University of Oregon alum and Creswell, OR native Mark Few notched his 44th NCAA tournament win. Number 45 is going t be a whole lot more difficult against #1 seed Houston on Saturday.

8 is the lowest, maybe ever, for a Few Gonzaga team, their streak of 9 Sweet 16's in a row is definitely in jeopardy.

I have always been an admirer of Gonzaga's Mark Few, the one guy in contemporary college basketball that reminds me of  UCLA's John Wooden, not in his overall level of success, but in the discipline and comportment with which his teams play. That showed big time in the Zags absolute first-half stomping of my young Dawgs in the game today. An earlier interview with a Zag guard indicated that Georgia would be hyped up and that Gonzaga would come out with all guns blazing to try to put Georgia in a deep hole. They executed that plan to perfection and it worked so well because they shot the lights out in the first 10 minutes of the first half.

This same guard said in the interview that he and his teammates felt poised entering this game because they go to the tournament every year and are not overwhelmed by the stage that they are on. He intimated that Georgia, which had only one player who had ever played in a NCAA tournament game, might not display the came poise early on. I have a feeling that this guy, when his playing days are done, might well make a good coach himself. I wonder how much of this "vision" might not have come from Mark Few himself during the past few days of game preparation.

How far can Duke go without Connor Flagg? Apparently, the question doesn't need to be asked, Fladd missed the ACC Tournament, but he's ready to go against Mount Saint Mary's in today's first round game. I don't think Duke needs Flagg to win this game, so his ankle is probably okay. Should Duke get past Mount Saint Mary's, Flagg will be needed against Baylor in Rd.2.

Mount Saint Mary's, from Maryland, is playing Duke now. In a few minutes, Saint Mary's, from California, once coached by Ernie Kent, will be playing Vanderbilt.

So far, 12 seeds are 2-1 vs 5's.   Liberty vs Oregon will be the fourth matchup.

69-67 McNeese vs Clemson

78-70 Colorado St vs Memphis

65-68 San Diego vs Michigan

Tough day for the Commodores. Men lose to the Gaels and the Women to OBD!

4-seed Maryland looked solid today. The Terps play 12-seed Colorado State tomorrow after the Rams upset 5-seed Clemson.

B1G is 5-0 to date in the Men's tourney. OBD, Illinois, and Michigan State play tonight. Sparty has a 10 PM start in Cleveland. But it's all about the 'student-athlete,' right?

It's a B1G Deal. 100% (8-0) of the B1G advances to the 2nd Round.

SEC - 57%, 8 of 14 advance.

This is the best performance this century for this historically underperforming conference, and by a long shot. Now the price of poker goes up this weekend. But congrats to the B1G thus far.

As I detest the B1G, I hope every one of those suckers, except OBD and maybe UCLA, lose before the Final Four.  As for the SEC, I thought that only the top 4 teams (and possibly a lucky Kentucky) had much chance of exiting the first round of the Sweet 16 this year. one thing I have noticed is that classical Centers are making a comeback in the college game--get a couple of those 6' 10"+ monsters that can move and you have a team that is hard to beat. Most SEC teams are not built that way and it is beginning to show on the court.

B1G No.4 Purdue made it 9-0 for the conference beating No. 11 McNeese, and Okay!!! B1G moves to 10-0, with Michigan's 91-79 win over Texas A & M. Tre Donaldson, who Charles Barkley says is his favorite player, despite transferring to Michigan from Auburn, comes up big again, as Michigan turned the game around in the last 8 minutes. If overall No.1 Auburn gets past No.8 Creighton, it will be B1G No.5 Michigan against SEC No.1 Auburn in the Sweet 16.

B1G No.3 Wisconsin down 47-36 to No.6 BYU at halftime.

B1G No.7 UCLA vs SEC No.2 Tennessee at around 6:40 PST on TRU TV

Well, B1G drops one, now 10-1. Wisconsin was down all game against BYU, but had a comeback going, down by 2 with 13.5 left, but BYU played great D and Tonje could only hope for a foul to be called on a tough last shot. It wasn't, BYU wins 91-89. Meanwhile UCLA and Tenneessee are in a tight one...until the last 2:15 of the 1st half, Tennessee goes on an 8-0 run. leads, 32-25.

SEC gets one over the B1G, Tennessee 67-58, Tennessee Coach was not pleased that UCLA didn't concede in the last 2 minutes.  so. the B1G is now 10-2.  No.4 Maryland, No.5 Oregon and No.2 Michigan State try to join Purdue in the Sweet 16 tomorrow.

Boy the competition and this fan's viewing interest ramped up significantly today, maybe because this was the winners bracket. I found the first round of this tournament one of the most boring first rounds I have ever witnessed. By contrast, there were several riveting games in the Saturday slate and I hope that it will continue to be riveting tomorrow.

Thanks to 30, et al, for all of the tournament updates and comments.

Thursday night, No. 5 Michigan plays the overall No. 1 seed Auburn in Atlanta. The Wolverines made a gutty comeback in a game where the refs allowed body checks and called ticky-tack fouls.

Michigan fans will be well represented in the ATL.

How do you like that No. 1 seed Houston? Your Sweet 16 reward is playing No. 4 Purdue on Thursday night in Indianapolis. 😁

It would be Sweet 🤑 if favorites No. 1 Michigan State vs. 10 New Mexico, and No. 4 Maryland Maryland vs. No. 12 Colorado State move on today, along with upset winners No. 6 Illinois vs. No. 3 Kentucky, and No. 5 OBD vs. the No. 4 Tucson Kitty-Cats.

Ducks fans, show up and make some noise!

MASH THE MILDCATS. There's no place like Newark in March! 🤪

No.1 Duke hammers No.9 Baylor, 89-63. I have to admit, back in the late 70's, before Coach K, who started at Duke in 1980, I was a Duke fan because I loved Jim Spanarkel's name. I was also briefly a fan of West Virginia, because they had a player named Kevin Pittsnogle, back in 2006. I cheered when Grant Hill heaved the court long pass to Laettner against Kentucky, and was a fan of Bobby Hurley, before he became incredibly annoying as the coach at ASU. Duke is going to be hard to beat this time.

The late start times in the Eastern time zone, a 9:39 PM tip-off for Duke vs. Arizona in Newark, 9:39 for Auburn vs Michigan in Atlanta, and 10 PM for Houston vs. Purdue in Indianapolis are disgraceful.
