Can Thompson Re-Write His Story This Spring?
Pennsylvania Duck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Hi WA Waddler & OhioDuck. I like the analogies with TT's problem. All QBs that are any good are alphas and they need to be. Leadership/confidence isn't something that has to be taught to a QB at the college level. The mindset is already there from a young age. I remember when my son played youth football, you could tell even then that the QB had an "it" factor and the wannabe QBs quickly fell to the side. Alphas just don't lose it going from high school to college. Being in a driving simulator to me is like being at practice. You learn at practice and take it into the game. This "deer in the headlight" thing is hard for me to get passed to give TT the keys to the offense. It is a mental/head case and I feel those are hard cases to solve. One never knows when the "headlights" are going to show up and it appears that with TT, it shows up too often. He has been in the simulator/driver's training for 2 years already. I think the Ducks are going to be a very good team this year with Nix at QB. If we want to stay relevant in the conference/Natty race, there are not enough opportunities/time to build up TT's leadership skills and solve his "headlight" issues during a game. It would be hard for me to sacrifice a season in order for TT to hone his skills or find out that he is not the answer during the season if Nix is hurt. Perhaps TT would be a better fit at a school where there is less pressure on the football team and the competition is not so strong each week. The expectations for Oregon football under Lanning are especially high. Personally, I think TT is a fine young man but I just don't think he fits the profile we need. -

CU Buffs roster overhaul continues as players jump into transfer portal From the day he took over as Colorado’s head football coach in December, Deion Sanders has promised there would be changes – major changes. Sanders has never wavered from that and the post-spring purge of the roster is in full swing. On Monday, 16 more players announced their intentions to enter the NCAA transfer portal, including 2022 leading rusher Deion Smith and dynamic receiver Jordyn Tyson, who is recovering from a knee injury. Overall, 18 players have left the Buffs since Saturday’s spring game and 31 since the NCAA transfer portal window opened on April 15. CU currently has 68 scholarship players projected for next season, giving Sanders 17 open spots to work with at the moment. Oregon Relays Day Two Recap As the sun was setting over the cascades surrounding Hayward Field, hundreds of fans gathered on lane six, banging noise making tubes and cheering on the athletes competing in the mile championships during night two of the Oregon Relays, on Saturday. Eugene’s own Jenn Randall won the women's pro mile challenge, completing four laps in 4 minutes and 33.84 seconds. She works as a physical therapist and coaches kids in the community, all while still running professionally for local team, Cascadia Elite. Three men ran sub 4 minutes during the professional mile race. Johnny Gregorek was the fastest man in the final event of the night, running a 3:58.44. Future Duck William Heslam now holds the state’s leading time in the boys 800 meters. The Rosevelt high school senior’s time of 1:49.79 is the fifth fastest in the nation this year. He took advantage of long strides and a strong kick to take control of the race on the home stretch. “I knew if I put myself in a good position,” Heslam said, “I could put the wheels on in the last 150. This is obviously such a magic place to run and I’m super excited to show what I got – shout out to my grandma.” Click here to read about more participants at the event in The Daily Emerald. -

David Stone joins long list of 5-star recruits visiting Eugene for Oregon spring game The visitor list of recruits at the Oregon Ducks spring game next weekend is hands down growing into the most talented we’ve ever seen in Eugene. What was already a stacked group of players got even better on Sunday night when 5-star defensive lineman David Stone Jr. announced that he would be in attendance for the spring game. Stone is the sixth 5-star recruit to announce his intentions to attend the game, joining Dylan Stewart, Elijah Rushing, Colin Simmons, KJ Bolden, and Brandon Baker. Rushing popped up on a visit to Eugene this weekend, so it is unclear whether or not he will return next week for the spring game again. Stone is rated as the No. 7 overall player in the 2024 class and the No. 2 defensive lineman. At the end of last year, he put the Ducks among his top 10 schools, but this is the first time that we know of him taking a visit out to Eugene. Can Thompson Re-Write His Story This Spring?
Pennsylvania Duck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Enjoyed reading your article, Joshua. It's another year and another season of Ty Thompson pondering. In my opinion, his is not a case of lack of talent or even game scheme to fit. The reports indicate he does well in practice, at camps, and was a great high school QB. However, when you put him under the lights and in the pressure of an actual college game, he doesn't seem to have what it takes. It seems like he has never been mentally able to adjust to the speed and talents of defenses seen in college. To be honest, I don't know that the Spring Game can give you the true answer to TT for this season. It is a team scrimmage. How would he do when an opponent actually schemes against him? With the tough schedule the Ducks have this year and the high expectations for the team, I am not sure I am at the point of trusting TT to take over if Nix gets hurt. There is just too much at stake in an improved Pac-12. I know many have commented how admirable it is of him to stick it out with the Ducks all these years, but is he really the Ducks best option for this season? Our QB situation after Nix is a worry and perhaps someone better might be available from the portal after these spring games. -

