and Fox and ESPN teaming up on the o-date anti-trust challenged Venu, consolidation could happen before the early 2030s.

How many teams outside of the Power 2 are 'must have?'

Besides Kwiatowski (58), the two current secondary coaches at tOSU are considered candidates.   Parker is 61, has been at Iowa since 1999, less likely.  Kwiatowski at Texas since 2021 after stints at Boise State and Washington.

Rumor is Knowles wanted D Line coach Larry Johnson fired. Johnson is a well respected former Penn State coach that Urban Meyer poached a decade ago. Evidently Day said no and the rift was created. Knowles didn't even attend the celebration of their title and it was said several players felt let down by Knowles.

I find this to be hard to believe if the rumors of Ohio State matching at 2.7 just last night. My thought is Knowles is kind of a transient guy that likes new places and challenges. He's a Philly guy and when Penn State came with 3 million he didn't want to keep playing financial ping pong and he just accepted it.

I would've played financial ping pong as long as it went on. Maybe could've got Jeremiah Smith type money.

And if Chip jumps to the NFL Day might promote Hartline since he seems well respected and has surfaced as an HC candidate a few times.

If Day was not willing to.fire Johnson to placate Knowles then you have to wonder if Day promotes him to DC.

Just random thoughts, nothing else.

Great take, Gat. But after seeing what Day and his family went through, who would want to coach in Columbus?  Urban Meyer has noted on several occasions that coaching in Columbus is as pressure-packed as coaching in the SEC.

Penn State, which hasn’t held the No. 1 spot in any poll this century, is already in the white-hot spotlight this offseason.

Should be an EPIC match-up of Undefeateds!! Oregon should be sporting a 4-0 record over Montana State & Northwestern & two OSU's, one Coached by "A Man!" the other, a Conference Champion!

What has me puzzled about this is that thee Ohio State University would have had no trouble matching Penn State's $$$ offer to Knowles. Instead, they let him go, to a rival, in the same conference. Now they have to go through the process of getting a DC to fill in the spot vacated by arguably the best DC...and their OC might be leaving.

The last thing I want to see happen here is Hampton go to OSU and outcoach Tosh. And it definitely says something already that OSU doesn't want Tosh. I know the 2 reasons why, our last 2 games of the season. You can guarantee questions Hampton will get in the interview, what happened and what would you have done differently if you were the DC?

Knowles D cupboard at Penn State is far from bare. Like Michigan in 2023 and Ohio State in 2024, talented draft-eligible Juniors are returning to Happy Valley. P$U is opening the wallet.

There may have been a tell on this yesterday at the tOSU celebration.  Day called out the current safeties coach Matt Guerrieri (sp) as 'one of the brightest young minds in college foitball'.

Guessing he would not bring in Hampton as it might cost him Guerrieri.

I think I could do it for three million😂.

Good point on the family thing Jon. I don't know if Penn State is any easier a place to coach. I just don't think it's as high profile in Happy Valley because there's not much media coverage there. Ohio State is based in Columbus and while it's not New York or Philly it's still a top 30 city in the US.

Imagine Oregon being in Portland. I'd say USC , UCLA, Miami, Rutgers, Northwestern, Georgia Tech, USF, UCF or Boston College are comparable but they aren't. People in LA, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Jersey or Tampa have many other things and sports to pay attention to than their college team. Columbus is a fairly large city, but their sports team isn't the Blue Jackets. So you have a top 30 market centered on a college team.

I can tell you there are fanatics that have said some nasty things towards Florida coaches. But it's not as publicized because nobody knows where Gainesville is on the map. Closest big city I'd compare the Ohio State thing is in Austin. But there is just as much pressure in Norman Oklahoma, Lincoln Nebraska or Clemson South Carolina. I wish this wasn't true, but I've had conversations with guys who told me they wanted to burn Dan Mullen's boat down one year. I don't know if they were just venting or serious, but it kind of scared me how these people react to a game played by 18-22 year old men.

Great post!

Colin Cowherd often says, "Judge your decisions based on what your primary rivals think about them." A variation of that would be, "What can you learn from what your primary rivals do."

If osu is interested in Hampton and not Lupoi, that would get my mind churning. Do they see Lupoi exceptional and untouchable? Have they seen enough of Lupoi, and know they don't want anything to do with him? What is it about Hampton that they want so bad; what do they know or see?

I would imagine that if they're considering Hampton instead of Lupoi, it's probably because they see something in his skillset that's more compatible with their personnel and defensive philosophy.  Remember, Lupoi is the other guy on Oregon's staff that has a national championship ring as a DC...he's not perfect but he's not exactly chopped liver either.

Definitely a possibility.
