Behind Enemy Lines: Previewing the Holiday Bowl with Tar Heels Wire

Despite the numerous transfers and opt-outs on both sidelines that have depleted each roster to a degree, this is still an

incredibly intriguing matchup between Ducks and Tar Heels, and it will feature one of the best-looking jersey matchups as well.

To help us break down this game and learn a little bit more about the Tar Heels season,

we talked with Zack Pearson of USA TODAY’s Tar Heels Wire for another edition of ‘Behind Enemy Lines.’

Can Oregon Ducks contain North Carolina’s Drake Maye in Holiday Bowl?

Maye is the best quarterback Oregon has faced this season. He’s completing 67.2% of his passes, has a 17-to-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio against winning teams and is one of only nine players to pass for over 2,500 yards and run for over 500 yards.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Maye can throw in tight windows and connect on long balls, as his 62 passes of 20-plus yards (fourth nationally) underscores.

Hythloday's entertaining and insightful film breakdown of UNC. Their QB Maye is the real deal. Their defense is a bit of a dumpster fire in both the run and pass game even before the transfers and opt outs.

He includes a few clips of UNC defensive successes against Miami. You know what's coming here. They're against straight up A or B gap handoffs to the RB out of the pistol, and delayed drop back passes to the RB or inside WR well short of the 1st down marker.

Lanning expects Holiday Bowl to provide young players enhanced roles

Oregon coach Dan Lanning remained guarded at Tuesday morning's press conference regarding personnel decisions. What is certain is that this week's game with North Carolina will provide a handful of young players the most sizable roles of their young playing careers.

“I think we wait to watch the game and you guys see who you see," Lanning said when asked to highlight young players who could fill those bigger roles. "Certainly there’s gonna be a lot of young guys out there for us for both teams. Like coach [Mack Brown] said there can be negative connotations with who’s in and who’s out of these games, but I’d rather see the end of the positive side.

That’s the side of some young guys are gonna get opportunities that all year have been sitting there waiting for their chance. You hope that they’ve done everything they can to prepare themselves for that moment."

Dan Lanning expects Bo Nix to play 'some of his best football' on Wednesday

Nix had almost exactly a month to physically prepare for this game, and he’s locked in

after making the announcement to return to the Ducks for the 2023 season.

“I certainly think he feels a lot better than he did at the end of the season,” Lanning said.

“I expect him to play some of his best football.”

12 Oregon players who could be poised for a breakout in the Holiday Bowl

When Lanning and his squad go up against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Holiday Bowl

on Wednesday afternoon, both sides will be without a number of key players.

That leaves a lot of spots to fill on the field, and we can assume that the players lower down on the depth chart

will likely get a chance to prove themselves. In essence, this game against the Tar Heels is sort of like a

spring game in a sense, giving Oregon fans a chance to see who some of the next best players will be.

Here’s who I think could end up having a breakout game against North Carolina:

Holiday Bowl to feature two of sport's best quarterbacks in Bo Nix and Drake Maye

Few quarterbacks in the country mean more to their offenses than the two that will square off in San Diego on Wednesday evening.

Oregon's Bo Nix and North Carolina's Drake Maye are among the sport's best at the position. They are do-it-all players who are just

as capable of connecting on balls downfield as they are of tucking it and collecting yardage on the ground.

This will be the first bowl game of Maye's career to conclude the first season as a starting collegiate quarterback. Nix has already played in two bowl games, both losses at Auburn, and has been a collegiate starter before Maye was enrolled at Chapel Hill.

The Holiday Bowl could act as a springboard game for both to enter the offseason Heisman Trophy conversation.

The Holiday Bowl serves as a sendoff and thank you to Oregon's super-seniors

Wednesday night in San Diego will mark the end of careers for multiple Oregon football players. For a small select group, it'll be the end

of a second year of being a senior. Oregon saw key starters on both offense and defense return in 2023 to help usher in a new era of

Oregon football. Against North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning hopes to send those seniors out in style.

"My experience sitting here would have been so different without those guys," Lanning said of his seniors.

Burden on depleted defenses as Oregon, UNC chase 10th win in Holiday Bowl

"Both defenses hear how great the offenses are going to be, so they’re going to be mad,” Brown said. “They think nobody gives them a chance, so that means those defenses will fight hard.”

But it's hard to ignore where the strengths have been for the Ducks (9-3) and Tar Heels (9-4).

Oregon ranks fourth nationally in total offense at 507.8 yards per game and ninth in the country in scoring at 39.7 points per game.

North Carolina is 14th in total offense (473.6 YPG) and 23rd in scoring (35.0 PPG).

