Michael Penix Jr. opts out of Senior Bowl game, per report

Michael Penix Jr., Washington’s star quarterback and the 2023 Heisman runner-up, will not participate in Saturday’s Senior Bowl game.

After a week of practice in Mobile, Alabama, the former UW passer has decided not to play in the game, according to a report from Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. Penix is one of a number of players on the National team who have decided to skip the game, leaving the roster “gutted,” according to Florio.

The Senior Bowl’s executive director shared on Saturday morning that a defensive lineman is switching from the American team to the National team for the game because of “roster attrition.” Nagy added it’s the first time in the 75-year history of the all-star showcase that a player has switched teams on game day.

According to Florio, Oregon’s Bo Nix will also only play a couple of series. That will leave Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman to handle the bulk of the snaps for the team.

SEC, Big Ten 'advisory group' stands as coded threat to NCAA: Figure it out, or we'll go off ourselves

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti are setting up a joint advisory group of university presidents, chancellors, and athletic directors to explore “common-sense solution(s)” to developing issues within college football.

In a release, the two leagues said the advisory group will have no authority to act independently and will only serve as a consulting body. The group’s composition, charter and timetable, and specific issues it will focus on have yet to be determined. But the goal is clear.

In the absence of a college football commissioner, the two most powerful leagues in college athletics are stepping in to try and solve the issues the NCAA has been incapable of answering.

Dan Lanning taking vibes at Oregon to another level, expert says

Duck Territory's Matt Prehm breaks down the state of the Oregon program heading into the 2024 season.

Oregon coach Dan Lanning did plenty to win over the Duck fanbase this past season, guiding the Ducks to 12 wins and a top 10 ranking. And that was before Nick Saban retired at Alabama, with Lanning quickly rebuffing reports that he would be one of the top candidates.

"Oregon was already pretty high on Dan Lanning following the Fiesta Bowl victory and his ability to retain most of his NFL-eligible underclassmen. Combine that with the school's best recruiting class in school history and Duck fans were puffing their chests," said Matt Prehm with Duck Territory. "So when Lanning shut down the rumors of Alabama and him as quickly as he did, the vibes in Eugene went to another level."

Lanning has talked about his belief in what Oregon could be.  And the Ducks will have a chance to prove it in a new conference this year, with Oregon moving over to the Big Ten.

Prehm broke down the state of the Oregon program and which players to watch for the 2024 season.

Live updates during the Oregon at USC basketball game as the Ducks look to remain in first place.

Follow the action between the first-place Oregon Ducks (14-6, 6-3) and the USC Trojans (8-12, 2-7) from Los Angeles as both programs look to bounce back from a tough weekend and return to the winning track.

For the Ducks, they enter Thursday night's game squarely on the bubble of the NCAA Tournament. The Ducks need to start winning games and getting themselves back on the right side of the bubble. For USC, the Trojans have seen a once-promising season crumble before their eyes and have now lost five straight games coming into Thursday night.

We should be seeing two programs that are going to be playing desperate and with everything on the table as they look to get back on the winning side. Follow the action as we provide pregame, in-game, and postgame updates between the Ducks and the Trojans.

Oregon is 17-7 against USC under head coach Dana Altman. The Ducks have split the last ten games played against the Trojans 5-5. The Ducks have won two of the last five played in Los Angeles, including a 79-69 win in January 2022, the last time the game was played at USC.

Thursday night's contest is set for 7 PM and will be broadcast by ESPN. Dave Pasch and Bill Walton are on the call.

Dan Lanning Visits No. 1 Recruit in Washington on Heels of De-Commitment

Timing can play a big role in recruiting, and Oregon is looking to capitalize on recent coaching moves that have come as a result of Nick Saban's retirement.

Head coach Dan Lanning has been traveling all over the country this month, but he made it a priority to make a stop in the Pacific Northwest to see 2025 Spanaway (Wash.) Bethel linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale, who hosted the head coach on Wednedsay

With him back on the market, the Ducks should be viewed as serious contenders in his recruitment. Aside from the in-state Huskies, Oregon has distance on their side and they've made a habit of stealing the top talent from Washington.

Oregon has become a top destination for elite defensive talent on the West Coast under Lanning, and that's a trend that will almost surely continue.

"If you want to play defense out West, you come to Oregon. It's pretty simple," Williams said after making his commitment July.

The Ducks have yet to land their first defensive player in the 2025 class, but you can bet that Rainey-Sale is going to be a big name on their board moving forward and they'll work to get him on campus for a visit in Eugene.
