That would really muddy the water.
It is unrealistic to think that every Division 1 team is financially capable of competing at an elite level in football, basketball, and Olympic sports. NIL is a game changer, and creates a huge void between the haves, and have nots.
NIL is not going away, any interference will be challenged in court.
If they truly want to save Olympic sport competition at the college level, Universities need to have the financial ability to provide elite level training and facilities in those sports. Sprinkle in a few more Universities, and two mega conferences probably achieves that financial viability.
The biggest hurdles are the BIG and SEC agreeing on anything, and then getting the media networks to work together.

I think our roster got down to 8 healthy players this year. Nobody wins in the BIG with 8 players.
I am not adverse to change, but any decision should include a discussion with coaches, players, and key boosters, to determine if a change of direction is wanted, or needed.

Interesting discussion taking place. It is being broadcast live at this moment from the White House. If you miss it, it may be available on You Tube.
NIL, problems with the transfer portal, and the impact NIL has on other sports is being discussed.
Not reporting, just letting everyone know it is currently available.
I checked…it is on You Tube.

Phil Knight’s memoir “Shoe Dog” is a very good read. Anyone involved with trying to grow any business would benefit from reading it.
My office was very close to Nike’s offices before they moved to their current headquarters. There was a restaurant/bar nearby that I would sometimes run into their employees, and ran into a few that were celebrating just after Jordan had signed.
I don’t think any of them ever imagined the long term impact it would have on the Company at that moment.

I have a player that should in everybody’s glory day discussion…in 2002 Oregon Hall of Famer blows up the UCLA center, and blocks an extra point attempt.
Ducks go on to win 31 - 30.
Dude was a beast….any guesses?
Wasn’t sure if this is the game referenced earlier. I don’t think he ran off the field waving his finger….

2009 season had Arizona, Oregon, OSU, and Stanford still in the Rose Bowl race with two games yet to be played.
The come from behind win against a Nick Foles led Arizona (students jumping out of stands ready to celebrate), Masoli hits Ed Dickson with 8 seconds left, and Ducks win in overtime.
That game sets the table for the Civil War…winner goes to Rose Bowl.
Both of those wins in 2009 were iconic.

Not really referring to the actual games.
Oregon’s sports budget was slightly in the black with just over $185 million in revenue. Costs and revenue increased around $15 million from 2024 to 2025, and they just added another $20 million in NIL costs for this year.
There is a breaking point for Oregon sports at some point.

I think the conferences will end up opting for a format that generates the most revenue, and college football fans, and sports bettors, will watch.
I really don’t care which format, but reserve the right to critique.
A playoff bracket has only one team move beyond the bracket. Does anybody think a 16 seed in basketball will win a championship? However, an 8 seed in football, beating a 1 seed would be glorious, as long as your team is not that top seed.
The media will battle for the rights to broadcast future CFP games, media revenues increase, which automatically increases NIL expenditures, and ticket prices spiral in order to stay “competitive “.
Don’t get me wrong, it is great entertainment, but it does feel dirty in so many ways.

Watched Kenyon Barner’s epic day at the Coliseum sitting in the middle of SUC fans at around the 30 yard line. He ended the day with 321 yards rushing, and 5 touchdowns.
One of the greatest performances in Duck history.
I remember hearing “ sit down zero” about 10 times from the surrounding crowd. By the end, they all had left.

53 minutes ago, Jon Joseph said: The cost of fielding varsity college programs is unsustainable. But can this problem be fixed?
Agreed.
NIL Money is being tossed at high school kids, and the amount is increasing at hyper-inflation rates. Anytime costs double in just a few years there are problems that need to be addressed for the long-term well being of the sport.
As far as a full time GM for men’s basketball. The team has an executive director/assistant coach, and 4 assistant coaches. If you include DA, that is 6 people managing a roster of 16 to 18 players.
Although, I have know idea of what an executive director does for the team.

10 hours ago, Charles Fischer said: It's a relationship business."
Without reading the article, success relies heavily on developing and nurturing relationships.
From what I can tell, DL is genuine in developing his relationships with both coaches, and players. As a leader and recruiter, DL has to create a clear vision of goals, and expectations, and a path for everyone to achieve those goals. Add in an infectious personality that people are drawn towards.
Today, money buys a team, developing relationships creates family, and families will work, and fight for each other. That is my quick assessment of what DL is all about.
Good coach, that has an opportunity to be the GOAT at Oregon.

24 minutes ago, Jon Joseph said: The GMs noted that 60% plus of transfer transactions were done deals before the players entered the portal.
Is there a big gray area that can be used by “agents” to shop their player to other teams?
We all know that if there is an inch of wiggle room, they will take a mile. Until someone is actually punished, it will continue.
Seems like a monetary penalty would need to be huge to make it less appealing to the elite level boosters.

6 hours ago, Chas Man said: I recall the season my brother and I shared great joy when Oregon made it to the Poulon Weed Eater Bowl and pulled out a last minute win over Tulsa. We felt as though the holiday season had a special magic. Even though the two playoff losses were painful in the moment, I can be nothing but grateful for the rise in talent, performance, entertainment, and wins over our hated rivals that Dan Lanning has brought to Eugene.
These are the best of times for this Duck fan!
Agreed.
It took 6 long years after the infamous “83 toilet bowl game” to finally muster enough wins to qualify for that bowl game. It put an end to the 26 year drought of sitting at home with no invites.
They went 2-9 twice when I was at U of O. But, the rodents were one of the wins both times. Not the greatest year when that is what you hang your hat on for the highlight of your season.
Two sports that must be watched live when you have the time, college football rivalry games, and baseball. The TV just doesn’t do either game justice.
Will Ducks QB Akili Smith Jr. Find Opening in a Crowded Room?
in Our Beloved Ducks
Too early to tell…
We all know that backup QBs can be just one play from being a starter. Junior probably needs to be #2 on the depth chart this spring, and that means Raiola is still in recovery mode.
It would be a great story if he rises through the ranks to be a starter for the Ducks, but realistically, 2027 would be the year he has a solid chance to play extended minutes.
For the moment, I will just enjoy having depth at QB. The players will sort themselves out.
