Stunning Sweep: Oregon Bashes Beavers in Corvallis, 8-4!

The Ducks toyed with the Beavs in this one. Around the middle of the game, the Beavs announcing squad noticed that there were some Duck fans spread out the crowd. It was hard to miss them, as besides the orange and black, there were a bunch of empty seats...more as the game went along. As the game is going, and the previous 3, I couldn't help thinking, "The Beavs were No.3?" In a top 6 match-up, if you made a team out of the starters, it would be a split. Not here. The first team, all 9 positions, would be Ducks! In this game in particular, I give the PoG to Jacob Walsh. But, the Play of the Game goes to Carter Garate for his amazing catch of the line drive, with the bases loaded in the 3rd. - Today

Excellent analysis Solar. I really like the talent in the room. Like you, I’m looking at the team from the perspective of playing elite games. 11-1 is possible, and so is 12-0. That will take some cleaning up from the entire team. It seems to me that Moore is focused on explosive playmaking and not drilling down to efficiency. Novo tries to be what Moore and Smith have naturally-a big arm that can complete all the throws. Moga needs to work on setting his feet properly-it affects his accuracy. Smith just needs experience, and more footwork basics also. So the task is tamper their desires and show them how they each can unleash a beast of an offense. I also believe the WR is the most complete- can be better than last year. But…that will require using the strengths of each player, as in my opinion the room is ten deep. Yes I said TEN DEEP. Benson should be used on fade routes exclusively. He has that kind of speed. Dickey is a ‘window’ receiver-his knee injury killed his burst-so he gets open most in combo routes. Bryant, Moore, Perry, Mclellan, Stewart, and Moore are complete receivers-you can give them everything in the offense. Kasper will help clear space for receivers and a package needs to set him up for easy catches. Gresham is the joker. Not sure what he really is yet. But of course, Sadiq is Mr. Fabulous. I’d make every team focus so hard on him, they can’t cover anyone. Which brings me to Will Stein. My opinion is he will take steps to grow this offense, but he needs to use his analysts more to carve out the most lethal offense Oregon has seen since the Gulf Coast Offense. The talent is that solid. My question to Stein is did he learn from the Rose Bowl, because Ohio State took away every aspect of what he likes to do. I think he has the chops, but now it’s time to develop sets of plays for each individual, and compose a beautiful symphony. Some of this comes from my priorities and my philosophy, so that part really doesn’t matter. I think Stein was given more latitude his first year, and I hope DL lets him loose again. My take on the Defense is the talent along the Front 7 is spectacular. And I believe the secondary matches that talent. But the scheme lends itself to obliteration because too often scheme or formation nullifies that talent. I hope DL and Lupoi go to more of a hybrid defense. The talent is too good to waste. Why do I say that? Because I don’t see solid coverage rules, and elite offenses are finding glaring gaps in coverage. Ironically, the secondary is perhaps the most talented group that Lanning has ever fielded. Now mind you, the way the Hash marks are situated makes covering the wide side of the field extremely difficult because you can’t use the sideline on the wide side of the field to your advantage. But Ohio State did just that in the Rose Bowl. They ran a scheme that basically dared Stein to throw mostly fade routes and simplified curl routes. I don’t think Lupoi has that kind of vision, but he has the talent to execute that same strategy. Elite Coordinators will have a field day until DL and Lupoi fix their coverage rules, and utilize the linebackers in coverage more often. I hate express the above, because this defense is very, very talented. But talent alone will not stop elite talent, or elite coaching. And while I still believe the playoff format produced a lag impossible to overcome, Ohio State took every weakness we have and basically went to town at our expense. Fortunately, secondary coverage will be much tighter this year, so if Lupoi can alternate strategy and become less predictable, he will pull off a coup of epic proportions. The defense has the kind of talent to slow some very elite teams down, but the Bear Defense is not the kind of scheme to handle the open side of the field without Olympic track speed throughout the entire back seven. That goes for every football team in America. My opinion of course, but I am going to take more time to display exactly why I feel this way. I saw Georgia struggle last year, I saw Bama fall behind several times because their schemes require elite NFL talent to cover the wide range of schemes that can attack that philosophy. So this isn’t exclusive to DL and Lupoi. That said, I believe Lanning has the most talented group of players he’s ever had. They are raw, and will require experience. But OBD will only face one elite team in the regular season. Lanning’s job is to prepare his team over the course of the entire season to be prepared for the group of elite teams. And he has an elite bunch to accomplish that exact task. How? By using his analysts to actually install a practice routine to deal with elite schemes. That’s how I would do it. Lanning showed in ‘Us against them” that he knows how to attack elite teams. He didn’t elevate that to how to attack elite coaching. That’s his next step. I hope he makes that happen this year. As I’ve said before, in Dan I trust.

