  5. Jon Gold: Dan Lanning and the Ducks are embracing their role as big, bad wolves When you have started more career games than any other quarterback in college history, you’re entitled to a few things. One of those is over-the-top words of praise from your head coach. But it wasn’t all the adulation that Dan Lanning heaped upon Bo Nix — and there was a lot — following Oregon’s win at then-No. 13 Utah on Saturday that has my interest piqued. It was one word in particular. “I guess every quarterback is competitive, but this guy’s really intelligent. Really intelligent. And he thinks he’s Goliath and you know what? At times he performs like it. It’s impressive to see him be out there because he has the most confidence in the world in himself. And that confidence really pays off on game day. I don’t know. I can’t say enough great things about Bo Nix. He’s special.” Did you catch it? Goliath... 6. 5 takeaways from the first Playoff poll of 2023 We made it. The moment that every college football fan has been waiting for came and went. The first of the weekly Tuesday Playoff rankings shows is in the books. OK, jokes aside, I do find it interesting to see how the selection committee views these teams that we’ve been dissecting for the last 2 months. It’s perhaps not quite as reactionary as the AP Poll, yet it often feels like there’s at least 1 egregious mistake. Let’s dig into some takeaways... 5 takeaways from the first Playoff poll of 2023 SATURDAYOUTWEST.COM What did we learn from Tuesday night's debut show?

  8. Where Oregon's defense ranks nationally in key statistics after win over Utah What the Oregon Ducks defense did on Saturday afternoon against the Utah Utes team will go down as one of the best performances of the year. Of course, there won’t be songs written about Utah’s offense under Bryson Barnes this season, but the fact that Tosh Lupoi’s unit was able to so completely shut down the Utes and keep them out of the endzone from start to finish is nothing to look past. Unsurprisingly, the result boosted Oregon up in a ton of top statistics nationally, with the Utes only racking up 142 passing yards and 99 rushing yards on the day. So just how good is Oregon’s defense now when we look at it from a national perspective? Take a look... 9. Series History: A look back at the history of Oregon vs. Cal On Saturday, the No. 6 ranked Oregon Ducks will face off against the California Golden Bears. The Bears’ trajectory this season has been much different than Oregon’s. They are 3-5 and don’t have much hope for a bowl appearance whereas the Ducks are in a race for the College Football Playoff. Still, every game is just as important, and a win this weekend would be big for Oregon. In preparation for Saturday’s game, I looked back at the long and rich history of the series between these two teams. This series is as deadlocked as it gets — historically that is. In recent years, the Golden Bears have struggled to maintain a good football program, which has allowed the Ducks to win 13 of the 15 matchups between the two teams. But all-time, the story is different. The Bears and the Ducks have played 83 times — with the first game dating all the way back to 1899. 42 of the games have gone to Oregon and the other 41, to Berkeley... 12. DUCKS OPEN CFP RANKINGS AT NO. 6 The Oregon football team came in at No. 6 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of 2023 revealed Tuesday evening on ESPN. The Ducks (7-1, 4-1 Pac-12) are the nation's highest-ranked one-loss team, and are one of six Pac-12 teams in the top 25. Oregon and No. 5 Washington represent the Pac-12 in the top 10, followed by No. 16 Oregon State, No. 18 Utah, No. 19 UCLA and No. 20 USC. Oregon has now appeared in the CFP rankings 35 times since it began in 2014, when UO went on to play in the inaugural CFP national championship game. This is the Ducks' 20th top-10 CFP ranking, and highest since coming in at No. 6 on Nov. 6, 2022. 15. Through eight games of the regular season, the Ducks have remained a relatively healthy group, something head coach Dan Lanning credits to his strength and medical staff. Certainly, luck plays a factor in injuries as well. But as head coach Dan Lanning described on Monday night, the Ducks' strength and medical staff are doing all they can to remove as much luck from the equation as possible. "They do a phenomenal job. Chief (Kevin Steil) and his staff, we have a meeting every single day to give an update of where we're at," said Lanning. "I think what we do in sports science here is really special. You know, I think we're able to prevent a lot of injuries because before we get to an injury, we realize that a player's player loads high or his hamstring strength isn't where it needs to be, and we're able to pull off of them. Modify practice to make sure that they're able to see the field where I think a lot of places in the country don't necessarily have that technology or the ability to use that. "I think our strength coach is unbelievable. Coach (Wilson) Love and his staff do a phenomenal job of connecting with our players and making sure they get the needs that they need to be able to go out there and execute. A couple of things that we've changed on game day we do a primer lift, you know, with our players. We didn't do that in the past, and that's been something that's really good for us to activate their body, get them ready for battle, and they've done a good job of that." This is an interesting article about how Oregon's strength and medical staff are working to keep our players healthy... 18. Connor Stalions Accused of Wearing Disguise, Sneaking Onto Opponent's Sideline A new wrinkle has been added to the Michigan sign-stealing scandal. Connor Stalions, the suspended staffer who's found himself at the center of the controversy, is now being accused of wearing a disguise to sneak onto an opponent's sideline. Stalions apparently disguised himself as a Central Michigan staffer to spy on the Chippewas, according to MGoBlog. "Yes, this is Stalions. No, Michigan didn't know. No, CMU didn't know. Dude got a sideline pass, arrived in full CMU coaching gear, and snuck into the restricted area," MGoBlog wrote on X. To access the interesting details of this article, click here.
  19. How the Oregon Ducks performed in the NFL's Week 8 Week 8 of the NFL was unusual, particularly because there wasn’t a single team on bye across the league. For us, this meant every pro Oregon Duck’s team took the field this week. Justin Herbert and Kayvon Thibodeaux had particularly strong games this week, which you’ll want to check out. One player that you won’t see on the list this week is Dolphins’ star safety Jevon Holland. After spending the week in the concussion protocol, Holland was downgraded to out ahead of Miami’s game against New England. Although the Dolphins’ defense surely missed Holland, they were still able to crank out a win against the Patriots. 20. Where Oregon's offense ranks nationally in key stats following win over Utah While it was the Oregon Ducks’ defense who got a lot of the storylines on Saturday after holding the No. 13 Utah Utes out of the endzone in a top-15 matchup, I would argue that Bo Nix and the offense had a more impressive day, putting up numbers with ease on a Utah defense that ranked as one of the best in the nation. Though the total numbers might not be up to where the Ducks usually see them against average teams in the Pac-12, Oregon’s ability to pick apart the Utes’ defense should not be overlooked. At this point in the season, we’ve seen the cream rise to the top when it comes to national rankings, and the Ducks are currently sitting pretty. Here’s where they rank nationally in some key statistics after Week 9.
