CFP Moves to Straight Seed Approach for Byes

Recommended Posts

ESPN, Heather Dinich Twitter

The 12-team College Football Playoff will move to a straight seeding model this fall, rewarding the selection committee’s top four teams with the top four seeds and a first-round bye, multiple sources told ESPN. The 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua, who comprise the CFP’s management committee, reached the unanimous agreement necessary to make the change during a call on Thursday afternoon.

This means Notre Dame will now no longer be excluded from a first-round bye if they have a top four seed.  The byes were granted to conference champions only.

Now, if they just re-seed after each round.

They weren't' excluded before, the byes went to conference champions. Now there is no incentive at all for Notre Dame to join a conference, "Oh don't bother Notre Dame, here you go."

Where were you when I wanted you? Where were you when I needed you?

Can we flash back to 1/1/25 and watch OBD play Boise State or the Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl, instead of being format-hosed-over?

'NO.' 😩

As someone said, when the Pope was from Argentina - no first round bye.   Now that the Pope is from the USA, ....

LOL!

Why Oregon as new post-season beta sites? Stop beta-ing, and buckeye-ing, the Alpha Duck!

It would have been a damn sight better than what happened on 1/1/25. And who knows, maybe Jeremiah Smith, Chip, and the entire defense eat iffy breakfast burritos that morning and the outcome is a whole lot different.

Possibly not, but I have to believe the gauntlet tOSU would have had to run to get to the NC would have prepared Oregon better to face them.

Read an interesting piece today about the potential impact for Miami (Cristobal).   If there are limited opportunities for ACC participants (after Clemson, Florida State) and if the ACC champ is no longer guaranteed a first round bye that might put Miami on the road if they do qualify...

Look...yes it sucks that we had to be the guinea pig, but at least common sense prevailed for this upcoming season.  You can argue that this should have been foreseen earlier, but once the rules had been set in place, you can't just change them mid-season.  In the end we got beat by the most talented team in the country, we deserved to lose, and I think we would have lost in the finals even if tOSU had been on the other side of the bracket.
