Blowout win showcases Dan Lanning and staff's coaching chops

Lanning and his staff's game-planning this weekend was impressive. They found a weak link in UCLA's special teams

to get a stolen possession. They found a weakness in UCLA's running defense and exploited it all game. Then there was

the clock management of knowing when to push the tempo on UCLA and when to slow it down and bleed the clock.

This is a good, informative, fun to read article. Learn how our coaches planned for this game...

"Unofficial game stats"

For someone not watching the game, just to look at team stats, it would seem like the game was closer than it was.  But if you saw it, the game was blown wide open early when Oregon recovered the on-side kick and took it down for a score making it 2 score lead and never looking back.  31-10 at he Half felt like the Ducks were in control and the Bruins never really threatened them after that.

I think I heard Brock Huard say Oregon had 21 1st downs in the 1st Half alone.  That's an eye-opener!

Bill Oram: Oregon Ducks coach Dan Lanning takes page from Chip Kelly’s book to overwhelm Bruins

Sending his kicker onto the field with a one-touchdown lead and directing him to recover his own onside kick.

That’s something Kelly would have done.

Going for it on fourth down and 1 in his own territory — twice — for a back-breaking seven-minute drive?

Chip would have done that, too.

Lanning's call for a first-half onside kick opened the floodgates against UCLA and showed the Ducks have the kind of leadership they've missed since Kelly's departure.

Could you hear the rest of the Pac-12 cheering UCLA’s loss at Oregon?

So how awkward, how uncomfortable, the start of this season must have been for the Pac-12 outside of L.A.

The turncoats were, not so long ago, undefeated. A combined 12-0 and looking like the class of the conference they plan to abandon in two years.

An article from the Orange County Register with a different perspective...

The Beat L.A. energy is real this season in the Pac-12, with everyone still reeling from the summer bombshell that USC and UCLA plan to bolt for a Big Ten payday in two years.

That was a fitting send-off for UCLA before they bolt for the B1G.  Now we need to do the same to USC in the Pac-12 Championship, so I'll be hoping they beat UCLA in their head-to-head so O doesn't have to play Chip's team again.

Six games later, it’s legitimately impossible to argue with him.

Lost some respect for DTR after those comets. You got beats,  son.

Oregon was better than your guys, DTR,  and you know why they didn’t perform?

They didn’t perform because the Ducks didn’t let them.

Bruins scored 3 when Oregon scored 7. The Ducks were better on offense, defense, special teams, and coaching.

Sore loser and bulletin board material for any rematch.

DTR: Definition of poor loser?

DTR needs to be thankful we took mercy on UCLA towards the end of the game.  Oregon could have easily scored a TD to go up by three touch downs.  We didn't, we ran out the clock instead with over two minutes left in the game.

Oregon was the better team on Saturday.  Bo Nix executed beautifully with everything UCLA defense threw at him.  Front line won in the trenches.  Our offense executed so well, keeping UCLA's offense on the side lines.  In the third quarter, Oregon took off over 7 minutes in a 15 play drive and scored a TD!

Our defense also came up with enough plays to keep UCLA from scoring their average.  Yes, UCLA had some opportunities, but we limited their chances to score.  This is due to the combination of our offensive and defensive plays.

I will be rooting for USC to beat UCLA.  Oregon continues to progress and getting stronger each and every game so far hoping they continue to do so, winning the rest of their games.  Play USC in the Pac-12 championship and defeat them.

From there we will be playing no lower than the Rose Bowl against, most likely, either Michigan or Ohio St.  Not sure if we would get an invitation to compete for the National title.

Report Card: Despite the big win over UCLA, the defense still isn't quite there

What’s scary about this team is that although the players came up huge, the defense still has a ways to go.

When the Ducks lock down their defensive scheme and make consistent plays, the sky is the limit for Oregon.

Duck defense does enough to win, a lot remaining to work on

In a game between two of the nation's most prolific scoring offenses, the Bruins were never forced to punt, and scored points on six of seven total drives.

Somehow that proved enough though. The difference was the value of the scores on those drives. UCLA settled for three field goals, Oregon for just one.

Stock Report: Troy Franklin's big day headlines booming business for Oregon offense

It’s safe to say that when we take a look at the offense, the stock is going to be up across the board.

The defense still needs a little bit of help, but with a defensive-minded head coach like Dan Lanning,

and a solid staff of coaches around him, I have faith that Oregon will get things clicking on that side of the ball in due time.

Let’s identify players who saw their stocks go up, and a few who might have seen a slight dip against UCLA:

Chemistry between Nix and Irving exemplified on critical late down throws

A perfectly thrown pass to Bucky Irving running down the sideline gave him a clear route to the endzone for the

37-yard touchdown. Nix's passing prowess was on display on that throw.

"I mean, it's just the chemistry that I have so much trust in him, and he has trust in me," said Irving after practice on Tuesday.

"Just a big part of it is him knowing the game, he's been around the game for a long time. I just try to piggyback off his game and what he's seeing.

He tells me what I can do better, and I feel like that helps me a lot."
