  1. Defensive line stay put unless a generational player available. Running backs and safeties or corners are a somewhat different story. Everything changes if we have exodus of key players in the upcoming portal. Dan Lanning has been among the best in keeping the players they are recruiting and developing. I would not want to see the LOVE and camaraderie going around that room disturbed. In any case Dan Lanning knows best.
  2. Will our 5 star wide receiver from Texas A&M be 6th, 7th, or maybe 8th best wide receiver?
  3. Can we go to Oregon Sports and read anything but bad news about our Duck girls ? No, Graves got basically a walk on with Sabrina and a talented group surrounded her. How many wonderful players came after those star studded years only to disappear into the night like a wisp that really did not exist ? The answer is many, too many. How is it possible to turn a class of multiple 5 star athletes into a proving ground for other schools and coaches to rape and pillage ? Easy you say. It must be because it continues with one star after another being attracted to the light only to find out that the light is the brand and the intensity of that light which was the Sabrina group is fading rapidly. How long must we endure the tarnishing of the brand ? It's time to cut out the cancer before it consumes all that it touches. The real question might be "Does the cancer come from the top?" He's ruined track and field. Now it's WBB. What happens when our should be hall of famer MBB coach is no longer or he errs with Dan Lanning ? $6,000,000 is some real money. $1,500,000 is like a get out of jail card in this case. Cut the cord now ! GO DUCKS !
  4. Caitlan Clark is a scoring machine. She recently broke Pete Maravich's all time basketball scoring record. What a feat. She's played in 130 plus games in her career. Pistol Pete played on only 83 games in his college career at LSU. One can only imagine what his totals would have been if they had had a 3 point play when Maravich was in college. There is probably some overlay of his potential 3 point shots. Anyone have it? No one has 26 triple doubles in men's or women's college but Sabrina. The closest I believe was 12. No wbb player in history has more than 2000 points (she had more than 2500), 1000 rebounds, and 1000 assists. She had more than 500 steals as well. There are lots of reasons to love this girl. She is the best wbb player of all time , maybe men as well coming from a Duck perspective.
  5. While our host and I are huge baseball fans, nothing except Duck football, excites me more than Track and Field. It is individual excellence personified. Wow, have we had champions and championships. Thirty two national championships and counting, dozens of Pac championships, I hope we don't have to wait too long for more. We lost a terrific coach to the fuskies and dismissed a proven winner over social issues. Since then we have fallen on almost mediocrity. This is not good treatment for a wonderful track athlete and our great benefactor, Uncle Phil. Anybody know what the issues are? My mind and body were almost in a frenzy as I watched Dyrol Burleson et al cross the finish line in a one two three sweep in the mile at Los Angelas on the way to a swamping of perennial champions, USC. That group along with Olympic throwers and runners were on their way to the first of many NCAA championships. I sat in the stands as I watched our javelin guys headed by Les Tipton throw that spear so it disappeared above the stadium roof only to come down in another one two three finish to the roar of the crowd clinching the national championship. Another one two three finish in the high hurdles led by the great hurdler, Jerry Tarr followed by fellow future NFL football players Mike Gaechter and Mel Renfro perhaps the greatest athlete in the history of Oregon was the pinnacle of excitement. Who can ever forget the gutty controversial Steve Prefontaine who won again and again in every meet at Hayword and elsewhere to the roars of the crowds. Steve was from my sometimes hometown. He actually agreed to sell some of my products after he sold me radio advertising on one of his summer jobs. Where oh where have you gone you runners and jumpers and throwers? Come back soon!
  6. Oh so sweet to watch Chip's teams operate at Oregon. The fact that he inherited a boatload of talent from a highly successful head coach, Mike Bellotti doesn't deter those memories. Had Mike stayed for one more year he would have been the winningest coach in Pac 10 or 12 history, not Terry Donahue. Bellotti was pushed upstairs to AD to make room for Chip who was left with a stable of terrific players and assistant coaches. His biggest recruiting success, LaMichael James, was tainted and led to an investigation and slight punishment for the University, but possible big problems for Chip. These issues plus his hatred for recruiting along with needing to compete with his highly successful brothers on Wall Street made the jump to the pros an easy decision. Too bad he found out the hard way the pros had minds of their own. Chip's annual foray into the jungles of Africa for three weeks where he brought doctors and nurses on his own dime very needy areas where those services were lacking still sets him aside despite his personality from most all others. I hope OSU scores 60 points a game but none against Oregon. Best of luck Chip, thanks for the memories!
