Greg McElroy: "Poetic Justice for Ohio State to Win Championship"

Recommended Posts

“Ohio State is a worthy champion,” McElroy stated, following the Buckeyes’ victory. “I think it’s even more impressive to think what this team had to overcome, and to know that had the four-team Playoff been in place, they would not have made it. It is poetic justice that the 12-team Playoff came to existence this year.

“Think about how many times in the four-team Playoff era Ohio State was this close.

Excuse me? It's time Ohio State won a championship???? What they had to overcome?

Though I can barely hold back my hatred for osu, the only thing I agree with what McElroy said is, ". . .worthy champion".

A quick story: In college, we had a roommate from a wealthy family that confessed to us that he had been "salami-style" stealing our shampoo (i.e., take shampoo from a different roommate each day) in order to save money and hide the fact he was stealing. We appreciated his honesty, and not caring very much, we all laughed about it and easily moved on. A few days later, he entered the apartment and triumphantly declared that he bought his own shampoo. He had a look on his face that made it appear he expected us to congratulate and applaud him for this. We were unimpressed because normal people buy their own shampoo and don't steal from others.

That is how I feel about osu having to "overcome" something. Really!? They had the most expensive, talented, experienced roster in the nation with legendary coaches as OC and DC; arguably the best coaching staff in the nation.

You didn't overcome hardship, you just finally played up to what was expected of you.

A worthy champion, yes . . . but no applause for your "hardship".

Thank you for your perfect parable!

2 loses, one of which was inexcusable to Michigan... And they had to play up to their roster's massive potential.

No poetic justice... Just lucky the playoff expanded this year.

Definitely a worthy champion.

But what they overcame most of all was their own fanbase,

Yes, that should be the headline.

"Poetic Justice?"

The team with the platinum roster found the perfect season to screw up; the season when the PO expanded to reap more gold for CFB.

Ohio State winning it all is the antithesis of Poetic Justice: 'The fact of experiencing a fitting or deserved retribution for one's actions.'

But what do you want from a guy who played QB at Bama? 🤓

The funny thing is that both of Ohio States last two championships can thank the playoff. 2014 the playoff expands and Ohio State slips in as the No. 4 seed. 2024 the playoff expands and Ohio State gets in because it's a 12 team playoff. They did then go on to win it all both years and taking out our Ducks in the process.

But still in both years the Ducks would have been in the championship running regardless. 2014 we were ranked no. 2 and if it was still the BCS we'd get in... However the BCS favors undefeated teams so probably sitting that one out for the undeserving FSU who would have been demolished against Bama.

Then this year if it was a 4 team playoff .... Well that is harder to figure out who would and wouldn't have been in besides Oregon. There were no other clear cut teams in by the old 4 team model of 1 loss teams... So maybe Notre Dame but they had that really bad loss to NIU. But in both cases it's clear that if the playoff hadn't expanded OSU would have been OUT.

What did the Championship cost? Ohio State Athletic Dept claims 37 Million in the hole.

On paper, it may have looked like Ohio State football single-handedly dominated its College Football Playoff competition, but...

Yeah, "poetic justice" still doesn't fit, but in 2014, osu2 did win with their 3rd string QB; they were spared "poetic justice" this time by the botched format benefitting the L's to Oregon and Michigan and making them champion instead of a 3 loss team.

Why are we crying about poor Ohio State. Oh poor babies haven't won a National Title in ten years. I guess they'll just have to take solace in their 11 win seasons. Poor babies haven't beaten Michigan in four straight years, guess they'll have to ask the prior three recruiting classes that won against them every year they were there. Poor babies haven't won a conference title since 2020. Guess they'll have to rely on the four straight they won before that.

Poor babies lost a coordinator. Guess they'll just have to poach another like they did last year twice in former NFL coach O'Brien and then UCLA head coach Chip Kelly when O'Brien left. Poor babies had people trying to get their fourth string five star receiver. Geez it's like Finebaum telling us how restless Alabama fans are with how terrible they've been since Saban retired.
