  1. BURLESON HEADED TO COLLEGIATE ATHLETE HALL OF FAME THE 14-MEMBER CLASS WILL BE INDUCTED SEPT. 14 AT THE HULT CENTER IN EUGENE. Oregon great and three-time NCAA champion Dyrol Burleson is headed to the Collegiate Track & Field/Cross Country Athlete Hall of Fame as announced Wednesday morning by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Cottage Grove, Ore., native is part of a 14-member class that will be inducted Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the Hult Center in Eugene. The ceremony will be open to the public and be two days prior to the Prefontaine Classic (Sept. 16-17) which will double as this year's Diamond League Final. Undefeated against collegiate competition during his UO career, Burleson ran to the 1960 NCAA title in the 1500 meters followed by back-to-back titles in the mile in 1961 and 1962. That win in 1962 helped lead the Men of Oregon to their first NCAA team title with 85 points in front of the home fans in Eugene. In April 1960, Burleson became the second sub-four miler in American history and the first to break the milestone barrier at Historic Hayward Field. With his time of 3:58.6, he broke the American record in the mile. He also set an American record in the 1500 meters of 3:40.9 in 1960. Burleson finished his running career with bests of 3:38.8 (1964) at 1500 meters and 3:55.60 (1963) in the mile. As a senior, Burleson added a third American record to his credit with his 8:42.5 over two miles in 1962. In May of that same year, he anchored the Ducks' 4xMile relay to a then-world best time of 16:08.9 with teammates Archie San Romani, Vic Reeve and Keith Forman. 2. Ducks announce roster breakdown for annual Spring Game on Saturday We obviously know the players who will be taking the field on Saturday afternoon for the Oregon Ducks’ annual spring game. For the most part, we have a good idea about how much they will be playing, and in what positions they will be playing as well. We didn’t know what color jerseys they would be wearing, though. This is always interesting to look through since it can offer a few hints about potential starting players. Are the best receivers on the same team as Bo Nix? What about the starting offensive linemen? Are some of the top defenders going against the best defenders or the best defensive linemen against the best offensive linemen? We now have the answers to those questions. Here is the complete breakdown of the spring game teams. This article breaks the teams down by position...It will probably make it easier for you to compare. 3. Oregon men’s basketball to play in Emerald Coast Classic Oregon will play in the 2023 Emerald Coast Classic. The Ducks will join Alabama, Ohio State and Santa Clara at the multi-team event, which will be played Nov. 24-25 at Northwest Florida State College’s Raider Arena in Niceville, Florida. “We’re excited about the rich tradition of this year’s tournament field,” tournament director and CEO of Global Sports Maury Hanks said in a statement. “We continue to strive to bring the best college basketball teams possible to the Emerald Coast of Florida.” Oregon guard Brennan Rigsby attended Northwest Florida State College, as did Oregon alum and 2021 first round draft pick Chris Duarte. 4. Oregon lands rising Texas tight end Jackson Ford Oregon continues to add to its Texas pipeline. On Wednesday, the Ducks landed a commitment from Melissa (Texas) tight end Jackson Ford. Ford features an impressive 6-6, 235-pound frame that immediately catches the eye. He plays both sides of the ball on the high school level at tight end and defensive end, earning district newcomer of the year honors after moving into the Lone Star State from Tennessee for his junior season. The rising prospect emerged as a priority for the Ducks during the offseason. Head coach Dan Lanning, tight end coach Drew Mehringer, and offensive coordinator Will Stein all played big roles in Ford pledging to Oregon. "I've been up there twice now, and the coaches are great people," Ford told Rivals about Oregon. "Coach Mehringer, the tight ends coach, is a great guy. He's put a lot of people into the league and is all about relationships." Oregon lands rising Texas tight end Jackson Ford OREGON.RIVALS.COM The Ducks strike in Texas again.
  5. Cornerback Darren Barkins continues the portal entrants from Oregon It’s been quite an interesting day for the Oregon Ducks football program as the seemingly mass exodus into the transfer continues. This time it’s corner Darren Barkins announcing via Twitter that he will also be looking for another team to play for in 2023 and beyond. The sophomore from Spring Valley, Calif. and Mater Dei High School played in eight of the Ducks’ 13 games last season, mostly on special teams. Barkins was credited with three tackles. A former three-star recruit, Barkins was rated as the 65th-ranked player in the state of California. He’ll have three years of eligibility remaining for his new team. 6. Colorado's transfer portal exodus is historic, expected and risky Between graduation, professional declarations and transfers (many of whom were cut), more than 70% of the team’s scholarship allotment from last season has now departed. That’s historic turnover. We’ve never seen anything like this in college football. Rebuilds usually take years, so it’s great, conceptually, to take over a team and sign all your own recruits in a single swoop. If you could bring in your own players all at once, it’d greatly reduce the time it takes to turn a 1-11 roster into a contender. However, that assumes there are enough good players out there to fill your roster the way it needs to be filled. Right now, I’d really question if that’s the case for Colorado. This is not to say the Buffaloes haven’t had their portal successes. They have! Colorado’s 2023 transfer portal class ranks No. 1 nationally. The Buffaloes have signed 29 players so far, a group that includes multiple plug-and-play starters and the No. 1 player in the portal rankings, Travis Hunter. The issue is you eventually run out of players to add. This strategy might ultimately work for Sanders. He’s an elite recruiter and now has room to add quality transfers and make a run at a massive and impactful 2024 class. But there are great risks to this approach, too. Depth matters in college football. Continuity does, too. Sanders is taking both ideas and tossing them aside much like he did with most of the roster he inherited. Colorado's transfer portal exodus is historic, expected and risky 247SPORTS.COM Deion Sanders told us this would happen, but is his transfer portal strategy at risk of backfiring?
