Big Ten's Wisconsin makes trek west for NIT quarterfinal showdown

For just the fourth time since the 1999-2000 season, a Big Ten team will come west and play the Oregon Ducks on their home floor. Tuesday night the Oregon Ducks sit one win away from the NIT semifinals in Las Vegas and they'll need to beat an opponent they've faced multiple times in the postseason play.

Tuesday night will mark the second time Wisconsin has played the Ducks on their home floor and just the third time all-time playing Oregon within the state of Oregon. Oregon hosted Wisconsin in a season-opener in 1990 and the Badgers won by two. This will also be just the fourth time since the 1999-2000 season Oregon has hosted a Big Ten team on their home floor.

"I don't know much about them. I caught a couple of Big Ten games but they were early," said Oregon head coach Dana Altman Sunday after beating UCF in the second round. "Don't know much about them, played them a few years ago, but haven't played them recently. They do a great job and always compete, and we know we'll have our hands full. No doubt."

Oregon Ducks close to matching best NIT run in school history

Nobody is going to say that NIT success rivals the excitement and thrill of March Madness.

That doesn’t mean that succeeding in the NIT means nothing, though.

If the Ducks can find a way to notch one more victory and get into the final four down in Las Vegas, it will be quite the feat considering the players that they have in sweats on the sidelines. However, how will that potential result compare to some of the best NIT runs that the Ducks have made over the years? That’s a question that I wanted an answer to.

Looking back through the history books, Oregon has made 12 trips to the NIT before this season. Here’s how those past appearances ended up.

The Ducks are a win away from matching the school record for their deepest NIT run ever.

Game Preview: Size could be issue for Ducks in NIT quarterfinal vs. Wisconsin

The Oregon Ducks have managed to make their way through the first two rounds of the National Invitation Tournament without the services of their big-man N’Faly Dante, the team’s leading scorer, leading rebounder, and leading shot-blocker.

Going into the quarterfinals against the Wisconsin Badgers on Tuesday night, his potential absence might have a bigger impact, though. The Badgers are big, and led by their best player Steve Crowl, a 7-foot big-man who has the ability to dominate inside.

LIVE UPDATES: Oregon hosts Wisconsin in NIT Quarterfinal Tilt

The Oregon Duck men's basketball program will play its final home game of the season no matter the outcome Tuesday evening. A win in the NIT Quarterfinals against an opponent that doesn't head west all that often will send the Ducks to Las Vegas for a semifinal appearance. A loss will end the Oregon Ducks' season.

Oregon enters Tuesday night's contest as a slight 4.5-point favorite over the Badgers.

A win and the Ducks will get six days off before they'd play their next game, and that'd be in Las Vegas in the semifinals of the NIT.

Dane Miller’s 2023 Pac-12 NIT Quarterfinal Preview

The NIT enters its Quarterfinal stage with one Pac-12 team left standing.

The Ducks have been reborn in the postseason tournament in large part due to their role players successfully transitioning to increased roles.

The newfound momentum is a positive sign heading into next season, yet a championship remains up for grabs this year.

I preview Oregon’s mathcup with Wisconsin here and my pick, along with that of Stephen Vilardo, appears at the bottom.

Oregon's season comes to an end in NIT quarterfinals

Oregon faced their first test of adversity in the NIT in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Leading by six with less than five minutes to play the Ducks all of a sudden found themselves down by one with 92 seconds to play in the game.

Quincy Guerrier got a driving layup down the right side of the court out of an Oregon timeout to give the Ducks the lead back with 1:27 to play in the game. The Badgers responded on the other end with a massive 3-pointer to go up by two points. Oregon's offense had three looks at a game-tying shot and missed them all. The third attempt by Bittle resulted in a foul by the Badgers, but he missed one of the two free throws.

After having to foul five times in 11 seconds to put the Badgers at the line, Wisconsin made both to go up three with 2.2 left to play. Oregon's inbound pass down the court saw the ball land in Guerrier's hands for a good look a the game-tying 3-pointer but the shot missed on the backend of the rim.

Oregon's season ended with a 61-58 loss and the Ducks finished the year with a 21-15 record.

MBB Recap: Ducks fall to Badgers in NIT quarterfinals, 61-58

The Ducks shot 33% from the FT line and lost by 3 to the Wisconsin Badgers, ending their season short of the NIT semifinals,...

It was a game that was back and forth from start to finish, and one where Oregon was unable to overcome some poor free-throw

shooting in the end.

The Ducks shot just 4-for-12 from the charity stripe, and got out-rebounded 44-35.

Oregon’s season is now over, and we will look toward the offseason and try to parse out what this team will look like next year.

Before we do all of that, here’s a closer look at how things went down on Tuesday.

Dana Altman voices frustrations over lack of support as season ends in front of a small crowd

Dana Altma isn't a person who puts his opinions out into the open very often for the public to hear. He himself admits he's not a promoter and just a basketball coach. So when Altman gave a long rant about his frustrations with his program but also the lack of support Tuesday night at Matthew Knight Arena,  it came as a genuine and surprising moment of truth and insight into Oregon's most succesful head coach in program history.

"What the heck, we should have had more people here tonight," said a self-admitted frustrated Altman after the Ducks lost at home in the NIT Quarterfinals to Wisconsin. "The guys had played hard. 3300 people, it's not good enough. If it's me, then get rid of me. If you need someone else to be a promoter, do something. 3300 is embarrassing, it really is. I'm not in a great mood, you can clearly tell."

Altman opened up the discussion about what really needed to be addressed in the last few seasons and you could tell he was somewhat uncomfortable breaking away from his traditional approach to press conferences. The Oregon men's basketball program's fan support has started to dip and it is starting to become a concern.

3300 attendance is bad, but the product on the court is what caused that low number.  Put a better product on the court and more fans will show up.

Is the school in session? That is a pathetic showing for a playoff game against a B1G team; a team Oregon has played some terrific games against. A team that brought its band to Eugene.

To me, 'not being that good' is not an excuse for poor attendance. This was a playoff game. As Altman noted 10,000 fans showed up at Liberty for the game vs Wisconsin.

This is not a good look for the 2nd money-maker sport. As Charles noted in his excellent article this week Oregon is likely in a try-out period for the next 5 years. Fans in the ACC, B12, B1G, and SEC generally show up for basketball home games. This attendance looked like that of CAL and Stanford; very Pac12/10ish.

And the game being broadcast on ESPN during a new media negotiation can do nothing to help the cause by getting ESPN on board for a significant dollar amount.

If you were one of the 3300 in attendance hats off to you.

In another excellent article this week Darren Perkins asked in Division street is in the mix when it comes to Oregon CBB. Last night's attendance likely did not encourage Ducks boosters to come with big NIL money.

This lack of support has to be examined by someone to who Rob Mullins, and Dana Altman report. What the heck more can fans ask of PK when it comes to facilities?

But does Oregon's new president who came to Eugene from Wisconsin give a whip?

Good point but are Oregon fans turning into front-runners? This was a playoff game after two solid NIT wins. If the fans cannot get excited about a home game against a B1G team that is concerning.

I don't like Altman whining about the fans when he has never once had a watchable product on the court during the regular season. I don't forget things about sports easily. I don't forget that in many of Altman's "deep runs" in March madness were after winning the Pac 12 tournament because of how badly they played in the regular season.