Top Transfer DT Bear Alexander Announces Transfer Decision Top Transfer defensive tackle Bear Alexander is heading to the West Coast, where he will join the USC Trojans. The Texas Longhorns were one of many programs interested in the services of recent Georgia Bulldogs transfer defensive tackle Bear Alexander, who entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, and immediately became a hot commodity. And on Sunday, Alexander made his final decision, committing to the USC Trojans over Texas, Miami, Colorado, Oregon and Penn State. Alexander, who played for four different high schools in as many seasons as a recruit, has now moved to his second college program in two years - making it six different programs in the last six years for the 6-foot-3, 325-pound run-stopper. In his lone season with Georgia, Alexander had nine tackles, and two sacks, with two pass deflections, with one of those sacks coming in the Bulldogs' 65-7 national title win over TCU. Social distancing guidelines are no longer implemented at college football games, but you wouldn't know it from yesterday's crowd in Washington. The annual intrasquad spring game for the Huskies apparently didn't capture the imagination of fans, as only a smattering of Washington supporters showed up. The image and caption below from Ethan Kilbreath summarizes the situation. "There’s no sugarcoating that the attendance for the [Washington Huskies] spring preview is light, from the stands to the press box. It’s also not a big deal. Spring game hasn’t been a spectacle for years for the Huskies, and they’re essentially playing a simulated scrimmage," he tweeted. Funny that it was one of the cover stories on MSN tonight. Return visits, delayed commitments raise intrigue around UO's 2024 QB recruitment There are some interesting developments that are taking place when it comes to quarterback recruiting at the University of Oregon. Over the past couple of months, it has become clear that the Ducks are largely picking between a pair of quarterback recruits in the 2024 class; 3-star Luke Moga and 4-star Michael Van Buren. While there was some early buzz that they might be in the mix to land 5-star QB Dylan Raiola, that has cooled over the past month, and it appeared that one of the two aforementioned players was going to end up being Will Stein’s guy in the 2024 class. A week ago, handicappers would have said that Moga was the likely option, with a prediction from 247Sports Steve Wiltfong for the rising passer to pick Oregon. However, some things may be changing as the cycle goes on. On Sunday, Van Buren — who was in Eugene for a visit last weekend — announced that he would be coming back to Oregon for the spring game next weekend. Not long after, Moga announced that he would be delaying his official commitment, which was scheduled for April 28, the day before Oregon’s spring game. It should also be noted that Moga was on campus with the Ducks this weekend. So what does all of that mean? I’ve got a few thoughts. Sweep Complete, For Second Straight Week Oregon softball has swept back-to-back Pac-12 series and won nine games in a row overall after Sunday's 7-4 win over Arizona. Oregon has a nine-game winning streak and has swept consecutive Pac-12 series for the first time under head coach Melyssa Lombardi after a 7-4 victory Sunday over Arizona before 1,803 fans at Jane Sanders Stadium. The No. 17 Ducks (31-11, 11-7 Pac-12) trailed for the first time in the series, falling behind 4-0 through three innings Sunday. But they rallied to win, taking the lead with a four-run sixth to enter the final two weeks of conference play in fourth place. "That was big for us," Lombardi said. "It's hard to get wins in the Pac. It's hard to get sweeps in the Pac. Nothing comes easy." Sweep Complete, For Second Straight Week - University of Oregon Athletics GODUCKS.COM Oregon softball has swept back-to-back Pac-12 series and won nine games in a row overall after Sunday's 7-4 win over Arizona. Karissa Ornelas’ bases-clearing double sends No. 16 Oregon softball past Arizona to complete sweep For the second time this weekend Karissa Ornelas came in to pinch hit with the bases loaded and Oregon’s backup catcher, who entered the weekend hitting .226 — including just 1 for 7 in Pac-12 play, delivered yet again. After Arizona intentionally walked Ariel Carlson to load the bases and plunked Kedre Luschar to force in the tying run, Ornelas belted a 1-0 pitch down the line in right for a bases-clearing double to put the No. 16 Ducks ahead for good in a 7-4 win over the Wildcats Sunday afternoon at Jane Sanders Stadium. “I think (Ornelas is) an experienced athlete,” Lombardi said. “She’s at the end of her career. She never gets too high or too low. I think she’s made for the those moments and continues to clutch up for us.” The fifth-year senior turned on an inside pitch and drove it down the line to the corner in right, scoring all three runners and had the 1,803 in attendance out of their seats. Ornelas improved to 5 of 16 as a pinch hitter and is now 4 for 5 with seven RBIs with the bases loaded this season. North Texas TE transfer Var'Keyes Gumms announces college decision The Oregon Ducks still have a big question to answer when it comes to what they’re going to do at the tight end position in the 2023 season. After starter Terrance Ferguson went down with an injury earlier in this spring season and will be held out until this fall, it’s been made clear that Dan Lanning and Co. are looking hard at the transfer portal in order to find a TE who can help their depth. The top option, North Texas TE Var’Keyes Gumms, announced on Sunday that he would be transferring to the Arkansas Razorbacks, choosing them over the Ducks. The Ducks will continue to look at the portal over the next week before it closes again on April 30th. In the mean time, they will also continue to develop both Patrick Herbert and Kenyon Sadiq while hoping that Ferguson can make a quick recovery and be back in time for the season to start this fall.