  7. Colorado players in portal detail experience with Deion Sanders: 'He was worried about who he brought in' From the day he was introduced, first-year Colorado coach Deion Sanders made it clear that the Buffaloes roster would undergo an extreme overhaul after the program limped to a 1-11 record in 2022. Now, that overhaul is coming into focus just a few months into the job for Sanders, who arrived after three seasons at Jackson State. Outgoing players who spoke to The Athletic following spring practice painted a picture of a coach with no qualms about exercising his ability to cut players. "I'm not sure he knew the names of half the kids he got rid of," said outgoing offensive lineman Travis Gray. "He was worried about who he brought in. If you were on the 1-11 team, it seemed like he didn't really care about us at all. He already said he was going to get rid of 25-30 of us, and that's exactly what he did." "None of the new coaches would talk to the old players and treat us the same as the people they brought in," outgoing tight end Zach Courtney told The Athletic. "The new guys wouldn't be picked on as much in film. Coaches would tell them to just do better, but if it was an old player, they'd keep going off on what you did wrong and keep yelling about it." 8. Pac-12 Softball Weekly Rundown - April 26, 2023 A Top 25 matchup in Salt Lake City highlights this weekend's schedule, as Pac-12 softball continues down the stretch of its regular season. No. 2 UCLA is at No. 23 Utah for a trio of games broadcast on Pac-12 Networks and a chance to clinch the Pac-12 regular-season title outright. The Bruins, which have won 17 games in a row, have already secured a share of the championship with a sweep of Arizona State last weekend. UCLA needs just one victory to be outright champions and wrap up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Pac-12 Softball Tournament. The Utes are the only team that has a chance to catch UCLA. Utah would need to sweep the Bruins this weekend and the Ducks next weekend to earn a share of the regular-season championship. Doing so would give the Utes the tiebreaker over the Bruins and the top seed at the Pac-12 Tournament. In addition to UCLA at Utah, No. 14 Oregon, which has won nine straight, will look to continue its solid stretch at California, Arizona hosts Oregon State looking to snap a 13-game Conference losing, and Arizona State hosts Stanford in an attempt to stop its seven-game Pac-12 skid. 9. Ducks eager for spring game showcase in Autzen Stadium According to coach Dan Lanning, Oregon has been taking spring camp just one day at a time ahead of the annual spring game this Saturday. Still, it was clear from the interviews after Tuesday’s practice that the thought of playing in front of a (hopefully) packed Autzen Stadium has crept into the minds of some players. A phrase that Lanning harped on throughout his interview after practice was “competition,” and though he noted that wants his team to play with slight caution, he said that his biggest focus is to see guys compete and treat this Saturday like any normal Saturday in-season. “Play clean. We’d like to be penalty-free pre-snap and post-snap,” Lanning said. “Ultimately, you just want to see that competition – guys go out there and treat it like a game.” Though Lanning’s emphasized that the spring game is just another part of the spring camp experience, he did admit that there is a different value to it. “I think there’s value in seeing how guys perform on a stage when there’s a setting that’s a little bit different,” Lanning said. “I think there’s definitely some value to that.” Ducks eager for spring game showcase in Autzen Stadium OREGON.RIVALS.COM Coach Dan Lanning and players talked after practice Tuesday about the anticipation for the spring game.
  10. SoCal WR Jack Ressler cuts his list of schools down to five Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei wide out Jack Ressler cut his list of schools down to five over the weekend and broke down what stands out about each of his finalists. Ressler is a talented receiver who will be a three-year starter for the Monarchs. He’s a tough, sure handed slot receiver who runs well after the catch. He recently cut his list of schools down to Arizona State, Boise State, Oregon, Oregon State and Penn State. “One thing all five of my schools have in common is great coaching,” Ressler said. “A strong coaching staff is very important in my decision and all of these schools have world class head coaches and position coaches. “My main goal is not only to play early but to get mentorship and to continue to get better. I believe all five of these schools can provide that for me.” SoCal WR Jack Ressler cuts his list of schools down to five 247SPORTS.COM Santa Ana (Calif.)
