  1. You are spot on. Here's an article from October of 2017, so midway through Smart's second season as the new HC of the Dawgs. Honestly, I'd bet a very similar article could be written about the Ducks sometime in '23. Georgia players now say ‘culture change’ is real, and results have been spectacular WWW.DAWGNATION.COM Georgia players now say the culture change since Kirby Smart arrived is real, and the results have been spectacular, as this year's start shows. Quotes from 2017: At its core, practice habits seem to be the main emphasis. Making practices harder than the games, to put it in the most simple terms. “The harder you practice the easier the game is,” junior receiver Terry Godwin said. “I would say the culture change to us is just buying into what Coach Smart brought in. I feel like the majority of this team has done it. And it goes to show on game day. You see what it’s producing.” “Last year, it wasn’t what guys expected. It wasn’t what guys were used to,” Michel said after beating the Vols on Saturday. “A lot of decisions Coach Smart was making — as a player, if something is hard, your natural instinct is to be defiant and not want to do it. But once you buy in and it works, it’s fun.” “I think we’ve grown up a little bit as a team,” Smart said. “I think they’ve seen the evidence in the practice habits they have. We didn’t know it would get the results we wanted from our practice habits last year. They’ve bought in to the fact that if they’re physical on Tuesday and Wednesday, they’ll be physical on Saturday. That’s carrying over.
  2. To build on that, how many tries did it take for one of Saban's former assistants to beat him? In total, Saban racked up 25 wins and 0 losses to his former assistants until last year. The first one was Jimbo at A&M and then Kirby in the NC game. Kirby was 0 for 4 prior to that. Not pointing this out to say that Kirby is nearly as good as Saban, but just to say that the student beating the teacher with the same blueprint is not an easy task.
  3. Listen, I know yesterday was tough, but what you saw yesterday was a preview of what Dan Lanning wants the Ducks to be. I truly believe he's the guy that can get you there, however it's a marathon not a sprint. Yesterday was just a nightmare matchup for a first year coach. Kirby has built a self-sustaining, buzzsaw of a program. It's reload, not rebuild for the Dawgs. But that didn't happen in game one of Smart's tenure. It takes time. Time to change the mentality. Time to change the personnel. Time to teach the system. Kirby's mantra was, and still is, "Trust the Process", and if given the time I truly believe Coach Dan Lanning can take the lessons he learned from Kirby and implement them in Oregon to get you guys to the level of the program you saw yesterday.
  4. -- UGA -- 42 - 17 -- 0 turnovers -- 2 sacks -- 276 passing yards
  5. I just saw this practice report on Oregonlve.com "The offensive line drills during the first period featured T.J. Bass with Alex Forsyth and Ryan Walk as the first unit on the interior and Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu and Steven Jones as the top pair of tackles. Dawson Jaramillo was with the second tackle pair and Marcus Harper II was with the second interior group." Would that put Jones at LT in your opinion?
  6. Thanks for posting. You put six on there. Who do you think is the odd man out?
  7. To continue the process of learning about each others teams, I wanted to dive into the OLs. I know a little bit about #56 and #71, but not so much about the other guys. As with most contests, the OL that can at least stalemate if not dominate the opposing DL gives their offense quite the leg up in moving the ball and putting up points. For reference, here's what the Dawgs will be trotting out: LT - #59 RsSO - Broderick Jones (6'4" 310 lbs) - The former 5-star (#11 player overall nationally in the class of 2020) saw his first real action last year getting 438 snaps while filling in for injury. He became somewhat of a savior in the National title game when the starting RG was unable to handle Bama's DL, the staff made the decision to move the starting LT (Jamaree Salyer) to RG and plug in Broderick at LT. He not only held his own against Bama's poster boy, Will Anderson Jr., in some instances he dominated him (82.2 PFF overall; 88.3 PFF runblock). He's a first round talent kinda guy who everyone expects him to put it all together this year. LG - #73 RsJR - Xavier Truss (6'7" 320 lbs) - A top 250 recruit from the class of 2019. Got his feet wet a little bit at RG last year with 187 mostly garbage-time snaps. Originally was slated as an OT, but has moved inside instead. While he does have the length for a tackle, he doesn't have the feet, so he seems to be a better fit at guard. Won the spot in fall camp this year over multiple challengers. He'll be one to watch here as he's probably the biggest unknown on the Dawg OL. C - #63 RsSO - Sedrick Van Pran (6'4" 310 lbs) - The number 60 overall recruit in the class of 2020, Van Pran took won the starting job last year and hasn't looked back. Had some early bumps and bruises, but finished the year strong. Will be a strong contender for this year's Rimington Trophy. RG - #69 RsSO - Tate Ratledge (6'6" 315 lbs) - The number 38 overall recruit in the class of 2020, Tate won the starting RG spot previous to the 2021 season, but broke his foot 4 plays into game #1. Still raw experience wise, but the word is he has the potential to be one of the best on the OL. RT - #70 RsJR - Warren McClendon (6'4" 300 lbs) - A top 250 recruit from the class of 2019, McClendon became the starter at RT his RsFR year and has really developed into a rock on the right side. More of a technician than a mauler, it really tough to get him out of position. Made the All SEC first team from the coaches poll.
