ESPN's Bill Connelly's Initial SP+ Rankings Top 10 - Pac-12 Rankings - And a Few Others
Thanks very much for that assessment of the Ducks defense. Sounds promising, I can’t wait to see how it turns out!!! I honestly think that in year 2 under the watchful eye of Lanning, this Ducks D will be much improved. If so it could be huge, especially since it appears the Ducks will be facing some very good QBs leading very formidable offenses. Again, I agree that an improved pass rush could be huge. As you say, it could take much pressure off of the players with coverage assignments. No matter how good a player is in coverage, it’s nearly impossible to stay in phase for an extended period of time. This is one of the reasons that I feel that QBs that can scramble and extend plays are so dangerous.

Yes, I think it’s very possible for the SEC to send two teams. However, it’s also possible that they knock each other out of contention and only send the SEC champ. I do think GA has a very good chance to make the Playoff mainly because our schedule does seem rather lite for an SEC schedule. Losing the Oklahoma game really hurts our SOS though. But in all likelihood, if the SEC ends with two 1 loss teams it will take a very promising looking team from another conference to keep one of them out. I’m excited to watch the Playoff in 2024 with 12 teams. It will be interesting to see who fills the other spots. It’s very likely that the B1G sends a team. But I also think that while the Pac-12 could be super competitive and it’s possible that they too might knock each other out of contention, I believe it’s very possible that bc of this competitiveness a 1 loss Pac-12 Champion could make the Playoff. Of course this is all contingent on how the other conference championships play out. As far as GA 3-peating, while I would love to see it, I think it’s unlikely. Yes GA is super talented and coached extremely well, but we had some very fortunate breaks that helped us win some big games the last two years. Not saying at all GA didn’t earn two in a row, I do think we were the best team and might be again, but the likelihood of getting similar breaks if needed is probably low. Who knows though? As for the Ducks, I absolutely agree that an effective 4-man pass rush could pay huge dividends for the defense. This could also increase the efficiency and effectiveness of LBs and DBs. A dominant or even just strong defense could potentially make a world of difference. You got me curious and excited. In your opinion, who are some of the additions to the Ducks defense that could make the biggest impact?

Yes, after your pointing it out I agree, it is fair to assume that Bama could potentially struggle in the tough SEC West considering all of the major changes. I also agree about LSU, Daniels is a very good QB. And to be honest, I was very impressed with Garret Nussmeier their backup QB. He absolutely torched a very good GA defense in the SEC Championship game. I’m excited to see how my Dawgs will fair with our new QB. My money is on Beck winning the job but all three seem highly talented so it might get interesting. I’m also very excited about the Ducks. Like LSU they have a great QB returning. Bo Nix coming back is huge!!! Looks to me like the Pac-12 will be littered with very good QBs this coming season. I agree that the Pac-12 will likely be better top to bottom than the B1G.

Tennessee seems too high to me at #6. But maybe I’m just nitpicking bc I can’t stand orange😂. They do have some very good skill players on offense so if their O-line plays well and QB Joe Milton takes a big leap forward I could see their offense being once again very formidable. And who knows, if Milton falters it’s possible that incoming freshman QB Nico Lamaleava gets a shot and does well. It’s a stretch, but Nico will likely be very good before he is done in college and Josh Heupel is a good offensive coach. Their defense is another story. As for the Ducks at #8, I think that’s fair. As far as the top goes, I guess it’s fair to have GA there considering talent and the past two seasons. Honestly though, who knows. I couldn’t really argue if Bama or tOSU were ranked #1 in this poll.

Possible 2023 CFB Rule Changes: Help Limit Injuries, Shorten Games
Yes, I think something like that would make sense. Seems reasonable, especially if time is a factor before the half or late in the 4th quarter. I’m sure some teams would still do it if it was to their advantage but at least there would be some consequences for doing it. And like you say, it could be a plus for the player’s safety.

Possible 2023 CFB Rule Changes: Help Limit Injuries, Shorten Games
I’m not sure I would like some of the potential clock changes. To me not stopping the clock after an incompletion just seems wrong and would be a really big change. It would be nice if something could be done about fake injuries. They are annoying as many of you have stated. Sadly, I don’t really see a fix here. One of the most common faked injuries is catching a cramp late in games. Unfortunately it does actually happen very often for real. How can you quickly and accurately decide if a player truly has a cramp or is faking? I’m afraid fake injuries will continue to be part of the game. I’ve witnessed several times over the years where I was pretty sure GA has used this tactic in seemingly an effort to slow down an offense and rest their defense, or to be able to sub. And we aren’t alone. I’m sure all teams will do it.

Oregon Ducks Football: 4 Ways Lanning’s Ducks Can Finish Games Better in 2023
Hey my Duck friends been awhile. I’m trying to catch up with everything Duck related. Very nice article Alex well done!!! I absolutely agree with your analysis. Especially about keeping Nix healthy, the run game, and everything defense related. Having a player breakout on the D-line could pay huge dividends by as you mentioned demanding double teams and providing others with opportunities. Much like Carter for the Dawgs last season. His stats weren’t great but his presence was huge. Guys like this can be game changers. Lanning is a defensive coach, but Oregon’s strength might yet again be on offense. I’d love to see an offense that can control the game and keep opposing defenses on the field. It can’t be overstated how much of an advantage this could potentially bring. Keeping the Ducks D fresh and exhausting the opponents D could be huge late in games. I’m not sure that is a strategy the new OC has in mind but it seems like a strategy that Lanning might lean towards. Bo Nix and Co verses a tired defense in the 4th seems like a great recipe. Anyhow, I’m enjoying reading about the Ducks. Things are looking up I believe, Lanning is doing what he does. Go Ducks!!!!

Peach Bowl Game Thread: Ohio State vs. Georgia
Being that it’s over and that we somehow squeaked out an almost miraculous win, And that Stroud didn’t quite cause me to have a heart attack, I’m glad it went this way. In hopes that our D will be laser focused and more prepared for TCU. I’m proud of our guys, they never gave up and made it happen when they had to. In truth though, we were also lucky enough to have everything go our way late in the game. As much as I don’t like tOSU, I must admit that they played great and didn’t deserve to lose. I’m not saying we didn’t earn it, but we were very fortunate in the end with the way things played out. Our guys got it done, but there was a fair amount of luck involved.

Peach Bowl Game Thread: Ohio State vs. Georgia
No, we had no starters opt out. Our D just had a rough night. tOSU was prepared and came to play. Stroud played exceptionally well, and we didn’t consistently get pressure on him nor did we cover well downfield. They got away with some holding, but I’m sure we did also. It’s the most gassed I’ve seen our D all year. tOSU offense took it to us pretty good.

Absolutely, Duggan is incredible. And TCU is probably the most entertaining team to watch this season. I was ready to pull for them if we lost. I must admit though, I’m not a fan of tOSU, but Stroud and Co earned my respect in that game. They really played incredible.

Who Do YOU Want To Be the Next Ducks' OC?
I think Garrett Riley would be an excellent hire. Do you think it’s a realistic possibility? Could he be enticed to leave TCU for the same position at Oregon?

Joel Klatt: Oregon Made Scheduling Mistake with Georgia
“The idea the Georgia game was on a neutral field was a joke.” Absolutely, and I said the same on this forum before the game. It’s a very obvious point, all one need do is look at ticket sales or heck just look at the colors in the stands. I don’t think it was a bad game to schedule. How could anyone know that GA would be that good or that the Ducks would be playing their first game with a brand new coaching staff and scheme 4 years ago. And honestly, if Oregon were to beat or play a top SEC team close it is awesome for SOS.
