Great articles that really help me more deeply understand the game. I came to FishDuck because of these analytical articles, but I’ve come to realize how much time and effort each article takes. When talking about a new attitude…there was a punt by Oregon and #14, a freshman, was one of the gunners. He got tangled up with a WSU player who at the end of the play yelled and aggressively gestured at the Oregon player. #14 just stepped back and calmly watched he WSU player until a WSU teammate came and pulled the angry player away. #14 wasn’t looking at, or acting, to escalate the situation, just making sure he wasn’t going to be attacked.
As soon as the confrontation deescalated he calmly jogged to the sideline. I was so impressed, especially compared to previous years where this could have turned unto a fight. If I was a parent, this calm approach is what I’d want coaches to teach my child. Just great to see.

Should have been ranked going in, and after the loss. If I lived near Pullman I’d be a fan. They are a team easy to root for.

Underutilized and unappreciated as an assistant was not worth the long hours. Time to retire. IMHO Mari no O is the same type.
One thing I’ve noticed is how much fun Oregon players are having this year. I hope the same holds for the coaches. Dante Moore must be really happy with his choice to come to Oregon.

Yes, and yesterday’s interception was tipped. I love watching Nix throw the ball away. He is the main reason the offense is light years ahead of the defense.

Mari-no-o would have lost badly. Poor in-game adjustments and time management plus conservative play when aggressive play is needed.

LOL, I don’t need a stress test now! We need a FB safety check: Safe at "in front of the TV after the Oregon game." I thought Nix’s interception was tipped. What a joy to see coaches making adjustments that work. Mari-no-o would have not thrown the ball over five yards down field during the drive which in this offense won the game for us.

First, Oregon won this game. WSU didn’t “coug it." I love that our coaches were actually able to make smart adjustments, something that continues to escape Mari-no-o. WSU is a good team. I’m enjoying the toughness and resiliency of this team. Should have been a game between two Top 25 teams but WSU was ignored.

The sack as a diminishing stat, with Georgia as a prime example

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart: “The game is not to sit back there and have a guy be a sitting target.”"The sack is a sexy number and still holds some weight. It’s better to sack someone than not, considering the lost yardage and the chance to force a fumble. There aren’t many highlight videos of quarterbacks just throwing the ball away, and QB pressures don’t show up as a regularly used stat.
But defenses, realizing how much harder it has been to get sacks, have not looked at them as the main barometer for whether they’re getting enough pressure.
“It’s the evolution of the game,” Smart said. “Our job is to be disruptive and pressure the quarterback, affect the quarterback. But that doesn’t always equal sack the quarterback, which is obvious this year, that that’s been tough to do.”
The South Carolina game was a perfect example of where the game has gone: Spencer Rattler, the dual-threat South Carolina quarterback, spent the game on his heels, rushing throws. Georgia pressured Rattler on 42.9 percent of his dropbacks. But Georgia never sacked Rattler.
Kentucky’s win at Florida two weeks ago is another good example: The Wildcats rattled Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson, forcing him to throw two back-breaking interceptions and generally be ineffective. But he was sacked only once.
Michigan has lost edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson to the NFL Draft but has still been great on defense this year, and it isn’t dependent on the sack. While the Wolverines racked up seven in their opener against Colorado State, they only had one against Hawaii and zero in a shutout against UConn.
Alabama superstar Will Anderson only has two sacks, and Alabama is tied for 45th nationally in the category. But the Crimson Tide still have the nation’s fifth-ranked defense.
This doesn’t mean sacks can’t be important to some teams. Arkansas has ridden its nation-leading 17 sacks to an unbeaten start, USC has 14 sacks, and Ole Miss has 13 sacks on the way to having the fourth-ranked scoring defense. Virginia Tech, the nation’s fourth-ranked defense, had five sacks in its 27-10 win over Boston College but only one in its loss at Old Dominion.
But the trend shows sacks are becoming less important to the game as a whole. College football has evolved in mostly a straight line, the forward pass gradually becoming more popular, the wishbone nearly extinct and the Air Raid elements present at basically every program.

I’m pleased/impressed by the team’s growth. That can only happen with good coaching and a team that believes in their coaches. This was an impressive win against a good team. If we can play like this at WSU then watch out.