  8. Fair or not, I agree with this assessment. This weekend will drive the narrative for the PAC for at least the early part of the season, and once a narrative gains traction, it can be really tough to shake it. With that being said, I think the Utes have a better than average shot at leaving The Swamp with a W.
  9. Yeah, Kirby plays it really close to the vest on just about everything. For those in the medical field there's a Minimum Necessary Standard as a part of HIPAA, which basically dictates the information shared must be at the minimum necessary to complete the task at hand. That's also how Kirby runs his team's relationship with the media, and I expect CDL will follow suit with his mentor's practices in that regard.
  10. Yes, you are correct. Should have trusted myself and not went with the source material I was looking at. And, also yes, those guys are the 5 star starters with another two front seven guys and two more in the secondary waiting their turn
  11. Thanks. In the secondary, I'd probably start with trying Poole at Star. Test him to see if he just had a game where he played out of his mind in the National title game or if a light bulb finally came on and he's playing with some confidence that he hadn't had in the past. Also, put some pressure on Dan Jackson. You're not likely to confuse him, but maybe you can out-athlete him. For the LBs: Jack - #4 SR - Nolan Smith - Rated the composite #1 overall player in his recruiting class, he's the heart and soul of the defense. Had to wait his turn behind a couple of first rounders in the past but really came on last year when he took the reigns. Does it all really well, sets the edge in the run game, drops back in coverage, and rushes the passer. A true hybrid guy. Sam / Backup Jack - #33 RsSR - Robert Beal - Another highly rated guy that had to wait his turn behind some 1st rounders. The Sam spot only comes into play when playing a true base set, so it's a little more rare in today's game with the popularity of 11 and 10 personnel groupings, but you may see him a little more giving Smith a breather or when Oregon comes out in a heavy set. Money - #10 SO - Jamon Dumas-Johnson - (see blurb in OP) Mac - #2 SO - Smael Mondon Jr. - Didn't get as many snaps as a FR as Jamon did, so he's a little more green. Athleticism for days though. Will probably have to use that to make up for some missed reads before the game starts to slow down for him.
  12. Sure. Safety #29 SR - Chris Smith is the returning starter with the most experience. Took over as the starter in 2020 and played the majority of snaps last year when not battling an injury. Could play his way into the 1st round of the NFL draft with a big season this year. LINK to Scouting Profile #17 RsJR - Dan Jackson - Former walk on that just seems to keep on making plays. Played 455 snaps last year filling in when needed, and looks to be the starter in game one. He's trying to hold off #24 true FR Malaki Starks and several others to keep his spot. Star #31 RsSR - William Poole - Played sparingly over his career until late last year where he got 273 snaps. Had a game to forget in the SEC Championship game as he got abused by Bama, but turned it around to be one of the standouts in the National title game. Seems to be a glue guy as the staff is working him out as the 3rd corner too. OR #22 SO - Javon Bullard - Didn't play much as a FR, but has made noise in camp. On the smaller side, but fearless when it comes to making and finishing a tackle. Corner #5 JR - Kelee Ringo - Returning starter that is a sure fire 1st rounder, maybe even a top 5 kinda talent. #3 SO - Kamari Lassiter - 158 snaps in 9 games last year, so barley got his toes wet. Earned the spot in camp over Nyland Green and two 5 star true FR.
