0-0 after one inning, and the Ducks left two stranded on base. Jason Reitz got the start, and the in the pregame interview....Coach Waz danced around why. It could any number of factors, such as more rest for Grinsell, a tweak with Clarke...who knows? Lurch got them put down 1-2-3 with his 95 mph fastball, and then a changeup that makes them whiff.

I will make this the official game thread, and I brought over a superb analysis from another site about our opponent, the WAC Tournament Winner, Utah Valley. No. 171 Utah Valley Wolverines (32-27, 13-11 WAC) What a strange year it was for the Wolverines. They lost easily their most talented player in program history (Daniel Dickinson, who transferred to LSU and has a plus-1.000 OPS in the SEC), their head coach (Eddie Smith, who was swept by the Ducks and missed out on the tournament in his first year at Washington) and finished their regular season losers in 16-of-20. What? None of that takes you by the shoulders and yells "tournament team!" but indeed, for the first time since 2016 and just the second time in the programs' Division 1-history, the Wolverines are tournament bound. It's an immensely fun offense. The WAC is notoriously hitter-friendly, but the Wolverines have four players with double-digit homers, seven with double-digit stolen base,s and nine qualifiers with an OPS north of .800. Their only qualifier with a sub-.800 OPS is DJ Massey, who's hitting .331. Oregon fans may hold their breath at this, but the offense reminds me a lot of the 2023 Oral Roberts team that came to Eugene and knocked the Ducks out of a College World Series berth. Not only is there talent, but the talent is experienced. Their best hitter, Mason Strong, is 22 years old. CJ Colyer has nearly 600 collegiate plate appearances and had no problem jumping between divisions. Utah transfer Landon Frei (team-high 73 RBI) was terrific, and incumbent Luke Iversen more than doubled his home run impact from his first two seasons in Orem. Corbin Kirk Things do get a little suspect on the mound, both as a result of the WAC in and of itself and UCCU Ballpark being extremely hitter-friendly. Corbin Kirk is the Wolverines' Friday starter, coming off a legendary 13-strikeout, one-run complete game against Abilene Christian in the WAC Tournament. After a terrible three-start stretch where he had an 18.00 ERA, he's allowed just five runs total over his last three. No. 2 starter Colton Kennedy is also assuredly now a fan-favorite, combining with reliever Cooper Littledike to throw a no-hitter against top-seeded Sacramento State in the WAC tournament. Still, his season-ERA is over six, but he's got the best stuff of the starting rotation. Littledike is the best pitcher in the Wolverines' bullpen, leading the team with five saves as just one of four pitchers on the roster with a sub-4.00 ERA. Carter Krosky and Ray Hernandez are viable options, but they've combined for under 30 innings between them. Carston Herman had a legendary performance of his own against UT Arlington in the WAC tournament, going six innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen, but still has a 6.02 ERA. With over 50 innings, he's clearly the most trusted bullpen option. Some combination of Garrett Miller, Alan Huerta and Landon Zaborowski are going to have to eat quality innings for Utah Valley if it wants any success in the tournament. All three have high potential, with Miller's 10.0 K/9 representing the low mark of the trio, but control flaws have hampered their run-prevention ability. Under-the-radar X-Factor: SS Dominic Longo Trivia question: how many players nationally have over 20 stolen bases and more than 10 home runs? Answer: probably more than you'd think! I was ready to search for every player before realizing that it's relatively easy, especially in smaller conferences. Then, I whittled my search down to players in the NCAA tournament before giving up on doing that because of how many there are. Still, it's not exactly a common feat by any means. But Longo has done so. The transfer from Spokane Community College has played far better at the Division 1 level than he did at SCC last year. He didn't homer once last season and had just a .709 OPS, up to .930 with ten tanks. Playing shortstop at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds with solid power and terrific speed, it's easy to see Longo getting some draft consideration when he's eligible. But he's sixth amongst team qualifiers in OPS and gets somewhat hidden within the offense. And he's got more multi-hit games (22) than no-hit games (20), so when he gets hot, he can carry the team on his shoulders. The Eugene Regional begins on Friday at 1 p.m. PST, as the second-seeded Wildcats take on the third-seeded Mustangs live on ESPN+. (Arizona won 3-2) The hosts, the top-seeded Oregon Ducks, take on the fourth-seeded Wolverines at 6 p.m. PST after the first game's conclusion.

