Commissioner George Kliavkoff has some moxie doesn't he?   Interesting comments by Nate Costa about Butterfield....

    https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-43

The NCAA is getting a new boss. Mark Emmert announced he’s leaving the post after spending 12 years carefully running the entity in circles. He’ll stay on the job until June 2023 or whenever the NCAA hires his replacement. Sports Illustrated called Emmert a “calamitous captain.” The New York Times termed his impending exit “stormy.”

Yahoo columnist Dan Wetzel wrote that Emmert’s tenure was marked with “inertia, ineffectiveness and incompetence.”

Yup. But Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff may have best summarized the scene with a tweet on Tuesday night. Wrote Kliavkoff: “As the Wizard of Westwood once said…” and the commissioner posted a John Wooden quote that read, “Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.”

It was more scalpel than sledgehammer. But Kliavkoff got his point across beautifully.

Emmert, 69, got a contract extension by his Board of Governors a year ago. It was supposed to carry him through 2025. Make no mistake, this was a calculated and shove out the door by the NCAA. It couldn’t afford to wait a day longer.

Emmert will be treated like a piñata in the coming months. He deserves it. His failure to lead has left the NCAA an eroded mess. Athletic directors have been crying for new leadership for years. They’re now looking to federal lawmakers for help in trying to reel in a name, image, likeness dynamic that has pitted wealthy booster groups against each other, buying high school talent on the open market.

The NCAA members had to move on Emmert. He couldn’t lead. Nobody would follow him anymore if he tried. These times call for a massive overhaul of major college athletics. The NCAA needs to figure out what it wants to be.

The scene was laughable earlier this month when Emmert arrived at the men’s NCAA Tournament Final Four. Kansas won the title and cut down the nets, all while still being under investigation by the NCAA for major infractions that should have been settled long ago.

Here’s another one — Portland State and the University of Oregon both fall under the authority of the NCAA. They play each other at times in college football. PSU will report approximately $15 million in athletic department expenses in the next fiscal year amid questions about its future. Oregon will spend in excess of $100 million and have a booster collective helping land six and seven-figure endorsement packages for its athletes.

These two animals are not the same. Neither are McNeese State and LSU. We all can plainly see the separation. So why do the “haves” and “have-nots” still operate under the same section of the NCAA handbook?

We’re at a critical juncture in NCAA history. Emmert’s replacement doesn’t have to come from the world of college athletics but that person needs to understand it. The hire will also need to be a non-traditional thinker. The times demand it. The NCAA has drifted woefully out of touch with college athletes and I fear that if the entity doesn’t experience a quick correction it will never find its way back.

I like that Kliavkoff fired a public brush-back pitch at the NCAA on Tuesday. He’s got some moxie. If Kliavkoff weren’t so new on the job in the Pac-12 I’d wonder if he were the NCAA’s solution. “King George” sees the benefit of rallying people around the notion of change and college athletics desperately needs it.

Jennifer Cohen, the Washington athletic director, told me last summer that she was concerned about the direction of the NCAA. Oregon State AD Scott Barnes echoed that in a conversation with me a week ago at the Beavers’ spring game. Washington State’s Pat Chun said he believes it will take congressional intervention to fix college sports. None of what we’re seeing here is a surprise to anyone who is paying attention. Except maybe Emmert’s timeline, which feels unnecessarily extended.

    He’s gone?

    But still hanging around?

Emmert is paid $51,923 a week — A WEEK — in salary. Like Wooden said… failure isn’t bad by itself. But if you don’t change amid failure, you haven’t got a chance

DEFENSIVE TAKE: Former Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti was at the Ducks’ spring football game calling the game for the Pac-12 network. He told me he thinks UO quarterback Bo Nix will start the season opener at Georgia, but he’s not ready to hand Ty Thompson the role of No. 2 quarterback. In fact, Aliotti ranked the performances of the Oregon spring game like this:

    1.  Bo Nix

    2.  Jay Butterfield

    3.  Ty Thompson

Keep an eye on that race. Former Oregon Assistant Nate Costa told me that he’s a big fan of Butterfield, too.

