OFF TOPICS: For Your Interest...

Recommended Posts

Sometimes there are articles of interest, but they really don't merit their own thread...Those articles will now go in here.

In my searches, I often run across these type of articles and have just not done anything with them. With the football season coming to an end, there are fewer and fewer articles being written.

I thought this would be the perfect time to start this "For Your Interest" thread. Postings will relate back to OBD in some way.

As this will be a continuous thread, older postings will be deleted as newer ones are added.

Be sure to come back often...You just might find something of interest to ponder...

Is Iowa the worst 2-loss team of all time? And it only has 2-losses because of a terrible late-in-the-game call that took away a winning punt return.

Iowa has the worst O in the P5/G5. IMO, the B1G should have cratered divisions this season. Michigan vs Ohio State in a rematch of the competitive game played on Saturday would be far more interesting. Iowa was beat down and shut out at Penn State. I expect we will see the same come Saturday.

STEIN NAMED BROYLES AWARD FINALIST

Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein was announced as one of five finalists for the 2023 Broyles Award on Monday by the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation. The Broyles Award is presented annually to the top assistant coach in college football.

Stein is a finalist along with Mike Bobo (Georgia), Phil Parker (Iowa), Mike Denbrock (LSU) and Sherrone Moore (Michigan). He joins Gary Crowton (2005) as the only Oregon assistant coaches ever to be named a finalist for the award.

The winner of the 2023 Broyles Award will be announced at the Broyles Award ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock.

Stein has directed one of the nation's most potent and balanced offenses in his first season with the Ducks.

Entering Friday's Pac-12 Championship Game vs. Washington (5 p.m. PT, ABC), the Ducks lead the nation in passing offense (351.4 YPG), completion percentage (78.3), sacks allowed (5), first downs per game (27.3) and scrimmage plays of 10-plus yards (229).

Oregon is No. 2 nationally in scoring offense (45.3 PPG), total offense (540.3 YPG), total yards per play (7.85) and fewest turnovers (6), and No. 3 in both yards per carry (5.84) and third-down conversion percentage (52.24).

The Ducks are the only team in the nation to score at least 30 points in every game this season...

Report: Big Names Expected To Enter NCAA's Transfer Portal

The NCAA's Transfer Portal window is set to open following the conclusion of the 2023 regular season.

Some big names are expected to hit the portal.

247Sports' Brad Crawford is hearing some names that will "make heads spin."

It should be a fascinating transfer season.

"Some of the names I've heard who will enter the transfer portal will make your head spin," he tweeted out on Monday morning.

As always, quarterback is the position with the most eyeballs, and some big-time programs could be going after a new signal-caller this offseason.

Oregon, Washington, Nebraska, USC, Notre Dame...perhaps even Ohio State, could all target a big name at quarterback in the transfer portal this winter.

Get your popcorn ready, everyone...

Oregon WR Troy Franklin gets snubbed as a finalist for Biletnikoff Award

It’s been clear all season long that Oregon Ducks wide receiver Troy Franklin is playing on a different level than we’ve seen from any pass-catcher in Eugene for quite some time.

However, that level of play is not being recognized, as Franklin was snubbed as a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, which is given to the college football season’s outstanding FBS receiver.

Through 12 games, Franklin has 77 catches for 1,349 yards and 14 touchdowns. He’s broken the Oregon Ducks single-season receiving records for yards and touchdowns, and also broken the school record for most receiving touchdowns in a career.

The finalists for the award are Ohio State’s Marvin Harrrison Jr., Washington’s Rome Odunze, and LSU’s Malik Nabers.

Here’s how Franklin’s stats stack up to the other three...

Oregon record book tracker: Where things stand at the regular season's conclusion

Oregon's 2023 season has the makings of a special one. The team is ranked fifth nationally and set to face No. 3 Washington this Friday in Las Vegas with a College Football Playoff berth on the line.

A team this good is built upon great individual players. That is certainly the case this season with many of the program's single-season and career records subject to fall before the season's conclusion.

Here's a rundown of which single-season or career records appear attainable by current Oregon football players...

The best player on each conference championship team

Conference championship weekend has officially arrived, and the stakes are going to be at an all-time high. Seven of the top eight teams in the College Football Playoff rankings will be in action, all with a shot to make the four-team field.

From a highly-anticipated rematch between Washington and Oregon in the final Pac-12 championship game, to another Alabama-Georgia showdown in the SEC title game, to Michigan, Florida State and Texas each playing for their playoff lives, there is plenty of drama heading into conference championship weekend. And there will be no shortage of high-end talent on display.

With that in mind, we are highlighting who we believe to be the best player on each team in the Power Five conference championship games.

Getting Loud: Career Records with Covid and Transfers

Who gets to claim the career records for players who transfer?

Bo Nix is the greatest QB in the history of both Oregon and Auburn. No disrespect to Justin Herbert, Marcus Mariota or Stan White (Auburn’s record holder, don’t worry, I had to look him up too), but his numbers are statistically the best ever seen at either school.

I’m not talking about completion percentage or passer rating either. Though he blows away the competition in both categories there as well. I am talking about yards and touchdowns.

With 7,499 yards right now, Nix will make #3 on the Oregon career passing yards board with 230 yards to pass Bill Musgrave, probably by the time they play “Shout” in Vegas this Friday.

I don’t think he will make up the 3,000 yards he is behind Marcus Mariota and Justin Herber for the top 2 spots. But his career 14,750 yards and 105 TDs total makes him the best QB in the history of both Auburn and Oregon. So which school gets to claim him?

It’s a silly thought, but I am about to get loud about it...