Someone has to be the foil, why not a guy who coached 'up north'? This is the flip side of Saint Nick wanting nine conference games, as he so stated every year. Never happened. I hope I am proven wrong, but I see the Advisory Committee and the B1G/SEC detente as nothing but horse spit. The SEC will stay at 8 conference games and be lauded for doing so because the SEC was the Power 2 conference that wanted PO fairness. BTW, there is NOTHING in the B1G proposal that would prevent the SEC from scoring an at-large bid in addition to the 4 teams with guaranteed PO spots. No wonder Sankey supported straight seeding. He darn well knew that with 16 teams, 11 at large and straight seeding, the SEC would have had six teams in the PO in 2024-25. If the format was 5-11 last season, he would have screamed to the high heavens, along with his mates at ESPN, if 3-loss Illinois got in over Bama, Ole Miss, or South Carolina. I feel like I felt when the Pac-12 media deal turned out to be a bunch of tripe. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

Posted by Jon Joseph: Not So Fast! It looks like the SEC is ready to hand Tony Petitti a B1G in-your-face. The SEC, at the end of its spring meetings, made certain to let everyone know that the 8 regular-season games in the SEC Just Mean More. For the first time (RIGHT?) Greg Sankey found enlightenment. 6 SEC teams in the Committee's top 16 last season, including 3-loss Bama, Ole Miss, and South Carolina, would have made a 16-team PO field. Thank goodness someone brought this to Greg's attention. On the field, a 4-loss Michigan team with many starters sitting out defeated an all-hands-on-deck Bama team in its bowl game. Ditto for 3-loss Illinois taking out 3-loss South Carolina. Nothing to see here, move right along. S(ec)SDD. We're the best, we only need to play 8 regular-season games to prove it. The Committee? The Committee's spot-on rankings were negated by the field only having 12 teams. We need a 16-team PO! We trust the Committee will continue to recognize that our teams' 3 losses are superior to 2 losses everywhere else. We have paid attention to our friends in the ACC and the B12. Five conference champions and 11 at-large teams is the PO format we need; it's the Fairer Way, No Doubt! I never fell for the B1G/SEC detente. You could SEC this possible rope-a-dope coming from as far away as Minneapolis is from Destin, Florida, site of the SEC's annual beach retreat. The Michigan at Oklahoma Week 2 game will kick off at 7:30 EST on ABC. Disney does all it can to aid its SEC partner, while Fox is a B1G Mickey Mouse. However, Fox agreed to move the Texas/ Ohio State game to 7:30 Sunday night of Week 1 instead of Noon on Saturday. Texas vetoed the game time move. The Texas athletic director noted that it would give Texas a short week before its next game and that on Sunday, he goes to church. The Longhorns' Week 2 opponent? San Jose State. We'll see how this plays out, but I expect the SEC will stay at 8 regular season games, and that a possible B1G vs. SEC football challenge was just part of the S(ec)ucker Punch. This could be B1G. Greg Sankey reacts to report Big Ten wants to press SEC to expand to 9-game conference schedule - On3 WWW.ON3.COM SEC commissioner Greg Sankey addressed a report that the Big Ten wants the SEC to move to a nine-game conference slate. The B1G, supposedly, would consider a PO format of 5-11, the 5 highest ranked conference champs are in the field and seeded as ranked with 11 at-large teams, IF the SEC agrees to play nine regular season games. This makes sense. 8 regular-season games allow SEC teams to schedule their way out of a loss. Not every team in the SEC does this. Florida plays Miami and FSU OOC in 2025. In 2024, UGA played Clemson and Georgia Tech. LSU opens the season on the road at Clemson. The other OOC games are in Baton Rouge against LA Tech, Southeast Louisiana, and Western Kentucky. The W KY game will be played on the penultimate Saturday of the regular season, when B1G teams will be playing a conference opponent. Playing Purdue is more difficult than playing W KY. Especially if West Coast teams have to travel to Purdue. In addition to nine regular-season games, the majority of B1G teams play a P4 opponent OOC. However, Ohio State played 3 G5 opponents OOC last season, and Michigan did the same in 2023. In 2025, Penn State has three cupcakes scheduled OOC, including FCS Villanova. (And then takes a week off before OBD comes to town ) (The B1G is not terribly concerned about the ACC playing eight regular-season games. ) The six SEC teams that finished in the committee's top 16 in 2024, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss, and South Carolina, could have had one additional conference game loss. And in theory, No. 8 Indiana could have played Valpariso instead of Ohio State to finish 11-1. Not ranked in the top 16, Illinois, could have avoided a trip to Eugene with a game against Eastern Illinois, and be in the playoff with a record of 10-2. It will be interesting to see how the future PO format unfolds.