Conversely, the Ducks sit 75th in total defense while the Tar Heels rank 116th.

Bill Oram: Mack Brown a very welcome reminder that football coaches are allowed to be entertaining

Brown darts off one-liners like Bo Nix zipping short passes on a bum ankle. He fills a notebook as fast as anyone

I’ve ever been around. He keeps the hits coming like he’s Tony Gwynn. Sports need less smack talk and more Mack talk.

The 71-year-old won a national championship with Texas in 2005 and on Tuesday was wry and charismatic and

interesting. He had opinions. Do other college football coaches know they’re allowed to be entertaining?

I don’t blame Dan Lanning, by the way, for not being more like Brown. Few are. The 36-year-old Oregon coach

looked admiringly at Brown as the elder statesman delivered one compelling monologue after another.

LOOK: Social media video hints at Ducks uniform combination for Holiday Bowl

One of the biggest things that takes place during the football season in the world of Oregon Duck fans is the uniform release.

It comes out at 5 p.m. PT on the dot, each and every Wednesday before the game.

So it became peculiar that on the eve of the Holiday Bowl, the Ducks were yet to release what jerseys they would be wearing

against the North Carolina Tar Heels. No tweet, no color scheme, no hints at all.

A social media post from freshman cornerback Jahlil Florence might have tipped the team’s hand. Check out what it is...

UNC football gets chance at redemption in San Diego. Or so the Tar Heels hope, anyway

So thanks to the COVID cancellations in 2020 and 2021, North Carolina will (presumably) become the first ACC team to actually play in the Holiday Bowl, which has been a Pac-12 destination for more than 20 years but is new to the ACC rotation.

North Carolina might be as relieved as N.C. State was dissatisfied if Oregon ended up bailing the way UCLA did. The Tar Heels are a 14.5-point underdog, one of the biggest pups of the entire bowl season (Purdue, against LSU in the Citrus Bowl, is also a 14.5-point dog) and not without reason.

Holiday Bowl preview: Scouting the Tar Heels

On paper, this should set the Ducks up perfectly for an offensive masterclass. Nix’s top three receivers will be active in the game, as well as the entire offensive line and top two running backs. The challenge will primarily be for the defense to hold up on its end.

Maye is one of only six quarterbacks this year to throw for over 4,000 yards. He can also run the ball just as efficiently as Nix, with 653 rushing yards. Unlike Nix, however, Maye will be without his favorite target.

The shorthanded teams still have plenty to work with and will make for a competitive matchup.

2022 Holiday Bowl: Odds, prediction and how to watch

When the bowl schedule first came out, the 2022 Holiday Bowl was one that caught my eye and the reason is simple — two elite quarterbacks.

With two dynamic quarterbacks, the offenses should dominate this game. Both teams will be without their offensive coordinators, which could be a bit of a challenge, yet the fireworks should be plenty.

Both teams are trending in the wrong direction and are dealing with some opt-outs. However, Oregon is the heavy favorite and is favored by 13.5 points according to Fan Duel. The over/under is 74.5 and the money line is -500 for Oregon and +350 for North Carolina.

Mack Brown heaps praise on Dan Lanning's job as a first year head coach

“We’re excited to play Oregon,” Brown said. “Dan has done an amazing job. First-year coaches, it’s really hard. He didn’t recruit most of those guys. He goes out in his first game and has a tough game with Georgia and then pulls them all back together and regroups.

And that could have been a turning point for him in a bad way because he didn’t know a lot of those kids, and he has done an amazing job of pulling it together and keeping it together and putting himself in a position to have a great team.”

5 THINGS TO WATCH: HOLIDAY BOWL

The Oregon football team will try to secure the 13th 10-win season in program history Wednesday, 22 years after capping the very first 10-win season in school history by winning the Holiday Bowl.

Oregon is making its fourth Holiday Bowl appearance, having won here in 2000 over Texas, lost to Oklahoma in 2005 and defeated Oklahoma State in 2008.

The victory in 2000 came over a Longhorns team coached by Mack Brown, who will be on the sideline as the Tar Heels' head coach.

How will Oregon Ducks maneuver around UNC linebacker Cedric Gray?

The Tar Heels linebacker enters Wednesday’s matchup with No. 15 Oregon (9-3) with 138 tackles, fourth nationally, with 10 stops for loss. Gray also has five pass breakups, three forced fumbles and two interceptions.

Most of Gray’s stops are solo tackles and he’s not easily schemed around. He’s consistent, with at least seven tackles in each of the last 12 games and 13 or more in six of those games.