Fourth Straight Win Over OSU Propels Ducks Into May CORVALLIS — Freshly back in the top 10 of the national rankings, the Oregon baseball team is playing up to its potential with increasing frequency. The No. 6 Ducks won their fourth game in five days over rival Oregon State on Tuesday, dispatching of the No. 7 Beavers 8-4 at Goss Stadium. Oregon has won eight of its last 10 entering May, when the UO baseball team has a chance to fight its way to the top of the Big Ten Conference. The Ducks (31-12) will take momentum on the road to Michigan State this weekend, after coming from behind to beat the Beavers on Tuesday. "There's a lot of energy that goes into this series; it means a lot on both sides," said UO first baseman Jacob Walsh, who homered in all four games against OSU. "And the guys just kind of came together and said, you know, we haven't done well against them since I've been here. And it was like, we're done with that. We needed to get him this time." Jacob Walsh is safe stealing third... Oregon entered a weekend series against OSU last week having played .500 baseball over the previous 14 games. It's a much different energy that the team will take to the Midwest when the trip to Michigan State begins Wednesday. "It's kind of a cliché, but it's not about how you start," Walsh said. "The teams in Omaha, they play their best at the end of the year, and that's just been our focus. We know we have an outstanding lineup, we know our bullpen is lights out, our starters are great, our defense is awesome. It's just about building — getting better every single day — and I think we've been doing that and it's showing on the field." How It Happened: Walsh hit his program-record 55th career home run in the top of the first, giving the Ducks an early lead. But OSU tied it with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, then capitalized on three walks to take a 3-1 lead in the second. Ryan Cooney, Oregon's sophomore second baseball from Portland, made it 3-2 with a solo homer in the third. The Beavers put three runners on base in the bottom of the inning and again in the fourth, but they only managed to push one run across against UO reliever Ryan Featherston, whose ability to limit damage proved hugely consequential later in the game. "(UO coach Mark Wasikowski) always talks about being old, and I think that we've really taken that to heart,'" Cooney said. "Guys are taking old at-bats, being old on the mound. Really taking your breath and relaxing is what's been really important for us." Ryan Cooney enjoying his homer... Jaxon Jordan (1-0) relieved Featherston and pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth. That set the stage for him to be the winning pitcher after the Ducks dominated the late innings to come from behind. It was 4-2 entering the sixth, when Oregon loaded the bases with one out. A fielder's choice off the bat of pinch-hitter Jeffrey Heard pushed one run across, and a two-run single by Cooney gave the Ducks a 5-4 lead. "They battled back, they didn't quit," Wasikowski said. "They showed a lot of toughness with that. This is a hard place to play. It's a very good program and our guys, I was happiest with just the personality of our team, to be able to fight through some adversity and be able to play their best when they needed to tonight." After Sam Boyle got the first two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Cole Stokes came on to end the inning. An RBI double by Walsh and a run-scoring single from Drew Smith made it 7-4 at the seventh-inning stretch, and Stokes then continued his recent resurgence with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. Ryan Featherston is getting his control back... Mason Neville walked with one out in the ninth, took third on a single by Dominic Hellman and scored on a groundout by Walsh. Seth Mattox then came on with two on and none out in the bottom of the ninth and ended the threat, earning his third save of the year and second in the last five days. Notable: Oregon's last four-game win streak over Oregon State in a single season was in May 2011. … The Ducks tied their longest win streak in the series history at six games, set twice before across the 1971-72 and 1973-74 seasons. … Oregon has won consecutive games played in Corvallis for the first time since 2021. Up Next: The Ducks kick off a three-game series at Michigan State on Friday (3 p.m., B1G+).

Yep, it was posted here last Friday... Very sad for his loss... -
8-4 Oregon wins! Mason Neville walked, then Dominic Hellman drills a hit through the left infield, and the speedy Neville gets to third base. Jacob Walsh then grounds out to sacrifice, thus a score by Neville from third! Santiago Garcia walked two to start, and Seth Mattox comes in with a 2-0 count against him and throws strikes that are sliders--very hard to hit. He creates a ground ball that goes to Carter Garate at third, who steps on the bag for one out, and fires across the field to first base for a double-play! Mattox then creates another ground ball to shortstop Maddox Molony, who flips it to Ryan Cooney at second for the final out. A four-game sweep over the No. 7 team? Six straight wins over Oregon State going to back to last year...that's gotta sting Beavis.

7-4 Ducks after eight innings, as Cole Stokes walked a Beavis, than generated a grounder that turned into the third 6-4-3 double play of the game for Oregon! Santiago Garcia came in as a lefty pitcher, and covered first base for the out on the throw from Ryan Cooney. (Walsh was moving to field it, but it got past him, and scooped up by Cooney) THREE MORE OUTS FOR A FOUR GAME SWEEP!
-
7-4 Ducks after seven innings. Cole Stokes bashed the Beaver batters, and the Oregon offense got going! Mason Neville hit a line drive to bounce off the wall for a double, and then Jacob Walsh hits a double that drives to the deep right corner, and scored Neville! Walsh steals third, and then Drew Smith smashed a hit through a hole through the left infield to score Walsh. No stolen third base by Walsh, and no extra score for the Good-Guys!

5-4 Ducks! It is after six innings, and Ducks had a combination of getting a hit batter, walk and hits. The key play was Cooney singling up the middle, but the throw to first by Beavis was errant, and two Oregon runners scored! Sam Boyle pitched two outs for Oregon, and Cole Stokes got the third one.

Culture is paramount to the success of champions. Retention of talent is, IMHO, more important to success than portal acquisitions. Players who are recruited to top programs and spend their careers there are typically much more successful at getting to and staying in the NFL than program hoppers. Case in point: 26 of the 32 first-round selections in the recent NFL draft spent their college careers at their original landing spot. This is not possible without strong culture that emphasize player development. The Ducks have reached the point where they can rely on this model, stressing to in-comers that development is everything and to start grinding early, to learn from the older players, and to do anything to contribute before reaching the status (hopefully) as a starter and/or regular rotational piece. For many players at Georgia, they don't regularly see the field (except for special teams) until late in the second or the third year. But if they have embraced the "development" mantra and are ready to ball when opportunity knocks. One of the major reasons that both Michigan and OSU won nattys the past two years is that the coaching staffs had been very successful at retaining the top talents, whi, in turn were very experienced and "developed players who knew how football is supposed to be played.
