As you would expect, fans and media members had a great time on social media reacting to the schedule of opponents released on Thursday. Here are some of the top reactions... How Oregon's defense stacks up statistically at the midpoint of the 2023 season The Ducks have reached the midseason break. They've played five games and have seven more left on their regular season schedule, including five against teams currently inside the AP top 25. Now is the time to do some review. Throughout this week we'll be running through what has stood out from this season at the midpoint. We'll do so in a variety of ways, but today's story will focus on stats. A day ago I archived how Oregon stacks up nationally in numerous offensive statistics. Today we'll turn our attention to the defense and take a look at where the team stands in numerous defensive statistical categories and where the team's top players do as well. I've compiled a breakdown of the team's national and conference standing to help illustrated strengths and weaknesses... The Ducks will officially join the Big Ten Conference in August 2024 and will play five league games at Autzen Stadium in their inaugural season. Oregon will host Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State and Washington in 2024, and will go on the road to Michigan, Purdue, UCLA and Wisconsin. BREAKING: Oregon Ducks Big Ten opponents released for 2024 season Ever since it was officially announced a couple of months ago, we’ve been wondering what the Oregon Ducks in the Big Ten Conference was going to look like. We know the teams in the league, and we know where the traditional powers lay, but we have all been curious to see how they were going to piece things together and schedule things out for the first season. The Big Ten did a good job earlier in the year of releasing their first conference schedule after the league expanded to bring in both the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins, adopting a “flex protect plus” format that made it so some teams will have more protected games against traditional rivals than others. Once the Oregon Ducks and Washington Huskies were added to the conference later this summer, though, that entire schedule went out the window. The conference has spent the last couple of months trying to piece together a new schedule, this time with 18 total teams. Now, in early October, that list of opponents for each team is finally being released. Here is who Dan Lanning and the Ducks will play in their first season as a member of the Big Ten Conference... USC's offensive line was 'physically beat' against Colorado USC's offensive line was 'physically beat' against Colorado. USC only rushed for 22 yards in the second half of last week's 48-41 win over Colorado. The inability to move the ball on the ground and chew up clock helped fuel the Buffaloes' comeback from 41-14 down. What loss of Noah Whittington means for Bucky Irving, Oregon RB rotation, and rest of the Ducks The unfortunate news came on Wednesday morning that the Oregon Ducks are not expecting running back Noah Whittington to return at all this season after suffering an apparent knee injury in the Week 4 win over the Colorado Buffaloes. In a second-half run, Whitting went down and appeared to have his left leg rolled up on by a defender. The extent of the injury has not been made clear, but I’ve been told that it is a knee injury, not an ankle injury, as was previously suspected. Regardless of the location of the injury, it is clear that the Ducks will have to go forward in the season without one of their top three running backs, a member of the trio that has been among the best in the conference thus far in 2023. While it is a major loss, there are some important notes to make about the injury, and what it means for both Whittington and the Ducks going forward. Here are some of my biggest notes on the matter... Oregon Football: What loss of Noah Whittington means for rest of Ducks DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Noah Whittington is out for the year. Where Oregons' defense ranks nationally in key statistics after Stanford blowout Before the 2023 college football season started, I don’t think many Oregon Duck fans thought they would enter the bye week raving about the defense, rather than the offense. That’s not to say that the offense has been bad at all — quite the contrary — but after it was the defense that ultimately let down the team a year ago in frustrating fashion, the fact that this unit has been among the best in the nation through five weeks is certainly something to celebrate. We saw that dominant unit at work once again on Saturday in a 42-6 win over the Stanford Cardinal, racking up 5 sacks and holding their opponent to just 222 total yards of offense. Going into the bye, the Ducks should feel really good about where they stand on this side of the ball. Here’s a look at where their defense ranks nationally in some key statistics... Ranking Oregon's top 10 players in win vs. Stanford according to PFF grades While Oregon’s defense ruled the day against Colorado, it was a more balanced performance vs. Stanford, with the offense providing some fireworks led by 4 total TDs from Bo Nix and 2 TDs from Troy Franklin. Meanwhile, the Ducks’ defense racked up another 5 sacks and kept the second straight team out of the endzone. With the performance, it doesn’t come as a surprise that many of Oregon’s players were highly-graded according to Pro Football Focus. Ranking Oregon's position groups through five weeks Eighth-ranked Oregon's 2023 season is nearing its midpoint. The bye week arrives with the team 5-0 with seven remaining conference games following it. With nearly half of the season behind us, it felt the right time to take stock of the team's positional hierarchy. In order to do so, I've ranked each position group. This exercise is completely subjective and based wholly on my weekly game grades. In order to rank the teams, I've combined grades for all five weeks and found the mean number for each group, and have ranked them in that order. I ranked each position group following the conclusion of spring back in May. You can take a look at those rankings HERE. I've included those rankings with this year's standing in order to help show how certain groups are playing above or below the expectations set in spring...Good info, recommended read Ranking Oregon's position groups through five weeks 247SPORTS.COM The eight-ranked Ducks have gone 5-0 entering the bye week, and here is how I'd rank the position groups through five weeks. -

Prediction: Oregon to Land All-American Defensive Lineman Dan Lanning and the Ducks have prioritized the trenches and it's paying off in a big way both on the field and on the recruiting trail. Oregon recruiting is in a solid spot after landing a recent commitment from 2026 5-star Scottsdale (Ariz.) Desert Mountain defensive lineman Tony Cumberland, who plans to reclassify to 2025. More good news may be on the way soon, as College of San Mateo (Calif.) cornerback Sione Laulea III is set to make his college commitment on Sunday October 8. I have my pick on the Ducks. Today, I'm ready to make a new prediction. I'm predicting 2024 Fairfield (Calif.) Armijo defensive lineman Jericho Johnson to commit to Oregon. Jordan James continues to thrive in bigger role in Noah Whittington's absence Oregon running back Jordan James has made the most of his opportunity to become an even bigger part of the offense this season. Through five weeks, few running backs in the Pac-12 have been more productive than Jordan James. The sophomore ranks sixth in yards gained (297), and is tops in both yards per carry average (8.7) and rushing touchdowns (7). His rush efficiency and pay dirt propensity hold up well nationally too, as he's top 10 in both categories. It's been quite the start to the season for James, who a year ago handled short yardage and goal line opportunities almost exclusively, finishing with five rushing scores but with only a 4.1 yards per carry average. How former Ducks performed in Week 4 of the NFL While Week 3 saw a plethora of former Oregon Ducks have personal success in the NFL, Week 4 wasn’t nearly as fruitful. Players like Juwan Johnson, Pharoah Brown, and Shane Lemieux, who either had their best or only game of the 2023 season last weekend, failed to impact the games they played in this weekend — if they played at all. There were still plenty of players that were able to make an impact. T.J. Bass is one of the more interesting stories of the week because, despite a poor performance last weekend, he still got in for the Cowboys this Sunday and showed improvement. That was the thinking for sportsbooks around the nation on Monday, where some opened up the betting for this potential game of the year in the Pac-12 a bit earlier than usual. With both teams undefeated and ranked inside the top 10, we are expecting to see an offensive duel between two Heisman-contending quarterbacks leading a pair of the nation’s best offenses against each other.
