Here's a piece I wrote taking a Hawaii view of him as a Duck:

He should have been a 3 time Heisman.

Interesting MM was the better college QB, but JH is the better pro QB (so far).

I guess it really is about what team picks you…

It's about the coaches you play for. MM ran a system at Oregon that was well suited to his skill set. JH's time at Oregon was different almost almost every year and he was never able to settle into a single system. MM didn't fit the system at Tennessee and has been hurt most of his time as a Raider. JH has the perfect coaches, system, and team mates with the Chargers to fit his skill set.

Drew Brees recently talked about his impressions going into the NFL and how those impressions changed over time. He said that as a person going in, he just wanted to be the highest draft pick possible so he could get the best contract. In retrospect, he realized, that in the long run, who you end up playing for is way more important in terms of career longevity and success.

Very true in his case. Brees was drafted by the Chargers. He struggled early, but in 2004 he earned a spot in the Pro Bowl, and was named Comeback Player of the Year. But a year later he signed with the Saints as a Free Agent, where he set NFL records and will be a First Ballot selection into the Hall of Fame.

This is vintage Mariota and something that AB has proven over and over that he has a difficult time at making the the correct read while running or passing.
