Lanning does trust his secondary, let me explain. This is what I've come up with in large part trading takes back and forth with Charles - if I'm partway there he fills in the blank spots for me well.

But first this is a great article, the stills and videos tie in with what Charles is teaching so well. They also show the two deep safeties in the Oregon Cover-2 well. Well Done, Charles!! People should really learn from this.

I was expecting with the Lanning hire we'd get a havoc downhill defense like WAZZU runs.

But it appears Lanning's brilliant mind has sorted his personnel and he is controlling the game with his defense.

Lanning wants to stress the opposing teams offensive line coach and players - he is doing that by them never knowing what four players are going to rush the passer.

The Duck's defense is stuffing the run and sits at No. 16 in rush defense at 86.5 yards per game. So, teams have to pass to move the ball consistently. He has made teams one dimensional on offense

Lanning is running the Cover-2 with the two deep safeties. That look pre-snap tells the QB the open read will be bubble screens, slants, short crosses and RB screens. The QB knows any deep pass with have max protection from the two deep safeties and is the wrong read.

Lanning has now made the other teams passing game one dimensional

Lanning is controlling how the other team attacks his defense.

They can't run and they can't pass deep, and Lanning gets enough pressure rushing four to cause problems. When QBs hold the ball and look for the deep a ball we are getting pressure to them.

To tie this up I think Lanning knew he was going to have a high scoring offense with explosion plays and lighting fast scoring drives. He expects to play from the lead most of the time and make teams pass to catch up.

His defense is built to not let other teams run the ball effectively so they can establish early control of the game with the run. Then when the Ducks get out to a lead - teams will have to pass more to catch up. The open spots Lanning is giving them to pass is underneath making them drive the field, they run clock and they get no over the top huge explosion plays.

Until some team can come out and run the ball early with enough sucess that they can get out to a lead, and their defense is slowing us down... well only then do i suspect we will adjust to stop them.

Based on what I think and Charles input. I think we will see this scheme on defense with the Cover-2 and simulated pressures in the four-man rush continue to be the heart of our defensive scheme.

it reminds of the bend don't break to prevent deep plays. Backers are working in concert with d line to determine the type of O run against them.

I'm on the Bo Nix bandwagon and I'm the guy who wrote "Beware the Bandwagon Buy In"

The jump Nix has made in his play is AMAZING... this in the new Bo and here is his stat line

His 72% completion that's a 12% increase from last year

His 8.3 yards per attempt is 1.2 yards increase from last year

His 162.4 pass rating is a 30.2 increase from last year

While I was critical of Bo making a jump he has done so. I said I would be happy if he made a jump to the production level Herbs has his senior year as he kept up in the playoff mix until late.

Bo has made such a jump his has surpassed Herbs senior year stats. Right now, Bo has the highest completion percentage in the Pac-12, tied fourth best passer rating.

Bo is playing elite, and his pick six I blame on Kenny Dillingham for running the same pass play to the same side of the field back-to-back.

Nice post! I like his grit

Do you think he will face lessor competition overall, this year than previous years?

Again, it seems, I want to agree with you but can't quite get myself to sign on when it comes to Bo's deep passing skills.  To me, he hasn't shown the ability to do that yet.  He did throw a beautiful pass deep on Georgia, but a terrific play resulted in it's interception, because it was under-thrown.

In the last game he did it again, right in front of our eyes (we sit on the 7-yard line) and the same thing happened, almost.  It was under-thrown.  He has a beautiful spiral but maybe his arm isn't as strong as it needs to be.  I don't know.

Bingo, I think what will determine a change in QB is if Bo cannot through the long ball and lead receivers deep.

WE have several racehorse wr's just waiting to be led deep. They can run to the ball if its put in the correct place. Butter has a nice deep ball.

  4. Lanny and his staff want to be nice and play players that want to play. Dan has said as much.

I dont have a problem with that as the new staff is trying to see who can be game time difference makers.

Me personally, Id like to see a couple featured backs at most and use the others as needed or during blow outs.

Top notch backs waont want to play it by committee and you run the risk of transfer.

Was it the forced ball or the lack of precision, and putting the ball where his player has the best shot at catching the ball? Seems like Nix, sometimes lacks the ability to put the ball where it needs to go, rather than just in the direction of the open receiver.

I agree in that he doesn't seem to have that knack of putting the ball where it needs to be and he seems to have that gunslinger style while out of the pocket where he's not afraid of risky throws. Thats ok as long as you can lead your receiver into a deep throw, however if he slings under the D and into coverage he seems to force it with a hopeful pin point pass.

I think he will improve more so under this offense as the season goes on.

  6. That the offense will be more innovative than last few years.

Learned that we now have solid receivers and the TE's will be used more than under MC.

Bo still try's to force passes and was lucky he wasn't intercepted a few times. Played decently though.

Rather than feature a few backs we will see KD use multi pack backs through out the year. They want to play players that can play.

  7.  6 Years of really decent recruiting and it doesn't seem we are all that more talented than some of Mikes teams.

The whole recruiting frenzy and all the star designations, coupled with NIL & the portal, only hypes the expectations more.

I like 2&3 star players that have an axe to grind and huge work ethic.

Some of those boys will be showing up today against the Quack.

I was dissipointed when he said Nix is our QB. So the close competition was all hot air? MC would not give his backups playing time and now that error is being repeated.

Yeah, I was too. I watched the spring game and Bo didnt look any better than the other two.

I think Dillingham is the one wanting to stay with Bo probably has assurance from Dan that he's the guy.

While it's certainly true it takes time to get used to a new system and is to be expected, it's discouraging that Lanning's superior recruiting (?) has brought us a seasoned 4th year QB who can't get a touchdown against a very good team. We're supposed to wait while he learns some more? Add to that a repeat of not playing the backups. Overall, the team has regressed.

I'm fully ready to support a mediocre team while this systems transition happens. What I can't support is this whole QB baloney. I watched OSU-Boise State last night and the backup QB, a freshman, came in and did a superb job, bringing some inspiration and team play up a level, and forcing the Beavs to put their starters back on the field. They discussed the QB competition in camp where there was a real competition, the result being there was no FEAR to put the backup in the game to jolt some action. But Oregon? Fearful of the QB position.

agree. I think the only reason Bo is here is because his relationship with Kenny D.

  10. Travis is still honeymooning with his new bride & school/team. Making a comment about how he feels about his new surroundings isn't that big a deal and his time as a Duck will always be special to him, Im sure. He was part of many changes here with coaches and such plus being engaged seemed to be a good time for him to create change with a new directions.

When college players that are good enough to play at the next level, they will more than likely be traded a few times and probably making comments comparing old with new.