Said Costa: “He’s the son of a coach. He understands offense. I think he also has a photographic memory and can kind of build plays in his head and he processes information really well. What Ty has in arm strength Jay has in accuracy and ball placement… I think he’s someone players gravitate towards. He’s one of those guys you don’t notice in years one, two, three but in years four and five you say, ‘Oh my gosh, he’s draft-able.”

    More good stuff…

    • I also asked Aliotti for his NFL Draft analysis of Kayvon Thibodeaux. Aliotti said he likes Thibodeaux’s first step and pass rushing ability but said, “I thought he was very, very disruptive but there were other games where he disappeared. To be an elite guy you have to show up every weekend. Good player. He’ll go early because of his pass rush skills but to me there are a few holes.”

Mike Yam of the NFL Network is a big fan of Thibodeaux and thinks he’ll be a star at the next level. Yam will join me today on the statewide radio show at 4 p.m. PT today. Tune into 750-AM in Portland or listen in Eugene (1050-AM), Klamath Falls (960-AM) and Roseburg (1490-AM). Or you can stream the show live 3p-6p weekdays

    • Don’t be surprised when Washington State president Kirk Schulz emerges as a candidate for the NCAA president job. Schulz is smart, understands sports, and would be a breath of fresh air. There is one problem out of his control, though. Outgoing president Mark Emmert came to the NCAA from the University of Washington. Would the NCAA turn to the Pacific Northwest twice?

So your telling me Emmert was being paid 56, thousand a week? That's interesting to say the least. I can't fathom the NCAA paying that guy even 5000 thousand a week. That is ridiculous at best. That tells me that money goes everywhere everyday and lots of it to people who shouldn't be getting that big a pay day. People starving homeless and that clueless wonder makes that kind of money. I'm seriously so close to just making better use of my time with any sports period.

You never know.  If y'all remember Dennis Dixon, he had a lot of talent and just wasn't putting it together.   He put a lot of extra time in the off season and it suddenly clicked for him and he became one of the best players in college football.   Ty has time and the right attitude so with some more experience the light bulb may suddenly turn on for him.   I'm rooting for the guy.

It all clicked for Dennis after he played Baseball that Summer. Belotti didn't want him to but it helped him open up his game. Man if he doesn't hurt his knee we probably win our first Natty! So close for something to get in the way and especially injury's. Unfortunately they are part of the game and that's why Oregon needs to recruit like Georgia does. Thompson needs to just keep working and stay hungry, humble and honest with himself. He could be great yet he needs to progress or he will get left behind.

The old is finally out and the people that want to be here will be given the chance to step up and win their position.

This should be Oregon's new slogan and it's not like it's new or anything. Just Do It!

Yeah I still cannot wrap my head around him going to Arizona even after Mario left. These guys cannot for the life of themselves understand how bad a HC Mario really is. Lanning to me is the real deal and especially his game plan for BAMA in the championship game was legit.

He also is comfortable enough in his own skin to do that and then still come west and win recruiting battles. So lets just say Mario leaving and Dan the Man being hired will pay huge dividends starting this fall. Enough talent right now for Oregon to win 11 games with the right QB.

The way he gets away from LSU rushers at 3:50, and the sweet lofting passes at 5:40Try,...try to watch that and not get excited!

And this was only from 2021...brought to us courtesy of "Nevada Dawg," and I thank him!

Yeah who would have thought after that huge win in the shoe that things would have ended the way they did. I just didn't see AB being the guy ever after the Stanford debaucle. That team sucked and any decent QB should have been capable of beating them with all that talent. Thanks Fishduck for I love it when your excited for a QB. It just tells me we must be loaded because I still think Dillingham likes what he see's in Thompson. Either way I believe we have a 11-1 team whoever plays QB.

I know at Florida for example fans can contribute a minimum of $9.99 up to $999.99. Perhaps there is a state  cap on what an individual can contribute? Or perhaps, some king of 301(c) charitable cap?