Top 5 most watchable college football conference championship games

Conference Championship Week has arrived and it’s setting up for perhaps the most dramatic finish to a college football season we’ve ever seen.

A logjam of elite teams at the top has left us heading for a controversial decision by the College Football Playoff selection committee, who are likely hoping and praying for some chaos this weekend that could help make their decision easier.

As it stands now, we’ll have five Power 5 conference champions with one loss or fewer and only four spots in the playoffs. That means every little detail, every chance to make an impression on the committee, counts more than ever this weekend.

Of course, the Group of 5 have their own conference championship games as well this weekend and one of those actually makes our list this week of the five best conference championship games you should be watching.

Take a look below for our full rankings, along with where to find each game...

"Fire Chip Kelly" Banner Flies Over UCLA Tuesday Morning

With the news breaking yesterday that UCLA intends to keep Chip Kelly, some UCLA fans invested in a banner to fly over UCLA on Tuesday morning asking for Martin Jarmond to fire the embattled head coach.

On Tuesday morning, in the wake of reports that UCLA intends to keep Chip Kelly for a 7th year despite his 34-34 record through six seasons in Westwood and the ignominious late season losses at home to 3-9 ASU by 10 and 6-6 Cal by 26, UCLA fans paid for a banner to be flown over the UCLA campus asking for Martin Jarmond to "Read the Room: Fire Chip Kelly."

Where Bo Nix ranks among Oregon Ducks' all-time greatest passers

The 2023 college football season officially came to an end for the Oregon Ducks on Monday with a 45-6 win over the Liberty Flames in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, and with it, the historic college career for quarterback Bo Nix saw its final chapter as well.

Nix went out with a bang, breaking numerous records on his way to a 28-for-35 showing for 363 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Now that Nix’s career as a Duck is over, we can get retrospective and start to look at his numbers as a whole, figuring out where is stands in the history of quarterbacks to play at Oregon.

When it comes to elite passers, the Ducks have had a lot of them.

From Bill Musgrave to Danny O’Neil; from Joey Harrington to Darron Thomas; from Marcus Mariota to Justin Herbert, there’s a long list of former greats to come from Eugene. Nix is now another member of that long list.

But where does he ultimately stand in Oregon history after his two incredible seasons as a Duck?

Let’s take a look...

How Dan Lanning's first two years compare to other Oregon Ducks head coaches

Ducks has officially come to a close, and he wrapped up his second year in emphatic fashion with a 45-6 win over the Liberty Flames in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl on Monday.

With the win, Oregon improved to 12-2 on the season, and Lanning picked up the second bowl game victory of his career.

While it’s impossible to perfectly compare coaches throughout the years because of the constantly changing landscape in the world of college football, what we’ve seen from Lanning so far has been impressive, to say the least, and has him up there with some of the best coaches that Oregon has seen over the last several decades.

Now that we have a two-year sample size to go off of, this felt like a great time to see how Lanning’s accolades from the past two years stack up compared to other coaches of the modern era who have come through the Ducks’ program, potentially look at what it might portend for the future...

PORTER NAMED ASSISTANT STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH

The Oregon athletic department announced the hiring of Taylor Porter as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Oregon football program on Monday morning.

Porter joins the Ducks after spending the last four seasons as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Michigan State. He comes to Eugene with a combined 15 years of experience between the NFL and Power 5 programs in college football.

"We are excited to welcome Taylor and his wife, Liz, and their daughter, Minnie, to our Oregon family," head coach Dan Lanning said.

"Coach Porter is a terrific addition to our strength and conditioning staff, and his experience at both the college and professional levels will be extremely valuable for our program.

I'm looking forward to seeing him pour into our student-athletes on a daily basis and help them become the very best they can be both on and off the field."

Oregon football has never beaten these FBS teams

Out of the 72 FBS programs that the Ducks have faced, they have only been unable to beat 11 of them. That means they have at least one win over 61 different opponents… pretty remarkable if you ask me.

Not to mention, only one of the teams in Oregon’s new conference, the Big Ten, has an undefeated record against the Ducks. That would be Northwestern who beat Oregon in 1974, the only time the two teams have played.

Who else have the Ducks been able to defeat in FBS matchups?

Here’s a conference-by-conference breakdown of the teams that can hold an undefeated streak over Oregon’s head...

10 greatest Oregon football players from the Mario Cristobal era

Mario Cristobal abandoned the Ducks. Just like Chip Kelly. Just like Willie Taggart. Cristobal left Eugene for what he saw as greener pastures.

However, Cristobal did help transform the Ducks into the powerhouse program they are today before he took his leave.

Leading the Ducks to a Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin and an unexpected road win over the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cristobal did a lot for Oregon’s football team.

He also recruited a hell of a roster in his five years with the Ducks. Starting his time as head coach in 2017, Cristobal had players in his starting lineup that even continue to shine in the NFL today.

Before leaving Euegene in 2021, Cristobal coached up and forged some truly incredible players.

Former Duck QB Robby Ashford on the move once again

Robby Ashford, former Oregon quarterback and centerfielder for the baseball team, is on the move again.

According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Ashford is going to South Carolina after spending the last two seasons at Auburn.

Ashford became the starter for the Tigers in 2022 and completed 50 percent of his passes, 1,613 yards and seven touchdowns. He did throw for seven interceptions, however.

In 2023, Ashford was relegated to a backup role behind Payton Thorne, which is most likely why he will transfer to the Gamecocks.

While at Oregon, Ashford performed well in the Spring Games, but never saw the field during the regular season in his two years in Eugene.

Ashford will have a legitimate chance at earning the starting job at South Carolina as the former signal caller, Spencer Rattler, has declared for the NFL draft...
