Even come 2024 there will be a good chance that the Pac-10 will have 40% of its member teams preseason ranked and ranked at season's end In 2023 the majority of Pac-10 schools will play 10 or more games versus P5 teams. This season, only 2 SEC teams play 10 or more games vs the P5, Florida, and South Carolina. Will we continue to see the football playoff committee's Pavlovian love of the SEC and Ohio State in particular? The SEC based on the on-field performance at least has an argument to stay at 8 conference games but the ACC? And someone best calls out Notre Dame for playing 12 games while all conference champs will play 13 games. It will be frustrating if ND keeps a 2nd Pac team out of the playoffs.

As John Smith said on media day he believes the conference is as deep QB-wise and top-to-bottom team-wise as it has ever been.

My Better Angels require this. Like all things in this life, football is a winnowing process. Not everyone who plays football will get a trophy in the real sense of the word, 'trophy.' I played D3 football and not at the Mount Union or Wisconsin-Whitewater level. If you showed up you were on the roster. Wednesday was 'Lab Day' for Bio, Chem, and Physics. If a lab conflicted with practice you went to the lab, no questions asked, and no demotion from your position on the team. Football was more like rugby. Post-game, many of the opposition who we knew from high school, stuck around for a party and a kegger or three. Of course, some courses were more difficult than others but there was no Football major and the accompanying 'gut' courses. NIL? Every so often I was handed a free pitcher of draft beer at Will's Rustic Tavern. More often after hockey games where I played on very good teams and not football where I played on dogmeat teams. But I would not have traded the fun and the camaraderie with my teammates for anything. P5 football? An entirely different ball game and a big business at that. No program is paying a coach multi-millions of dollars for being kind to his players. People do not show up to watch to watch P5 football players flounder (except perhaps at Faber College) on the field. CU from averaging 17,000 fans a game has sold out its season ticket allotment. Deion or any other coach inheriting the roster he did and under today's rules, or lack thereof, would not attempt to turn chicken spit into chicken salad. On the other hand, there are guys like J Smith who given the time can turn things around. But J Smith today is the unfortunate exception to the rule. To reiterate, unlike guys cut in the NFL the CU players who were 'cut' can continue at CU with a full ride. This is a far better deal than most folks find when they are 'cut' in life. That does not make what Deion has done righteous but IMO it certainly eases the pain.

It impacts the academic status and the ranking of a given university by Forbes and others. For academicians in the B1G and the Pac-12/10, the AAU ranking matters a great deal. Boise State is not a 'selective university.' It has far more acceptances per applicant than a top-drawer university. And IMO, the blue field is a gimmick designed to give Boise more of a home-field advantage. There is no way that 8 Pac-10 schools would vote to add on Boise and there is also no way that a media company would insist on the Pac-10 adding Boise and the Boise, Idaho market.

CFN is out with its prediction of the teams that will play in their conference champ games and a win/loss prediction for every game on the 2023 schedule. Pete Fiutak at CFN always comes early with these predictions but on many occasions, his predictions, not necessarily game-by-game, but the teams playing for conference titles have come to fruition. A few thoughts in regard to Pete's projections. ACC - Clemson vs Pitt. I have no beef here but wanted to point out that CFN has Miami and Mari finishing in 5th place. Going bowling in 2023 would be a step up AAC - Love for SMU here with the Ponies predicted to play in the title game. B12 - The champ game nightmare for our B12 'buddies.' Texas vs Oklahoma in the champ game. I'm hoping that Pete is spot-on here. B1G - Michigan plays Wisconsin for the B1G title but with Michigan going 12-1 and Ohio State 11-1 both would be looking good for a spot in the final Final 4. If wishes were Cougars Wazzu will take down Wisconsin back-to-back. Mountain West - Some love for SDSU here with the Aztecs playing Boise for the title. I would love it if SDSU defeats UCLA at the Dragon. And the Bruins best watch out against Coastal Carolina and stud QB Grayson McCall. SEC - Georgia vs Alabama with Georgia coming in 11-1 and Bama at 10-2. And Georgia taking a loss at home vs the Ole Kiffins. Not so fast friend Pete. Great take. I'd add Flowe. And all the best to the young man who was and remains a great Duck but Sewell, who I think was a 4* recruit, was a better fit for the game when thumping meant more than versatility. As Charles notes, you need 'freaks' to play DL's (and Kirby Smart's) style of D. The portal gives you a look at a player vs college-level competition. Most 5* deserve the ranking, but some of these guys will not be able to transition from HS to big-time CFB.

Thanks, ND. Sending players on to the League makes a big difference. And there is no doubt that the SEC is the best at sending players to the NFL. THIS is tough to recruit against.

Can't win 'em all. But Dan has a whole lot of skin in the game and will get his share of quality recruits. Making the final Final 4 would help but what also helps UGA and other SEC teams is the number of players they send to the NFL. A fact that's hard to overcome.

College Football Live on today's show took a deep dive into Prime Time's destruction and rebuild of the CU roster. The faint of heart may want to avoid looking at this pile of garbage. 2022 - Colorado went 1-11 with its lone win coming against Colorado State. Colorado drew approximately 17,000 fans to Folsom Field for its home games. A few of Colorado's 2022 CFB Rankings out of 131 P5/G5 ranked teams. Points Per Game - Offense - 127 / Defense - 127 Yards Per Play - Offense - 125 / Defense - 130 Total QBR - Offense - 130 - / Defense - 130 Points surrendered in the last 6 games - 42, 42, 49, 54, 53 (some improvement at least), and 63 given up to the Utes with Rising taking a seat in for the entire 2nd half. This garbage reminds me of a quote from Oregon graduate John McKay in a post-game presser after his Tampa Bay Bucs team was, yet again, destroyed. Mike, great take. But with 9 B1G conference games plus Notre Dame on the schedule, I don't see SC anxious to play Oregon. Ditto UCLA with Michigan as one of the Bruins permanent scheduling partners. Yes, sending SC would 3 defeats in the conference would be delicious. But with SC playing Utah at home (the week after the trip to ND which could help the Utes) and UW at home I see Troy going at least 1-1 in the two games. Totally agree that the Pac-12/10 does a terrible job in regard to marketing the conference.

Preferably AAU membership. What SMU and SDSU have that Boise does not are being located in major media markets and being competitive in CBB and other sports. And Boise as the little guy that could has lost a lot of its luster. IMO, Fresno, and UNLV both make more sense than Boise but again, for Pac Prez AAU membership matters. ASU recently joined the AAU club.