Regardless, to help Ducks recruiting I'd like to contribute a modest and not a Texas A+M-like sum.

Appreciate any information I can get on this.

I'm sorry if I don't understand  what your asking, but if your asking people us regular joe's to give money to players I would say HECK NO. That would be the last string for me. Just my opinion but no way would I ever contribute one dime of my money to this. Phil Knight is like a 47 Billion Dollar man so let him give all the money. I can't see him beating out some of the highly rated RBs on that roster unless they just don't give their all. Kind of like a certain 5 star DE that just left Oregon for the NFL who if he would of gave his all like Travis I'm quite sure he could of been the number 1 pick in Aprils draft. Good ideas Dave and yes I would be thrilled to see our new staff in action because in the long run I feel these young coaches are not just good their all hard working Men. My only issue with the spring game is I certainly do not want to see " STAR " players getting carted off the field or limping off the field. Honestly I'd prefer to see Justin Flowe play a 14 game season is you know what I mean.

Besides with this crazy pay for play going on I just don't see CF succeeding very much longer. They have officially ruined this Game with paying players as if they deserve more free stuff besides a free education with a chance to play in the NFL. Honestly I'm just about done with all College sports.

Or there is some problem with the defense where those big defensive linemen don't get to thrive. This last year KT's struggles could mostly be linked to a secondary that always gave an out route to the QB so KT never had the time to really get after the QB because the ball would be long gone before he could get there.

Sorry Dave that guy should have been better regardless of the secondary. Also we've all heard about the stuff that came out of his mouth which was very eye opening. He has talent yet he showed us that he really didn't bring it all the time and I and that's just me was very dissapointed in his play.

Both those Utah games were extremely hard to watch from a team way more talented. Also he quit on his team when he wouldn't play in the ALAMO Bowl. The guy was getting paid to play. I will not root for him ever because i just can't root for quiters. Not my MO. Would you want a guy like that in your fox hole?

And what happens if Bo isn't named starter? There are so many what ifs, that it is hard to even begin to put the variables together. All I hope is we have a solid starter and a back-up who is ready to take over. I also want to see a starter who has upside over the next few years.

Nix has two years to play, but will he improve over the next two years. I could see both Ty and Jay leaving if it looks like another two years sitting on the bench.  This is going to be a tricky needle to thread. We are going to want to see our qb thread the needle on the field. We are also going to want our coaches to thread the needle on picking the right guy, and having a strong back-up. I would say this is probably the most difficult decision I have seen at Oregon in a while.

All I can say is all the qb's better be working hard right now. Another variable is working hard down south, without the Oregon receivers may not be the smart way to work hard. The shrewd qb is working with his receivers and not on spring break away from the program. Staged practice < Fun practice with your teammates.

If Bo isn't the starter then that means Thompson to me will be primed for a huge season. That will be a huge relief from last years terrible season. I mean we beat OS in the shoe then everything fell apart. Not gonna be the case this year as I expect Oregon to beat everyone except Georgia.

  14. I've It's called read on other sites that Oregon next year should be good enough to be a 4 seed and I spit up some pretty good wine. This team this year had the best talent ever assembled that clearly should still be playing. Makes perfectly good sense what coach A said about nobody was there early or left late. If that doesn't open up these players eyes then their all sleep walking. Look at the players coming in next year two top 20 players so lets hope they got work ethic. As far as Dana saying he thinks there will be transfers and even mentioned Bittle then he's obviously being clear as day.

So maybe Mr Bittle was a little over rated or doesn't like working a whole lot when he should because that statement Altman made was crystal clear to me. Seems as there was a little bit of that on the lady's team also. First the Football team the the BB teams. WOW maybe they were all hanging out together a little to much. It was to say the least a very odd year for two of Oregon's top sports program. To me this " CODDELING " stuff is over rated or hey take a time out. No this is about a whole lot of money now and way to much than just the free DEGREE they are getting.