  13. Hello to the Fish Duck fam. I just wanted to thank folks for letting me hang out / lurk for most of the summer. I always like to find a good forum from opposing teams to learn more in depth about the opposing programs, and this one has been one of the best. I mean everyone knows about guys like Flowe and Sewell, but places like this are where you learn the true details of a team like how the season actually hinges on who wins the backup long snapper spot. So, in that spirit, I thought I'd give you all a little preview of the Dawgs and guys that are not the ones that the national pundits bring up all the time. These are guys to keep an eye out for that will be a factor for good or for bad. Offense: #6 - SR RB - Kenny McIntosh - He's got some big shoes to fill as the next guy up at RBU. He's an all-around kinda back who is good at everything but not exceptional at anything if that makes sense. His best attribute is probably his ability to make the tough catches out of the backfield, and you'll see him used in a similar fashion to how UGA used James Cook last year. #69 - RsSO RG - Tate Ratledge - This dude is quite the character. Rocks a sweet mullet and is just the right kind of "off" mentally that makes for a devastating O-Lineman. Had won the job last year with whispers of him looking like the best NFL prospect on the OL, but broke his foot four plays into the first game. He's just now getting the chance to show his stuff. #00 - JR TE - Darnell Washington - Everybody knows UGA's other TE Brock Bowers, and even Arik Gilbert gets a lot of press due to his journey from LSU. But the real mismatch guy is Darnell. Standing 6'7" tall and weighing in at 270 lbs this guy has a 1%'er body type even for the NFL. He was slowed down last year due to a foot injury in camp and then became overshadowed by Brock Bowers phenomenal freshman season. Word out of camp is that "Big 0" is healthy and hungry to prove he's not just another guy out there. Defense: #10 - SO ILB - Jamon Dumas-Johnson - He's another one with big shoes to fill as he's the guy replacing Nakobe Dean as the quarterback of the defense. He's a very instinctual player who is a natural in making the reads and being in the right place at the right time as evidenced by his first career game where he came up with a silky-smooth pick six against UAB. From all accounts this guy, whenever he comes out, looks like the next 1st round ILB from UGA's coach Glenn Schumann, who already has 2 first rounders and 3 third rounders to his credit since 2018. #93 - RsFR DE - Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins - "TID" for short, is the guy replacing 1st overall pick Travon Walker. At 6-5 300 lbs he's a dude. Has a quick first step and is really tough to move off the point. He's one to watch as if the Duck are going to have any success running the ball, it will have to be on his side. #96 - RsJR DT - Zion Logue - Another guy with enormous shoes to fill as he's replacing Jordan Davis. He's not nearly Davis' size (I mean who is?), so he'll have to rely more on technique. If there is success to be found against UGA's DL from an OL perspective it will be here. Again, thanks for letting me hang around, and feel free to ask any questions about the UGA lineup. I'll be more than happy to answer.
  14. Just wanted to provide a little more context on the first game for the Dawgs last year against Clemson. The UGA offense was wholly ineffective that day. No question. There were a number of factors that played into that which won't be considerations in game one this year. For example: 1) The starting QB for the Dawgs, JT Daniels, had a rib injury he was working through. He was very limited in that game as evidenced by his passing chart below. Only 8 passes were even attempted from 10-20 yds downfield and none beyond 20 yards. His yards per pass attempt for the game was 4.5 ypa. For contrast this year, Stetson Bennett's yards per attempt last year was 9.9 which was good for 2nd nationally for Power 5 QBs with more than ~150 attempts. JT Daniels in game #1 vs Clemson from PFF 2) UGA was really banged up at WR and TE. Everyone knows that George Pickens was out, but Jermaine Burton, Kearis Jackson, Darnell Washington, and Dom Blalock were all either out or highly limited. A true FR was the most targeted receiver in the game. 3) The UGA OL was starting a new center and lost the starting RG on the 4th offensive snap. This was against a DL with four 5 stars in the lineup with Brian Bresee, Myles Murphy, KJ Henry, and Xavier Thomas. Not to mention Trenton Simpson at LB as a former 5 star too. This was a factor in the conservative game plan as well. So, to sum up, Clemson was a highly mediocre team last year in general, but in game one they were very healthy on the defensive side of the ball and really posed a problem to a banged up UGA offense. Had the game been played later in the year, it most likely would have looked much different.
