I LOVE the angle of recruiting from the Portal.

Limit the payout for Freshmen. Let these kids prove it in their freshman season and Portal them in. 4-5* means nothing as a HS recruit. Don't get me wrong, I want the 5* as much as anyone. But, I want Patrick Chungs. 2* comes in and gets to the League.

I agree with Fentrees on his statement about not knowing if HS kids are really worth their star rankings.

One of the best comparisons I have heard regarding HS kids is as follows:

The kid is an all-star in high school playing against a few other all-stars but mostly mid level talent.

These all-stars get to college and find out many of the other kids are all-stars as well and have to compete.

These kids either flourish or wash out.

All this said you never “know” what you have, just a general idea and hope.

That’s why paying more attention to sites like Rivals, as opposed to 247, seems to give a more accurate * picture. Without knowing exactly their criteria, they appear to take into consideration the environment in which a player performs as much as the player’s performance.

I loved Anthony Newman’s response to “losing” a 5-star recruit. Who gives a d@mn?! We want players who want to be in Eugene!

Coach Bellotti used to compare a QB to tea. You don’t know what you have until you put it in hot water.