  7. Mr Whitty once again has displayed his research capability. It's a bit dizzying to me but I'm a common man. The problem is the NCAA hasn't been able to provide the necessary leadership and control since the professional football days of Hugh McElhaney Let's let the market decide. Does anybody wish Oregon had fewer scholarships to offer young men, lesser facilities to attract top talent,( both students and coaches); fewer wins in their column, money to spread around to other sports, fewer opportunities to watch our beloved Ducks, etc etc etc.? Let's leave well enough alone. More regulation is not the answer. Do we want a higher power telling us how many 4 stars we can have, and how much of our revenue should be shared with the beavers. I don't think so !
  8. "Then there would be a lot of time and money saved" sounds a conclusion in the article (below) that is closing in on the kill, and I feel is to the detriment of college athletics. The protections afforded us are the university presidents and feckless government officials particularly Congress. To say " the college athlete brings nothing in the way of equipment to the workplace" is an assertion I cannot agree with. All they bring to the job is the equipment their body. The stronger and faster, the higher the rating is placed on that equipment. They even bring a brain, of which is in high demand with the newer complicated offenses and defenses. The athlete has total say, if they bring the right body. It's called merit. Let the powers that be start a minor league. Professional football would hate it, not only would it lack in attendance therefore money but also it would upset the free ride that universities and tradition have established over the past 100 years plus. "Supreme Court, Lawyers, Workers Compensation, Income tax, Social security, Medicare" are all buzz words to make it sound important. Do you see the rat hole that we are being dragged into? The players are junior partners in that they are short term participants with established Universities and their traditions and should be treated as such. NIL money yes (sorry), capped, as partners, not workers. "I'm from the government and I am here to help you." Unforeseen Consequences: Will the Student-Athlete Become a... FISHDUCK.COM There’s a lot going on in college athletics that will bring change. Change that will include the competition between schools on the playing fields and in the…
  9. Chilly here in Newport Beach. It may not top 62. Clouds on the horizon. It may rain tomorrow night but probably not. You know the weather man around here they graduated from the Cristobal school of offense. Now that's offensive.
  10. Dan Lanning's response and his handling of Spenser Webb's accidental death when DL was the new man in the box meant to me that this guy was smart. It meant to me that he had compassion and had already become part of a team and he became part of a family. He honored a kid who was so likable in many ways. His quick recognition of Webb's place on the team and what he was to the players showed he had empathy for all. I thought " This guy is a keeper. He comes with the right pedigree and he'll develop roots". His treks with the team to Spencer Butte not only honored Webb but it brought the team even closer together. That added to Our Beloved Duck's spirit. His further honoring him with his number placed at the 4 yard line was a touch of class. Thank you Dan Lanning. Your roots will run deep. Chuc007
  11. More old guy stuff, wasn't John McKay the yards per carry rushing leader for many many years? How about Mel Renfro
  12. I never forgave Mike for telling me there was no Santa Clause while playing a pickup basketball game with him and telling him at age 6 and one half that I had to go home because Santa was coming. It took awhile but I got my revenge as a junior in high school when we beat the pants off his Marshfield Pirates in football. Admittedly it was a rarity, they had this great coach named Pete Susick who lived and graduated from my high school,North Bend. He was legendary. I bet you still can't beat my All American college golfer brother, Rick Seven. Your wife Jan was great to my parents also. Your article was spot on. Let's not forget how lucky we are to have Dan Lanning my fellow ducks. Most people were not alive in 6the 70s and early 80s when we were embarrassed every week.
  13. Never thought of myself as an old timer (class of ‘66) ,but here goes. I don’t see how the great article on duck coaching history could leave out Len Casanova who coached at Santa Clara then came to the UO as head football coach. He was an excellent coach and better leader of men. His 10/7 loss to number one Ohio State in the 1958 Rose Bowl was spectacular at that time even given the final score. Not only did he coach two great Oregon NFL hall of famers , Mel Renfro and Dave Wilcox, he also guided terrific coaches into the NFL namely John McKay, George Seifert, John Robinson, and.Gunther Cunningham of the.K a sad City Chiefs