I'm finally getting turned off by this and the rich greed that goes with it. I mean look at the whole world and the crazy going on and these players are getting 8 million dollar's to play for Tennessee? Then watch them when they say I don't want to play because I've got a hang nail, or my leg hurts, or I'm not gonna play because were playing Stony Brook.

To me, Altman sounds frustrated with his teams work ethic. It sounds to me that the hard work and discipline required to play consistently at a high level as a team under his coaching style was amiss.

Change will be necessary. What that entails is a big question.

Honestly I feel really sorry for Coach that these players couldn't come together and play like he wanted them to. Altman is a great HC and look at the talent alone for just next years class and more than likely 3 Five star players who are all at the top at their respective positions. I'm thinking though he really misses his Assistant from the year before who led them in defensive team play. So something is quite wrong with this current roster in playing team ball and certainly doesn't help that Richardson wasn't available. Still no excuses for the players. SAD. Kind of feels like the Football season as in a huge let down. This wasn't on Altman though.

Once again in 2021 we watched 2 teams from the southeastern part of the country play for the title. This with Clemson (an SEC school masquerading as an ACC school) missing the playoff for the 1st time in 6 seasons.

Georgia's recruiting budget is 3x that of Oregon's recruiting budget. Oregon's recruiting budget is on par with that of Vanderbilt.

Dean and Kendrick, both 5☆, didn't do drills at the combine. Dean, Walker, Wyatt and Davis could all go in the first round with Tindall, Walker and Cine soon after. Lanning and crew took kids with varying levels of raw talent and developed them into NFL caliber players. I've got to believe that if they could do it there, they can do it here.

I mean Mario I don't believe was bringing in this type of talent this early or for that matter never all in the same day or weekend. giphy.gif

Every time I open up about this BB Team on whatever site and I see they lost to Washington, WSU teams they should have beaten soundly I just can't see this team winning the PAC 12 Tourney. I look at this Roster and Dana has all the ingredients on his team to succeed and they should have not lost many regular season games at all. So it just goes to show you talent alone isn't gonna get it done and I'm sure inside he's racking his brain trying to figure out why this team could go down to the LA area and beat both USC and UCLA and then lose to teams they shouldn't have.

I mean do I really believe they can't win the tourney? Well with Dana as the HC we've seen the proof and to me it's insane to think that this roster is this bad, or excuse me doesn't seem to play hard enough to beat lesser teams with way lesser talent. Its like the Football team this year and we saw what the real issues were and I do believe most of that insanity was on the OLD HC that couldn't get back to Miami fast enough. That was all on him being a HC that thought he was the reason they won at all. Thank goodness we know Dana's isn't like that and he's a great HC in my opinion.

We've seen him do more with way less and those teams just played hard most nights. Go Ducks as obviously we want you guys to succeed and you guys have enough talent to not only win the Pac tourney and also talented enough to go far in the Big tourney.

We would, along with WSU, have the easiest schedule out of all those matchups. The beavs are a once in a blue moon program, and the dawgs are merely intimidating preseason with the pundits never really understanding the last couple decades of history. I do agree we would need to be guaranteed at least one to two cali schools each season to fill out the 8 game schedule.

I think going forward we should try and schedule Hawaii every other year too. The recruiting connections from the islands needs to continue. Playing a game there keeps us in the other islands consciousness too. American Samoa needs to know we are a poly friendly program! We should then try and travel around the south and midwest on occasion to fill out our schedule, or have those programs come to Autzen. Scheduling should really look at recruiting as the number 1 priority.

Not a fan of Notre Dame either but for a school with less than 9,000 students they have an amazingly strong fanbase. With the Catholic connection along with the Irish connection the school has a massive wannabe fanbase. They actually have a better tv deal than Larry could have ever dreamed of creating.

Lets be honest with Larry, he was a perfect fit for the PAC 12 because for some odd reason they never checked on Larry making the conference legit. He was just making a huge payday for himself. He was a fraud from Harvard as who would have ever thunk it.
