Every draft prognostication I read before Nix decided to stay in Eugene had Nix going not later than the 2nd round and many had him in the 1st round.

Hmm. I guess I was looking at different sites. That said, I see he's projected to go in the late first round or the early second round after this year, so I suppose you are right. I still think losing Dante Moore was a big deal, though.

  2. If the Ducks are paying (not likely to have been drafted in the top-4 rounds in 2022) Bo Nix $1.5M for a one year "veteran's contract", that means the Ducks have that number in their range going forward for a good QB.

So...what is Dante Moore getting at UCLA? What did we offer Moore for his first season, or his projected payouts for subsequent seasons?

I ask, because if we're giving Bo Nix $1.5M for one season, we should have just offered a lot more for a "#1 overall draft pick" in Dante Moore. It's rare a "#1 overall draft pick" would want to come to Eugene.

Just saying. I still like Bo Nix, though. I would have made it publicly known that if we got Moore, that it would be "an open battle for the starting spot come Fall." Maybe we could have got Moore in that case.

  3. I find it very hard to criticize the B1G or the SEC for not scheduling P-5 games. Winning the National Championship is my goal every year, and scheduling  tough OOC opponent gets in the way of that too often. The PAC-12/10 is too weak, so I guess we can't go that route, but I certinly do not blame teams in legitimate conferences for handling their risks.

As someone who grew up in Washington, D.C., I always keep an eye on players from the DC Metro area. There aren't really many powerhouse teams anywhere nearby. Nashville is really far away, like 10 hours. Columbus is about 5 or 6 hours or so away I'd guess. The University of Maryland generally has good programs, but Oregon is a much bigger brand.

But the DC Metro produces more basketball players, so I guess it should be more of a focus for our scouts for that sport. Georgetown has fallen off the map, and Maryland is sometimes hit or miss. UVA is once again a powerhouse in basketball after disappearing after Y2K, but their football program isn't even competing with teams like the Ducks. UNC, maybe.

Anyway, my point is that Oregon needs to open up a satellite recruiting office in D.C., the land of the lobbyists! Stake claim where there is taxation without representation!

  5. That sucks that happened to you. I hope you email them what you wrote here, and see if they can do you a special favor. That said, it wasn't just Altman complaining. It's embarrassing as a fan to see empty seats at MKA. I don't really have to play devil's advocate here, I think making the stadium appear fuller is a pretty good idea.

My guess is that doing so is taken from a page in Arena Management 101. It's possible that the UO made a mistake by ever even offering those seats to season ticket holders until Eugene started selling out the arena on a year-by-year basis. They failed Area Management 101: Chapter 1, in that regard. Handcuffing a company or an organization to early mistakes is not fair.

There are other things that the UO needs to do to get more fans. Making promotional deals for single game tickets (buy 1 get 1 half off) would be a start. I never get promo emails from the Basketball team from UO, but I get a ton from the Football program, which is interesting since the basketball team needs more fans!

Marketing shouldn't just advertise promos via email, but through the RegisterGuard.com (and the paper), the Eugene Weekly, and TV spots on KEZI.

Another thing the UO needs to do to make the game look better on TV (which is exceptionally important) is to finally change the court to something, anything, less distracting.

Anyway, the Ducks have three 5-star recruits coming next year (two consensus). They also might get Lebron James' son, Bronnie. If that happens the stadium might be sold out.

  6. Fun second half! I must say, though, if the coaches call Ty Thomson's first snap from the line to be a backwards pass one more time, I might lose my mind.

Last season that was his first play call when he went in on three occasions, one for a big loss, one hit a player in the helmet, and one was a fumble. Simple request.

  7. Very disappointing. Gonzalez was the third DB drafted. I'm a Washington (D.C.) fan, and I was shocked they had a chance to pick him at 16. Then they went and picked a different DB! What???

Gonzalez had a one percent chance of dropping to #17 by experts. By almost no measure was going 17 a good night. I suppose going to a team that has had great DB's (from Oregon) is a plus.

Surprising, but probably a good decision.  Nobody is seeing him as a top 15 pick, so have another season like this season or a better season and he could be a top 15 pick.

I have not seen him be anything other than a late 2nd round pick. Which is too bad, I mean....hellooooo?!

He's my favorite Duck, and I've been expecting this good news for a while. Even if he has a similar season to last year's, he should be drafted for sure.

  9. Here is my hot take: older alumni that would be going to all of the home games don't because they won't let go of Mac Court.

Was the experience much, much better before? Absolutely. Was it sustainable for modern collegiate athletics? Of course not. I think UO alumni owe more to the program, and they should be showing up for the team.

It also would not hurt if we got a new court, maybe a plain parquet pattern would be "cool" enough.

  10. * Schedules are already made into the 2030's. I think it's quite unlikely Oregon and Washington wouldn't go to the B1G during the B1G's next contract negotiation- if not earlier.

    * Not many, if any, popular teams that are usually ranked 4-20 are going to want to schedule Oregon for a home & home.

    * Oregon and Washington should take the much lower payout to be in the B1G ASAP so that we get a good payout in 2028 (or whenever the next contract is). Get it over with.

I once played Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet. I know all about being in the middle of a sword fight between rivaling factions, getting gravely injured, and pretending everything is OK as long as possible.

That's where the Ducks find themselves now. They are wounded in a conference that is dying, but they say everything is fine. I don't want to ask for Oregon tomorrow, and find out they are a grave program.

I don't want Oregon to fight. I don't want Oregon to try and save their old friends. The University of Oregon should send their best lawyers and consultants to the Midwest and ask for mercy. End the madness. We can not save the PAC in this fight.

Like J.O.S.H.U.A. said at the end of the movie War Games, "the only winning move is not to play."  Oregon should not involve themselves in the politics or potential collapse of the Pac-12, and simply leave.
