Making the Case: Will it be Georgia, Oregon or A&M for Tristan Jernigan Tristan Jernigan has more than a dozen offers but in recent days the three-star linebacker has narrowed his choices to three programs. Georgia, Oregon and Texas A&M made the cut for the Tupelo, Miss., standout and while a solid commitment date has not been finalized it looks like one of those three programs will win out for his services. And Jernigan will be a big-time catch in the 2024 class. The three-star linebacker is incredibly aware on the football field and also a devastating tackler who likes to hit people hard, track them to the sideline and make plays from his linebacker position. In today’s Making the Case, experts from around the Rivals network make an argument for a particular school and then National Recruiting Director Adam Gorney issues his verdict as to where he sees Jernigan ending up. FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT: APRIL 25 The Oregon football team was in full pads for practice Tuesday, and won't be again until Saturday's Spring Game. So there was no reason to hold back on the hitting Tuesday, and the Ducks sure didn't. Linemen battled in the trenches, safeties came up and whacked running backs, and running backs lowered their pads to return the favor. They were careful not to tackle to the ground, but there was no denying the physical nature of Tuesday's practice. Come Saturday, when the Spring Game kicks off in Autzen Stadium at 1 p.m., fans hopefully will get the same impression. "I think you're gonna see a really physical team," UO coach Dan Lanning said Tuesday. "… We have been much more physical as a team this spring than I think we were last year." By the numbers, Saturday will be practice No. 14 for the Ducks this spring; between now and then is No. 13, on Thursday morning, a lighter workout leading up to the Spring Game. But Saturday isn't just another practice. The stands in Autzen will be packed, and coaches will see which players rise to the occasion. Lanning will be watching for that, and more... Dan Lanning Urges Fans to Join Recruiting Effort Ahead of Oregon's Spring Game Oregon's coaching staff hopes to leverage weather and an electric Autzen atmosphere in their efforts to recruit top high school talent. With Oregon's spring football game set for Saturday, head coach Dan Lanning spoke with the media one final time on Tuesday before fans get their first glimpse of what's in store for the 2023 season. Lanning stressed the importance of a good showing from the crowd during the spring game, referencing how it will impact the Ducks’ ability to recruit. “Everybody here at Oregon needs to realize that they have an impact,” Lanning said on the involvement of fans. “We’re gonna have great players here on campus, but they [the fans] have an impact for what the experience looks like. They can help create that experience from a fan standpoint, from an administrative standpoint, from our staff standpoint. Making that experience really unique and special for the guys that we have here on campus.” Click here to read more about Coach Lanning's comments in Ducks Digest.

NFL assistants have mixed reviews about former Ducks CB Christian Gonzalez One of the most welcome surprises for the Oregon Ducks in 2022 was the strong play of cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Gonzalez was recruited as a 4-star CB by the University of Colorado and put up two solid years in Boulder before coming to Oregon. Gonzalez was anticipated to be a solid addition to the Ducks’ defense, but his output last season was a large improvement from his play at CU and exceeded all expectations. After his stellar 2022 campaign, Gonzalez is projected to be a first-round draft pick, likely being taken with one of the first 15 picks. Ahead of the draft, an anonymous NFL defensive coordinator said this to The Athletic. “He probably has the best measurables in a corner to come out since maybe Jalen Ramsey. He’s not an absolute savage and doesn’t have that cornerback attitude, but the coaches at Oregon’s say he’s a no-brainer and is gonna work hard,” he said. The Athletic also surveyed two unnamed NFL defensive backs coaches. The first gave strong reviews for Gonzalez while the second wasn’t so sure. 'He's a spitting image of Coach Meat;' Cole Martin is part of the family at Oregon The idea of a coach’s son in the world of sports growing up was not uncommon in the slightest. Quite often, the head coach of a team would typically have one of their kids on the roster, moving through the different levels of youth sports as their kid grows up. Typically, there may tend to be a hint of nepotism involved, with the coach’s kid often playing quarterback, pitcher, or point guard. When you get to the college level, though, the idea of a coach’s kid becomes far rarer. Almost never do you hear about the coach of a team having his son on the roster. This year in Eugene, we’ve been treated to those dynamics playing out with the Oregon Ducks between cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin and his son, defensive back Cole Martin. Obviously, Oregon players are particularly familiar with the eldest Martin in the program. But getting to know his son has been a treat, and often a source of entertainment in the meeting room. “It’s actually crazy because like, young Cole is a spitting image of Coach Meat,” cornerback Dontae Manning said on Saturday. “Like the aggression, the anger, the hype-ness. And it’s crazy like it’s literally his twin in a meeting room.” Oregon Football: Demetrice Martin enjoys chance to coach his son at UO DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM “It’s funny at times when they butt heads because it’s like ‘okay this the same person talking to himself.’”

The 100-plus page agenda for this week's College Football Playoff spring meeting might as well be a precursor. The toughest stuff is still to come. The annual meeting in Irving, Texas, held Tuesday through Thursday, will review the 2022 season and begin planning for the 10th year of the playoff -- largely routine stuff. However, this season will mark the last with four playoff teams. The expanded 12-team playoff begins in 2024 for two seasons before the entire enterprise is reconsidered for 2026 and beyond. Everything from media rights to game sites remains to be determined. About the only certainty for 2026, when the current contract expires, is that the 12-team bracket will continue. Given it took nearly 1 ½ years -- from presentation in June 2021 to final approval in December 2022 -- to create the expanded playoff, it's never too early to begin planning for the future including the following issues: -- Future playoff schedules -- Future playoff venues -- Revenue distribution -- Next media rights deal College Football Playoff to tackle major issues like future schedules, venues as spring meeting gets underway - CBSSports.com WWW.CBSSPORTS.COM A three-day meeting with top CFP stakeholders begins Tuesday in Texas

Wow! As if it wasn't already bad... Pac-12 Conference officials have long been the butt of the joke, but there may not be anymore jokes to make because there many not be any officials left. The ‘Conference of Champions’ is facing an officiating crisis. According to Football Zebras, five referees have left the Pac-12 in recent weeks. Four resigned, one retired. Mike Mothershed hung it up after 28 years with the conference. Chris Coyte, Francisco Villar, Steve Strimling and Jim Wharrie are headed to the Big Ten. Wharrie, although he worked at least three games as a referee last season, more frequently serves as a center judge. Regardless of what role they serve, all five officials are gone.
