Troy Taylor to become Stanford's next head coac

Stanford has finally landed on a replacement for David Shaw

The new Cardinal head coach actually was a star quarterback at Cal before being drafted in the fourth round by the New York Jets.

Outside of his head coaching experience with Sacramento State, he spent time as the offensive coordinator for Utah (2017-18),

co-offensive coordinator at Eastern Washington (2016), and was also the head coach at Folsom High School from 2002 to 2015.

He sounds like a good hire. His offensive prowess should bring Cardinal football into the 21st century.

Should help to keep the Pac? relevant.

I notice that he is the "Director of Football" in the press release. Why not the Leland Stanford Jr. University Head of the Department of Football Studies? Sounds much better than "coach".

Jon Gold: Stanford gets its man -- now the hard part begins for Troy Taylor

Of all the head coaching jobs in all of college football, there is none more challenging than Stanford.

Academic requirements that rival NASA’s. Transfer restrictions that render the portal merely mortal. A lack of institutional support

at a school that values political prowess more than pigskin performance and advancements in science more than advancing the football.

Can the local boy follow David Shaw and take the program to new heights? Or will the Cardinal continue to regress,

as they have in this new era of college football?

If you look at Stanford over the past five-ish years they were already running spread elements in their offense. Not sure on that whole slow mesh thing as that seemed just straight bad most of the time.

Stanford's biggest problem is recruiting. They can't use the transfer portal, they aren't competitive enough in NIL alone, they have academic restrictions that make recruiting highly selective to begin with and they can't hold onto players as many will leave via the portal.

What made Stanford so deadly for so many years was that they could recruit the solid athletes and develop them and create a pipeline of players who would see reserve play as underclassmen and then they move seamlessly into starting roles as upperclassmen.

That doesn't happen for Stanford anymore because players don't want to stick around for 2-3 years and be developed to then get their starting roles... They want to play NOW.

Best of luck to Taylor may he always lose to the Ducks.

I have seen the admission data for Stanford and they do let in kids with less than perfect SAT scores and 4.0 GPA's.  I'll give them they are most selective in choosing their student athletes, but they need to stop crying about the limited pool of athletes.  They can get kids if they worked hard enough in recruiting and in the portal.  None of Stanford's other sports seem to have a problem.  Granted, 85 scholarships is harder to fill than say a basketball team worth of scholarships.
